All the time? Only when taking apart the head/suspension?

well basically every part on a vehicle has a torque spec so to be mr. perfect you should use a torque wrench all the time... but imo, i really only use one for engine/powertrain work/wheels/suspension...

Suspension/motor/drivetrain/anything else I think needs it...my wrench only goes from 40 to 200 so little stuff like 12ft/lbs i don't usually worry about.

only engine internals

everything else i just do what feels right.

You should purchase a FSM. That will help you out.

I have one,I noticed people have different opinions on when its needed.

Only on the wheels, diff, trans and inside the engine. Everything else I just try to tighten within reason.

I take long enough working on my car as it is.

to that first post,

you use a torque wrench when you put things on not take them off,

bottom end, head, things that seem important

Nothing on my car is torqued, not even the clutch or flywheel, I only use the torque wrench as a breaker bar, haha.

Don't follow my example though!

Thats bad on the wrench. Buy a breaker bar

yeah a 10 dollar piece of steel can do the same job as your 50 dollar wrench.

I tq axle nuts, pulley nuts, engine internals, headgaskets wont seal right if not tq'ed down properly. I tq down my lugnuts so I don't have a wheel stud failure or a lugnut fly off of my car or strip a wheel stud.

Anything that requires a "seal" get's tq'ed otherwise the just right method applies to it.

lol and after you get a breaker bar... get the torque wrench re-calibrated...becuase something tells me it may be out of spec haha:werd:

I will admit to using Russian and German Torque on certain occaisions.

Russian Torque = Tightinov

German Torque = Guten Tight

not only is it bad on the wrench, usually they are only calibrated in a certain direction not to mention taking it in the wrong direction or even dropping it can cause improper torques.

Yeah but he said he only uses it for a breaker bar, so basically it doesn't matter if it's out of calibration, does it.

On wheel lugs, suspension stuff, whatever else that has an RTV that I can reach

If it connects moving/viatal parts, I torque it.

nothing

i don't know how to work on cars so i don't care

Vital engine parts, suspension parts, lugs, any engine part that needs proper torque to create a good seal...

Never. When I start building motors, I'll start using a torque wrench.

i use it to beat down my motor when it produces too much torque. got to beat it up! too much torque, bad motor

well human power on a regular wrench is a lot more than you would think so its not like you need it all the time.if what your tightening has a catastrophic rate of causing major damage to your car torque it down.

Well I work at a shop and we have digital snap on t-wrenches but honestly I have only used or seen them used when we torque on heads, main bearing caps, and con rods bolts. Our manager basically told us if we cannot accurately gauge torque within spec by feel we dont belong in his shop. And from time to time he spot checks us and it has always been within spec.

Bolt on spacers, that's it.

only on engine internals.....even then sometimes i dont use it. but that may be cuz i dont actually have one. but everything else is just wrenched by hand or with good ole ingersol rand air gun.

General Rule of thumb: All Internal Engine components, any component that requires even mating to another surface, and any large critical bolts/nuts.

JRas

lugs

hubs

stuff like that, most of the time I'm not able to fit the torque wrench in certain spots for those applications I just tighten within reason usually hand tighten with a wrench than use a breaker bar to give it a little bit more

huh?

Torque wrenches aren't for applying lots of torque, it's for applying the correct amount.

I torque down everything, battery terminals, fender bolts, I even go as far as torquing my shift knob onto my shifter.

My car doesnt run.

when it's something like the head and torque needs to be applied equally and at a certain spec.

i've never used a torque wrench on lugs or suspension stuff. i also do it based on the grade of the hardware. i'll tighten hte eff out of somethign only if i know the bolt can handle it.

i am now very careful after sn apping many a bolt when tightening/torquing sensitive things.

all the time, I use my craftsman digital for bigger stuff(motor, trans, suspension) and my old school needle read wrench for smaller things. Wouldn't feel right doing it any other way.
