i need some help wit a stripped nut guys.. its the one on top of the coilovers.. and its in the worse possble place to happen. It is the nut that holds the rear suspension, and its the one that is close to the middle, so it is really tight in there.. I did some searching around, and seem like nobody has had this specific nut stripped..
now you might say that a stripped nut is a stripped nut no matter where it is, but, if you have seen how cramped it is in the rear s14 shock towers, you would know my situation.. its tough to get anything in there.
also i have seen the bolt on stipped nut remover from sears, but any other ideas before i head to sears as a last resort?
any ideas would help.. thanks guys, and if there is a thread about this same location, i apologize... thanks again
here is a pix update:

rethread it go to any hard ware store and you can get a thread tapper to match the thread or go buy new ones. i seem to remember that new nuts on top of the coilovers from cusco is like around 20-30 bucks for both of them

by rethread you mean the bolt? or the nut? the bolt is fine, its just the nut.. i wanted to remove it to install a rear strut bar, but then it stripped on me.. so my damn socket(which is the only thing that will fit in there) would just keep slipping.. so, i stopped doin it.. didnt want to make the situation worse than it is right now...

hes talking about the nuts, not the bolts.
put some paper in the socket and fit it around the rounded off nut.
or electric tape.
or anything else that can take up extra space.

I've always wanted to try the "gator grip" socket but never needed it. You could try. Its a "universal socket" and is also suppose to work for stripped bolts and nuts too.

do you mean the center nut that compresses the spring or one of the side nuts
this is stock s13 but same idea.

I've used this before and yeah... doesn't work that well better off stuffing the socket.
use blue tape and try with a 12 point socket. if that doesnt work use the nut out thing and just put another nut on it. its a number 12 or 14. farily alot of those ne ways.
you make it sound like you fuked up'd your threads but your talking about rounding out the nut rite?

i drill a small hole in side of nut and place center punch in hole and pound the nut in the counterclockwise direction.
have not tried this

Use correct tools to begin with and you wouldnt have to deal with it.

yeah.. the nut is rounded.. the thread is fine.

i did use the correct tools... i used a socket.. but, the nut just stripped..
i will try the electrical tape or blue tape trick and see if that works. maybe sometime this afternoon..
thanks guys

that doesn't look too tough to get to....just clamp that thing with a big pair of vice grips.

if your talking about the picture, it was just for reference on which nut got stripped.. that pic was for an s13.. i have an s14..

so there's no room whatsoever for you go get a vicegrip on it? Even a small one would get the job done. Get it on tight so the teeth sink in, and go to town on it

1/2" socket? or did you just put it on an angle and crank it? lol
in any case, find an old socket thats slightly smaller than the nut, and hammer it on. this will ruin the socket so like i said find an old one or just bite the $5 bullet
don_bagz
10-22-2008, 02:54 PM
might be young but not dumb.. and i know not to crank at an angle or fit a socket thats not the exact size.. if the paper around the socket wont work, then i would have to hammer a smaller size.. its okay, i have a couple lying around.. haha!

well, guess the tape in the socket doesnt work.. so, im gonna try and ask autozone tmrw and see what they suggest..

Post a pic of the location and how bad the nut is. That may help in what we suggest.

its a tiny nut. just drill it off with a drill with a flexible extention. or use some kind of chisel and hammer the nut off.
incidently, does freeze off work as well as propane torch?
don_bagz
10-23-2008, 09:47 AM
pix are up... would a freeze off kill my bolt too? i just need to get rid of the nut, if its possible, while saving the bolt..

You think thats a bad spot try the s13 motor mount nut on the driver side near the power steering lines there was no room to get anythign over there and the bolt was stripped when i got the car. Anyways i picked up the stripped nut/bolt remover and it worked perfectly the first time. and now if it ever happens again i have the tools i need to get the bolt off so i cant really complain.

why doesn't anyone just thread another bolt over top of that one....tack it on and then unbolt the new nut off. Brings the old one off with it. case closed

Ugh, I feel you here. I stripped a few of the bolts for the seat mounts. I'm not sure if I need to rethread it or not. Not very happy atm.

Good you got it off but, there's way in you used a proper sized socket in the beginning and stripped that bolt like that.

just get a 12pt socket and slam it on with a hammer and take it out. used to do that with stripped lugnuts.

there was no room to put vice grips on it... it just didnt have room.. if the rear wind shield wasnt there, i would have alot of room to work wit..

i did use the right size socket, but, used the 12 point socket instead of the 6 point socket.. so, i guess ANSKY was somewhat right about me being a noob.. haha

im sure it works on most cases.. but, try fitting a vice grip in the rear strut tower nuts of an s14 and see if you can fit it in there and be able to turn it.

10-26-2008, 10:33 AM
Why don't you just hammer another socket on there or cut the nut with a dremel?
That's what I would've done if for some forsaken reason I didn't want to go to the hardware store.

i had this happen to me, i just hammered a socket by force and it shaped it out.
