did you get lucky and happen to buy a motorset with some nismo goodies???

Looking forward to see how this thing turns out. What kind of timetable are you working with? Any specific deadlines? Or just however long it takes to do it right?

96turbo: We happened to get a Rb26dett that had been rebuilt. And by looking at it I would say about 300 miles ago. It came with some nismo stuff, and it had a date hand written on the inside of the oil pan 08-20-06 or something around that date.

We are on a schedule with this car. The guidelines of the schedule are to have it done as soon as possible. At 100% quality, sacrificing nothing for any reason.

We hope to debut this car at a one of Jr's car shows.

Another update for today.

Since we will be running 350z seats for street practicality we needed to remove the old seat brackets. Jason drilled out all the spot welds, and out they came.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-14-08001.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-14-08003.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-14-08021.jpg

Next we started working on the oil pan. I chose to use the Stock Rb26dett oil pan instead of the rb25 one. Yes its alot of work to modify it, but then again its the right thing to for our goal.

Benefits of the 26 pan.

Its Aluminum so that helps with cooling.
It has kick outs.
It has better double level baffling and windage trays.
And most importantly it is a structural piece of the engine block.

Most people use a rb25 pan, but you have to drill out the bolt holes, remove the windage tray, and its stamped steel.

Since the 26 pan has a diff attached that is the first thing we will remove using the hypertherm powermax 800 plasma cutter

Some pieces are over an inch thick !

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-14-08005.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-14-08013.jpg

Then we chopped off the other sides axle flange on the Jet bandsaw.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-14-08016.jpg

Here is what we removed.

I'll take it off your hands for you.

blu808
10-18-2008, 10:06 PM
Ok. Well now that I had plasma cut the front diff casing from the pan. I took the pan to our machine shop and had Mike machine down all the un needed material.

Turned out looking great as usual.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08004.jpg

While he was doing that machine work I also had him machine some billet aluminum plugs that were 3 thousands bigger in diameter than the holes.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08005.jpg

I then bolted the oil pan to the block to eliminate any chance of warping. Then Heated it up with the torch. The heating of the aluminum will make it expand. That expansion will allow me to insert the aluminum plugs in place to aid in the sealing process.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08006.jpg

Fit like a glove.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08007.jpg

Then I preheated the whole side of the pan, and tig welded the plugs into place.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08010.jpg

And now we have a completely usable Rb26dett oil pan. WIN!

After that nightmare was over we chained up the engine, and pulled it off of the stand.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08012.jpg

Then Jason and I bolted up the transmission and lowered it into the car.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08013.jpg

As we thought the oil pan does not clear the crossmember.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08016.jpg

So out with that, and time to sit the engine where it will provide optimal weight balance, and clearance.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08027.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08029.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08030.jpg

Since we wont be using the stock transmission crossmember brackets, we cut those completely off the chassis.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08025.jpg

We will be tig welding new panels in place for a seamless apearance. Again another example on going the extra mile to create a factory appearing swap.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08024.jpg

After aligning everything you can see we are still within the optimal placement for the shifter.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-18-08031.jpg

More updates coming soon, along with a complete cromoly, tig welded, custom subframe.

I hope you have enjoyed todays updates.

Look what showed up today.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-20-08004.jpg

Billet aluminum CNC rear control arms.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-20-08003.jpg

These things are beefy.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-20-08002.jpg

The finish was top notch as well.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-20-08001.jpg

We were also able to finalize the position of the engine, and mock it up with the turbos and intake manifold.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-20-08005.jpg

Sits 1/2'' away from the firewall.
We will need to make some custom turbo elbows, and modify the firewall a tad to clear the dump pipes.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-20-08010.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-20-08017.jpg

Hmm. What do we have hear? The stock crossmember clearing? Maybe... Well slightly modified.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-20-08016.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/10-20-08015.jpg

Now that we were able to notch the factory crossmember we will b chopping out the middle, and building a jig. That way we can build the new tubular one based off the factory mount locations.

Ok so... Time for another update.

Started working on the fuel cell setup. It will be hidden by a firewall and then carpeted over.

First thing was to remove the old sheet metal with the Hypertherm 800 plasma cutter.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08017.jpg

Then grind everything smooth.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08018.jpg

Here is our cell. Its just a regular Black powder coated 15 gallon aluminum cell with a level sender.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08019.jpg

Then I started work on something that is really going to "make" this car legendary. The custom sub frame that will also act as a complete chassis stiffener.

First thing I did was make the mounts for the main pickup points for the new subframe.

These are 1.5" od .095" wall DOM tubing

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08052.jpg

Then I grabbed some grade 8 washers, and sanded all the zinc coating off. Then tacked them in place.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08053.jpg

I then tig welded them all up.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08055.jpg

And bolted them in the oem location.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08056.jpg

Then I measured where the stock Suspension arm pickup point was. It was located 3.75" down, and 3.25" inward of the chassis.

I then notched some tubing at the correct 50 degree angle, and tacked everything in place.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08058.jpg

After that was all confirmed I tig welded everything together.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08059.jpg

This took awhile.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08061.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08062.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08063.jpg

I then attached all the super baller suspension components, and confirmed fitment.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08064.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-5-08066.jpg

Looks like that little piece of the frame rail needs a big "L" piece welded in to make sure you don't bend that 'lip' with all the torsion that the LCA's going to generate.

As always, baller work Luke! Welds look insane.

thanks guys. We could of easily made these from box tubing. the parallel down tubes will be the main connection to the front part holding the steering rack, and front strut brace. the rear will tie into the tension arm mount, fire wall, and lower chassis. it will make perfect sense once you guys see it.

I will await to see more, but how will the frame not tug with those two little points mounted to the frame rails. I'm no metal expert but just curious.

I don't know much about suspension geometry either but how much stress is the suspension being mounted to this thin piece of metal going to hold up?

Today we started work on the driver side LCA mount.

Ok here is a little update for today.

We decided to test fit the ZG fender flares.
Surprisingly the flares fit right up with little issues or gaps.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-08-08001.jpg

We also mounted the rear wing. It also fit very well with no issues.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-08-08002.jpg

We also put the 350z seats in to check clearance, and measure for brackets.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-08-08003.jpg

Ohh, what do we have here? A steering rack clearing the rb26 oil pan while still retaining the original steering linkage and geometry. We have more on how it will all be mounted up later.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/11-08-08007.jpg

Hope you have enjoyed todays work.

1 question, why didn't you use the 200ZR RB20 oil pan rear sump setup? Thats what I did on my RB-Z

The RB26 pan is actually a stressed member of the engine, and has the sweet baffles. If you have the fab skills, plugging up the holes and using the RB26 pan is hands-down, the best way to go.

Luke, I was going to post how sexy you look in front of that car before, but decided not to. I can't help myself. That color is great, the chassis-roller is cute, and you look downright adorable. No homo.

Bill, we now need you to update your 240RS thread with a picture of you, dressed as similarly as possible, in a similar pose, in front of a cool customer's car. Do it.

GSXRJJordan
10-06-2010, 12:26 AM
I did a full chassis harness and Mil-spec engine harness, as well as an audio system/alarm/power windows/power door locks for this car a couple months ago. It's wearing some sweet CCW Classic's with Hankook R-S3's all around and with a custom aluminum pan, they're able to use a 260Z engine cradle that Luke's modding to keep the steering rack positioned where it's supposed to be.

Should be rolling around under it's own power after Formula D Irwindale (Luke's prepared Conrad's Camaro for the big show and his own S14 for Pro-Am Nationals), and finished shortly thereafter.
