So, in light of the current state of...well.. the state.. I need to get myself a state/government job. I just wanted to see if there was anyone on Zilvia that is or has been a CA state employee that could offer some general guidance. I have been to all the sites and I find it a little challenging. My trouble is, I'm not really qualified with most of the jobs. The only thing I have on my resume is a high school diploma and an honorable discharge from the military. I know the first thing that pops into peoples mind when they read that is a law enforcement officer, but as of right now, I'm interested in a job not a career. I want something I can do 9-5 and not think about till the next work day. Anyways.. if you apply.. post up what you did/do and what you had to get the position. If you just happen to know more then the everyday person, post up too. Thanks

Step 1: Find Exams for a State Job - State Personnel Board - spb.ca.gov (http://www.spb.ca.gov/jobs/apply/index.htm)
I'm a state worker. The best part of where I work was that WE weren't affected by the budget cuts (no $6.55/hour federal wage for us). We don't accept any money from the government so it was just business as usual, but we still are a part of the the State of California.
Check the link above, all state jobs are "linked". That's the beauty of where I work -- I can move anywhere. Its just a matter of experience/seniority and if/when you transfer you get to take along your seniority, benefits and sick/vacation time - there's so many places in California so there's always opportunity. Lots of positions open in Northern California and we have people transfer from San Diego... and vice-versa.
Not all agencies are the same, and some have their own direct hiring group, but the link above cover the basics.
Submit application (general application)
Get notified for test/examination
Oral interview -- if you pass written test
Get on a Ranking List (Prefer you rank 1 to 3 so you'll be considered)
Interview
Get job
Profit
Its not that tough, but its very "methodical". I remember giving them my resume right out of college, they contacted me 3 months later to take a test and another 3 months after that, I got an interview. I've been there over 3.5 yrs and recently moved to another department.
Its very tough to get into the "professional" positions without a Bachelors (even if its in Sociology, all they care about is the BA/BS) but there are lower positions that don't require more than a High School Diploma.
Just apply for those and you can suppliment your experience for education and take another test for the next position/promotion.
They will also give preference (ranking) for Veterans so your military service might put you over the top to a similiar ranking.
Just remember -- you'll get shit for being a government worker... I know I do. But then I ask them why they're working on "Flag Day". Usually ends any crap I get as I'm home on a "paid holiday". :keke:

Like i said, I have been to the sites. I didn't realize it took that long to get a job though.. I hope that's not normal lol. I'm also trying to take advantage of the fact that if I'm working for the state/government, I can't get recalled. And who knows who we are going to go to war with next :rl: All I know is I don't want to be there!

You could try and get a job with the county. My friend who has a high school diploma works 8-5 monday-friday and brings in about 2k something a month working for butte county. I forgot the position title but all he does is interview people to see if they qualify for food stamps and medicare? or something like that.
He just applied, few months later got a interview, passed the interview and got hired.

That's nice, only I don't have a Bachelors Degree. But I wouldn't mind working for a law enforcement agency as a civilian.
