<br>Sour grapes or legitimate complaint? That's the question we're left pondering after reading that Porsche believes Nissan must have cheated to record its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/01/gt-r-drops-ring-time-down-to-7-29/">7:29:03</a> lap time of the famed Nürburgring race circuit. Porsche claims that it had been <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/22/round-1-gt-r-vs-911-turbo-at-the-ring-advantage-gt-r/">suspicious</a> of the Nissan's lap times, so it acquired a U.S.-spec GT-R for testing back-to-back with its own 911 Turbo and GT2. The result? The mighty Godzilla was toppled by the Teutonic German duo, with the GT-R posting times a good 25-seconds slower than Nissan's claim. <br><br>How can Porsche explain the discrepancy? "This wonder car with 7:29 could not have been a regular series production car. For us, it's not clear how this time is possible. What we can imagine with this Nissan is they used other tires," says August Achleitner, the man in charge of the 911 program. There is <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/01/video-nissan-gt-r-7-29-ring-run/">footage of the GT-R</a> lapping the 'Ring at high speed, but it's taken from inside the car where the tires cannot be seen.<br><br>Considering the fact that Nissan saw fit to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/01/gt-r-drops-ring-time-down-to-7-29/">issue a press release</a> commemorating the car's fast-lap, we doubt this is something that will be taken lightly. There's a big can 'o worms here, and Porsche's in the corner holding the opener.<br><br><div><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-nissan-gtr/">In the Autoblog Garage: 2009 Nissan GT-R</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-nissan-gtr/940153/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/nissanskylinegtr_abg_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title=""></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-nissan-gtr/940154/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/nissanskylinegtr_abg_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title=""></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-nissan-gtr/940155/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/nissanskylinegtr_abg_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title=""></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-nissan-gtr/940156/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/nissanskylinegtr_abg_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title=""></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-nissan-gtr/940157/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/nissanskylinegtr_abg_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title=""></a></div><br>[Source: <a href="http://carsguide.news.com.au/site/motoring-news/story/porsche_accuses_nissan_of_cheating_at_nurburgring/">Carsguide</a>]<h6 style="clear:both;padding:8px 0 0 0;height:2px;font-size:1px;border:0;margin:0;padding:0"></h6><a href="http://carsguide.news.com.au/site/motoring-news/story/porsche_accuses_nissan_of_cheating_at_nurburgring/">Read</a>Â*|Â*<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/30/porsche-accuses-nissan-gt-r-of-cheating-the-ring/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a>Â*|Â*<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1328382/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a>Â*|Â*<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/30/porsche-accuses-nissan-gt-r-of-cheating-the-ring/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a>

i wouldnt be surprised if they did use different tires. run-flats arn't really performance oriented to begin with. they should be OPTIONAL, not standard.

even still it is an amazing car, and check out top gears lap times for it, simply astonishing.

I think Porsche is looking for any excuse possible to prove Nissan wrong. Of course run flats are not going to perform as well. For Porsche to just grab a showroom U.S, car to test against their GT2 one has to ask is there GT2 a U.S. spec showroom GT2 as well?

the Germans are just sore losers. they have been bitter since the days that the Z's came out and were beating 911's in the 70's.

I think the problem is that for safety regulations the car must be equipped with either a spare tire or runflats...

it seems a lot of automakers are opting for run flats over a donut, I suppose it's easier to just install different tires then it is to design and build in locations to store a donut and jack.

...not to mention the concept of a run flat sells better than trying to convince someone that they don't have them because of the performance benefits.

Porsche better be right in their accusations, otherwise I'm definitely not buying that 911 I wasn't considering.

If Porsche does turn out to be wrong, then it means that the GTR is impossibly fast and more kudos to the Nissan engineers.

i think ill take the porshe around the track for a 15 minute lap time. then describe the results as objective.

usdm180sx
10-02-2008, 01:20 PM
Looks like Nissan engineers are coming up too fast for Porsche to strike back engineering wise. Thus, the accusation was made. A marque of Porsche's stature should have just handled it differently. Sad indeed.

TheWolf
10-02-2008, 02:49 PM
Either that or porsche knows they're right. I think in most track situations porsche would pwn the gtr. Stock vs Stock. Porsche brakes and oil coolers and suspension are just race duty parts where GTR isn't. Germans are analytical and if they say it's 29 seconds off with stock tires then it's probably a 20 lap computerized statistical analysis where the net result on a good day average is 29 seconds. Even bruno senna made a remark about that on 5th gear when he drove the two head to head. The GTR did great for one lap but with the weight of the car the performance could not be sustained.

They changed tires...big fucking whoop even if they did. If they changed the suspension, then that might be a legit moan and groan. Anybody can change tires. He'll most people who buy sportscars probably change tires anyway to cater their own personal needs. I know if I ever buy a sports car, im changing those bitches to AD07s quick.

^^^ i can understand that its just tires, and i agree its no big deal. but lets say porsche is right, then nissan should have used the tires they used to claim that track time as the production model tires.

