View Full Version : Affected by the economic turmoil?

Hey just wanted to start a thread to see what people were experiencing all across the nation with all this turmoil we are having. Massive layoffs, sales dwindling...what are you guys seeing/experiencing? Are things as bad as the media hype has it cracked up to be?

Vent/Share/Say what you want!

I live in NYC and things around here (with the exception of Wall St) are ok, but I think within the next 6mos that is going to change drastically.

I work at a subie dealership, and while things have leveled out a bit, they arent as good as they were when I started 2 years ago....shit's crazy how sporadic business is...

less hours at my job, which is retail sales/managment of an autoparts store, just enough to pay the bills, not the hobby :[

i been out of a job since march.. cant find a decent office job... everything is all labor blue collar around my area :(
suppose its the economy or my location. Alot of business turn to their staffing elsewhere etc..
or soo many dam jobs require bilingual spanish speaking, which really sucks imo

I honestly havent noticed much. People are still working on their cars, I still have a job, and Im about to get more hours. But then again, I live in BFE, Missouri on an Army post... Job security and money isnt lacking around here.

THIS should be in Off Topic too. and I think there is already a similar thread.

i guess i should... all my prior jobs have been sitting in a office pretty much.. i just grew accustomed to hate working with my hands.. these office jobs dont pay enough unless you get some high up position.. =\

Well I am expecting Cali, Fl and NV members to be most affected at this point. You guys were first to plunge in the housing markets.

My friend got laid off with me in July and we both found jobs...but he just got re-laid off today at his new firm.

i'd like to say that i am affected , got laid off my job last thanksgiving day, then waited like till august this year to get rehired , then it was sooo slow..... so i work with my dad we have a construction business , slow steady but we make decent money.....things are kinda slow and poor for everyone i ask around here though. and since i was in s.c. things are the same there ...

I teach at a local art college in the So Cali area and I have seen a hand full of students I know really hit hard - family losing their homes and jobs. Some of the students even had to drop out cause they couldn't afford it.

Southern California residents are seeing and getting affected by this economic turmoil.

I'm a socal resident, and I've beeen pretty affected by it.. you just gotta learn to adjust though. it's somewhat of a slap back into reality for some people. just gotta be money wise and refrain from buying stupid shit, like unnecessary car parts :(

i'm a first year associate at a small ip boutique

i've heard alot of indirect effects on hiring practices on some major law firms. they are trimming down the size of their incoming 1st years and extending less offers to 2L summer associates. this has hit a few acquaintances who now have no offers going into 3L year.

directly one of the clients of the firm i worked at has hinted that the particular department we do patent applications for may be getting cut or reduced. luckily they like our work and say we would get bumped to doing normal prosecution for them. we'll see if that goes through. other clients are still pumping out work for us... but it's still a little worrisome. they say ip is fairly immune to economic ups and downs. i hope it's true.

I work for an Auto Finance company out in LA. Though our company is still in good shape, they are cutting back on a few things here and there. They recently cut our overtime, cut back on simple costs (ie; Fed-Ex, office supplies, etc...), BUT we are still hiring people. The business is slowing down quite a bit but it looks like it might be picking up. Tax season is right around the corner so I'd like to see how good that is this year...

The only thing affecting me is that I can't get a federal consolidation loan for my school loans and I'm i'm stuck paying more than I planned. I also can't get a debt consolidation loan. I was so lucky I got my car loan before all of this mess. I understand cars depreciate, so I'm okay with mine falling to epic levels.

Other than that I'm new the the company and getting paid fairly low according to the medium over there. So my tenure will be fairly solid, especially since I'm recruiting college students.

Im sorry to hear of those being affected. I was going to quit my job earlier this year but something told me not to. Good thing I listened for once. As far as the economy affecting me, its really hasn't. I work for a German company making chainsaws. We do a lot of exporting so the company isn't seeing a hit in sales. We actually just got a big boom and I'm working 6 days a week, 10-12 hours a day. The company actually helped a lot of people out by making everyone a full benefits employee and putting them at max pay for their position.

Again, I'm sorry to hear of those being affected by the economy. Listen to the man who said the glass is half full.

Me wife is a real estate agent. That should be all I should have to say.

Actually though, despite real estate being in the shitter she hasn't had a terrible year.

She did have to go out and get a new career though so we have stable income again.

From Nov of last year until recently things were looking real bad for us. But now they seem to be turning around. We're preparing for things to get a lot worse before they get better.

I've been in the Air Force for almost 5 years. We get a raise every year and get allowances for all our necessities. Still felt it though, mostly because of gas and food prices. IMO the market will right itself. It always does.

my mom and i both work for the mortgage industry but seperate companies/positions.

she was laid off in june and hasn't found a job yet. I haven't been laid off but my hours have been cut in half. I recently moved out too, and the hour cut happened a week after my move. Scrambled looking for a 2nd office job to make the difference but no one is hiring according to my schedule since i work mwf and most office jobs require i be there at least all week for part time hours. I have recently found a job in retail to make the difference for now.

but what sucks is that my plan was to work full time and go to school full time, but now i have to put that on hold just to make it financially right now and work 2 jobs.

i hope that by spring, things will be semi better and i can plan it out where i can work and school again. Even work 2 jobs and school if i have to.

^^^yeah it's the depressing truth.

what's really sad is that we used to handle lots of refinances, but where business is at right now is handling REOs (Real Estate Owned property) Gotta do what you gotta do in order to survive the mortgage crisis right now especially when lots of people in this industry have not made it, or are hanging on by a thread.

Sad...but seems like family was from another culture. This could of been an honor killing of some sort. India has some really fucked up beliefs when it comes to things involving family/honor/money...they still believe in a caste system.
