View Full Version : How to get pinion nut off?
Damn that thing is on tight! I tried breaking it with a breaker bar + cheater + my leg and it wouldn't budge. Any tips?
I decided to tear apart my current pumpkin as a learning experience and to get the Cusco LSD out to sell. I got eveything out except this pinion.
I'll just have to learn how to measure backlash and all that once I start assembling the new pumpkin HLSD and 3.36 R&P.
This is fun seeing how everything bolts into the pumpkin. It doesn't seem so bad now. Can't believe I was about to pay someone $250+ to do this.
Oh and I don't have an impact.

Air? The electric impacts they sell often aren't powerful enough, but you may get lucky. I have both, the electric one is a Ridgid, super nice, and I find I never get it out of the case most times. The air one gets worn out though.

Exactly what everyone said. I used a compressor with my impact gun and it was out with no sweat.

Ridgid elec impact guns are worth while?
Every one I run into sucks pretty hard.
It would be nice to have a quality electric gun because I don't want to fire up the compressor for late night jobs.

It's not the best by far but it's better than a few others I've used in the past. Still it won't break anything loose above maybe 60ft-lbs. I had a Dewalt one time that wouldn't even break loose the hood hinge bolts.
the pinion nut and the pinion spin as one so when your trying to loosen the pinion nut the pinion itself is turning.. you have to keep the pinion/driveshaft part from moving while trying to loosen the nut... no bueno
basically Nissan has a special tool that connects to the driveshaft part to keep it from moving so you can loosen the nut.
I was in the same shoes, I was not able to get it off...
I took it to the shop where I was getting my backlash and tooth contact adjusted and they were able to get it off.

I took it to the shop where I was getting my backlash and tooth contact adjusted and they were able to get it off. Yeah I'm thinking I might just do that cause even if I get the tools I have to figure out how to keep it from moving. Might just have an experienced shop deal with it.
you're using a new gear ratio correct? if so, I suggest taking it to a shop anyways
adjusting backlash and tooth pattern isn't a first timer thing
