HELP: sr20 valve spring removal question

i was wondering what valve spring removal tools you guys use to get off valve springs on the sr20 head...i have the head removed and the 2 tools ive tried wont fit bc of clearance issues...i talked to one shop and they said use a socket and hammer but id like to use a real tool if possible for removal and installation....any help is good

yeah, you can't reinstall with a socket. i use a generic cheap one. it has 2 horse shoes that bolt to each side of the head, then i slide a rod through the horse shoes, and use the rod as leverage for my little handled valve tool. i pull down on the handle and it compresses the spring. take the retainers out with a magnet, remove old spring, replace with new spring, compress spring /w retainers in place. as i push i slide retainers passed valve, come back up with retainers in the valve's grooves, and go to the next one.

it's a whole kit, i'll look on the box when i get to the shop tomorrow. i just used it yesterday for an sr20VE head.

I used the valve spring compressor from Sears. It only works with the head off and takes a bit of work as you have to have the head angled or partially off the bench. But w/e.. it worked for me and it's only $20. Although that extra $30 for the other valve spring compressor saves so effort in working with it. Just a suggestion on cheapness because we're all cheap here

hey guys i used the craftsmen tool to remove them no problem...however the part that is suppose to be against the retainer could not reach so we had to use a deep well socket to get the thing to work....but when reassembling i wont be able to get in there to replace the retainers.....any tools anyone uses to get them back together? thanks

What you could do is cut up a socket with a dremel or something so you can reach in there.

That or do what I did and use one of those PVC connectors from Lowes or Home Depot and with nimble fingers try to get it in there correctly. That's teh pain in the ass part of the Craftsman thing if you use the PVC method.

I think cutting up a socket is easier. I'm pretty sure it won't break and bust your finger but I didn't want to cut my sockets apart :hs:
