do our cars have a clutch fan or something. Cause when I start the car and put it in neutral and the clutch is out I hear something. When clutch depressed.... noise gone??? anyway of upgrading it to a quieter one

Sounds more like your pilot bushing.

Yes and No

We do have a clutch fan in our 240's which is driven directly off the crank and engages/disengages by use of a clutch (the bigass fan behind the radiator).

However there is no fan that is cooling/ attachted to the clutch. As was said above it's probably a bearing problem

What years your car?
I think the 89' and 90' has a clutch fan.

They all have clutch fans...and none of them have anything to do with the transmission clutch. They're clutch actuated cooling system fans that run off the water pump pulley.

it's probably the throw out bearing in your clutch. 240's pilot bushing is brass, with out and ball bearings in it, i believe.

Yep, I'd say the throwout bearing is more likely also.

Try this experiment:

Get the car rolling slowly in 2nd gear. push the clutch in. I bet you'll hear the same grinding noise faintly... now jam the stick into first. you'll hear the grinding change pitch as the tranny input shaft (and hence the throwout bearing) spins up to meet the new gear.

It's a pretty harmless noise AFAIK, just change both the TO bearing and the pilot bushing whenever you change the clutch.