Let porsche put some slicks on the 911 and the GT and take it around again...

You guys think Porsche would put this kind of schenanigans out without actually testing it a bunch of times? Walter Rohrl probably drove it around and said it can't be done. I'd take that source as reliable.

lol yeah i guess your right, anything that can affect 25 seconds....is kind of a big deal. I agree that porsche is a legit ass company and i highly doubt they would make a statement like this without being able to back it up.

I cant wait to hear an official statement made by nissan about this.

Not saying this is the end all or anything, but out of curiosity I looked up some times on top gear's test track:

8. 1:19.7 – Nissan GT-R
10. 1:19.8 – Porsche Carrera GT
18. 1:22.3 – Porsche 911 GT3 RS
41. 1:26.2 – Porsche 911 Carrera S

The 911 Turbo placed 78th with a time of 1.31.0, but the track was "very wet".

+1, tire compound is a huge factor. Just by changing tire compounds you can drop seconds off your time, and that's just on an AutoX size course. It's why some classes let you run street tires, semi race, and full slicks.

If nissan didn't run the ring as we were let to believe "off the showroom" that is not good.

Either way the (personally not a fan) Viper ACR ran a 7:22. Goodnight ZR1 and GTR.

Well that's simple to prove. Why not Nissan just put race slicks on the GT-R and post a much better time then the 7:29 to prove them it was factory tires, this will make em shut the hell up!

i dont know much about the gtr. i havnt stopped at the nissan dealer yet. but from what i remember reading its what, like 47x hp, and 44x torque, with a 0-60 at like 3.5 right? being that i havnt driven one, and will not likely ever will, i dont know how they handle. i do love nissan, but i also like porsche very much. the turbo is rated at 480hp, 460 torque, and a 0-60 of 3.4. now i dont think there is too much difference in handling between the two cars. but for the skyline to be 9 seconds faster than the turbo on that track is a huge difference. i dont know if the 25 seconds slower thing is real or porsche is just trying to make nissan look real bad. but it wouldnt surprise me that nissan did maybe change tires and gave them that 9 second advantage over the turbo. i honestly think that the skyline should be around the same time as the turbo. the gt2 is a very very limited production porsche that is now out of production again. it also boasts more power and less weight, with incredible handling. so to compare the skyline to the gt2 is not right. the gt2 i think did the ring in like what 1.30 or something real close to that. it of course is also twice the price of the gtr. i'm just trying to state things objectively.

The GTR comes with two tire options michelins or dunlops, the dunlops are not run flats IIRC so they may have provided better grip. Whereas porsche probably grabbed one with the crappy michelins on it.

EDIT** It's Bridgestones and Dunlops for the US cars, not sure which ones the Germans had.

C. Senor
10-03-2008, 05:41 PM
^and porsche's use bridgestone and michelin. maybe they should run both cars using the bridgestones because they're probably the same tire. would only make sense....lol

Which Porsche? Ive seen many come with Continental tires and Pirelli's.

the turbo's and gt series porsche's mainly come with(and mainly i mean basically every one i've seen) michelins and bridgestones. the other models use conti's and pirelli's. as well as michi's and bridgestones. they have a pretty wide selection of tires that they can come with. i'll double check tomorrow at work. i believe we have 8 turbo's. i'll take a note of what exactly is on them.

yep, michelin pilot sport 2's. always see them in the dumpster at the porsche dealer next door. 245/40/18's and 285/35/18's, always bald as fuck too. but why is porsche testing it against the GT2? its not suposed to be a GT2 killer, and i hate everyone that uses the Viper ACR in those tests. no shit its gonna go faster than all the cars its race ready. test the ACR against the Vspec when it comes out and then lets see how great it is.

0100
10-03-2008, 08:06 PM
Of course the ACR will be tested against the Vspec, kinda hard to do that now though wouldn't you say.

It's a production car, and right now it's king of the ring. GM and Nissan could release a Club Racer version you can order right from the dealer, no one is telling them they can't. Like I said I'm not a viper fan, but I think they did a great job!

silviaguy240
10-03-2008, 08:30 PM
im just saying, its not really in the class with the cars its being tested against right now. use a regular viper right now and when the ZR1 and Vspec come out have another test.

10-03-2008, 09:20 PM
Why wouldn't dodge throw their best dog at the ring. It's not there fault they are ahead of the game. Also it doesn't really matter when these ring times are done as the cars are being finished at different times. This ACR ring time is going against the GTR time that was done months ago.

Ah I see, I am the opposite. I could pretty much careless what most rags say. That said, I think it's understandable for them to do so. Not many cars in that performance area to pit against. Nissan, Porsche, GM, and Dodge and not much else. It's a car a GTR owner will have to contend with if they bring their car to the track, so why not have them be tested against each other in a rag. It's going to happen in real life. You should always want to go up against the best. Nissan could bitch out and say the ACR isn't what they are after, but I can tell you right now they know what the ACR did at the ring and they are going to do everything they can to get the Vspec around the ring faster. I love these ring wars it breeds great cars!

This is something that can be debateable in so many different ways its not even funny. Whether its tires, driver error, etc. Why cant Porsche be the bigger people and admit defeat, and strike back with something better. You cant hold your position for ever.

The ring is one of the best testing surfaces on the planet. It is impossible to replicate what the ring has without going through the history of it. As a matter of fact, it is so good, Benz engineers have a mock track in a computer in which they compute suspension load on their cars with when they put it on whatever the hell you call a suspension stress tester.

I will say this: Porsche did not call out Nissan without proper provocation. Do you know what this would do to their publicity if they called them out only to be kicked in the ass? Germans aren't like that... trust me, I know, I moved here :naughtyd:

On the other hand, I have no doubt the GT-R is fast. The circumstances around it though, obviously are in question. I say hold all judgment until we see what Nissan says. If they don't respond, obviously something is afoot.

You can't deny dodge did a great job on the viper acr. It was 7 sec faster than the GTR and 6 sec faster than the 430, and this is on a much MUCH smaller track than the ring.

I am very impressed with it. Maybe I will take a flat black one so it hides it's ugliness. lol

You guys do realize the ACR is pretty much a race car right? I know in one of the tests done by a magazine (I forget which) Dodge actually sent out a technician to adjust the suspension depending on the track. Nice putting that up against a stock production car.

10-05-2008, 03:23 AM
IMO a few things Nissan got right, and no other cars can quite fall into this catagory in price, versatility & performance wise. Closest thing in these catagories is the C6 Vette but unfortunately unless its a Z06 model, it doesnt quite compare favorably enough to a GTR performance wise and lacks rear seats (not really needed but hey its nice to have).

1) It performs like a supercar should, fast, agile, responsive.
2) Its roomy and comfortable, can seat 4 if needed.
3) Its got a actual usable trunk space.
4) Cheaper then most any other sports cars in this performance catagory and it's unique.
5) Most likely will be more reliable then the other exotic car's respective class.

Im sure everyone will have their opinions but this is mine. :2f2f:

You guys do realize the ACR is pretty much a race car right?

:mepoke:

i hate everyone that uses the Viper ACR in those tests. no shit its gonna go faster than all the cars its race ready.

It's a production car, and right now it's king of the ring. GM and Nissan could release a Club Racer version you can order right from the dealer, no one is telling them they can't. It's a car a GTR owner will have to contend with if they bring their car to the track, so why not have them be tested against each other in a rag. It's going to happen in real life. You should always want to go up against the best.

Again it is a production car you can buy off the showroom floor and drive home, get inspected and insured. Drive it to work if you like. It's in the same price range. Please tell me again why they shouldn't be tested against each other?

Hey guys in my opinion Porsche is just worried that they wont be able to compete with the likes of NISSAN considering their V-Spec GT-R is due out next year. Just a reason to get more design in for the GT2 and turbo

If Porsche did pull off a consistent result on the ring as Nissan claimed, i think they would have just said, "Oh shit." and made the next 911 a LOT better... Let's see how Nissan responds.

I always find accusations like this flawed. Only way I could this being a valid accusation is if all other variables were to be as controlled as possible. Same tires, same driver, weather, track, etc. Until I see other independent tests, i'll stick with the gtr. Granted I'm a bit bias towards it, however so far from what I've seen, the gtr really kicks some ass. also, C&D is about as least credible source out there. I take reviews with a grain of salt.

The most valid comparison of the GTR and the Porshe would be to stick both cars on a track the same day, same time, at the same place. Tires on each must be available from the showroom floor. As was said before, tire compound, size, and tread pattern all play an enormous roll in time around a track. And due to the differences in the vehicles, one driver behind the wheel of both doesn't make sense. Both Nissan and Porshe should supply a test driver that know how to handle their vehicles. Only a situation such as this would provide us with a truly accurate comparison.

Ultimate showdown...I just wish that the enthusiast world would get to see it.

Nissan offers more evidence of GT-R 'Ring run: second video and pic of tires

Nissan released a second video of the incredible 7:29 lap time achieved by the GT-R earlier this year at the Nürburgring Nordschleife along with a photo of the stock tires that were installed on the car at the time. It did so to dispel accusations that the time might not be 100% authentic. Porsche in particular seemed highly suspicious, and boldly claimed its belief that Nissan wasn't using stock tires at the time. The new video starts with some off-track buildup and shows the 50kg of test equipment that was on-board the car at the time, as well. Although we don't speak Japanese, we think that's what they're talking about along with discussing the fresh stock tires that were fitted to the car. The actual lap starts about 4 minutes in and looks pretty authentic to us. We're sure there will continue to be questions and complaints from all sides in this controversy, and we know that this is starting to turn into a a bit of a melodrama, but we really can't help ourselves.

JESUS CHRIST look at the entry speed of that one turn at 1:43. That's a famous turn too, don't know what it's called haha. Once again, things like this make me proud to own a Nissan.
