View Full Version : Dumb girl question re: 1989 240SX
dumbblondeina240sx

Hi, I have a 1989 240sx hatchback and I think it's the S13. I was driving and it started to overheat, I turned on the heater and that helped cool it back down until I could get off the freeway and stop. I checked the antifreeze and it still had plenty, after it cooled down I tried to drive it home (only about a mile) and now the heater didn't work, the car was stalling, the engine was smoking and the add oil light kept coming off and on.
I love this car and don't want to get rid of it. Can anyone give me suggestions on what the problem might be, and recommendations on someone in San Diego County to fix it? I'm a single mom with very limited $$$ but access to a discount on junk yard stuff. And I've had bad luck with car repair places trying to jack me up with unnecessary stuff because I'm a woman and don't know better. :( Any help would be totally appreciated, thanks!

are you getting white smoke out of the tail pipe? (if yes, then you have a bad head gasket)
is your antifreeze still bright green? or is it murky and brownish?
does your oil still look like oil? or does it look like chocolate milk.
i hope i'm not sounding like i'm interrogating you, i'd just like more info so we can help you pinpoint your problem and get you back on the road.
The oil light coming on and off is really bad news. That's the oil PRESSURE light, and when it goes off you essentially have no oil flowing through your engine and things tend to grind themselves to death in a hurry.
When you say you checked the antifreeze, did you look at the white plastic tank on the passenger side of the engine bay with a yellow cap, or did you actually wait for the engine to cool down(VERY IMPORTANT!) and open the radiator cap? There should be no air space between the radiator cap and the coolant level.
The questions above are good to help determine what actually happened so you can be more informed what needs to be fixed. The good news is that the engines in these cars are very stout so you have a good chance you're still ok with some repairs.

well i hope it wasnt smoking to bad. first check the oil level. clean the dipstick then reinsert it back in and check the level. if its dry you might be in trouble. also while checking it make sure it is not a milky color if it is then you blew your head gasket and are looking at a 500 dollar job at minimum. then check the coolant and the radiator and see if it has water. what i would suggest is to remove the water pump and see if thats the culprit. If not its usually the thermostat or radiator. so try to get someone or even yourself to remove the water pump and check it and the thermostat to see if it one of those is your problem then let us know what you find out from that.

Bingo. There is and never has been a low oil light on any Nissan, period. You can have ten quarts of oil and still trip the light from low pressure. From the sounds of it you have overheated, more than likely blowing the head gasket.

Hopefully it didnt get to the headgasket yet. Check your oil and do a oil change while you are at it. Pretty much do a tune up job. Overheating will either be your waterpump, thermostat or lack of coolant. You should just replace all three. Under 100 for everything.

Wow, thank you so much to everyone who replied here!!!!
I looked at the coolant in the overflow thingy, but not in the radiator.
It had busted a radiator hose the day before, but out of nowhere - it wasn't overheated, or at least the temperature gauge did not show it. I immediately pulled over and had it towed, somebody put another hose on, and it was fine until the next afternoon when it started overheating.
One of the kids where I work checked the oil and said it looks like there's water in it. So that probably means a head gasket....right? Figures.
Thanks again for all your help!

She got a lot better treatment then any guy would have, that's for sure :keke:
I bet $20 whoever put a new hose on the car didn't fill the cooling system back up with coolant/water, which caused it to overheat. This causes the headgasket to blow(head is aluminum, block is iron - head will expand more with heat = warping). I'm betting enough water got in the oil and thinned it out enough to trigger the oil light. It's probably very "chocolate milk like" when you take the oil dipstick out.
Unfortunately a headgasket is a pain in the ass to replace, even though these engines are pretty easy to work on, so a shop is going to charge $500-1500 in labor alone.
Smoke plus oil light sound very bad. Sorry.

Get ready for a headgasket replace, and maybe having the head resurfaced.
Our motors are pretty stout and can take some overheating, but when you get smoke... its not good news.
Good luck and welcome to the forums :D

For 1500 you could prob pick up a new motor and Have it installed thats your best bet. Or if you want to be super cool Mom you should just get a turbo motor (CA18DET) it wouldn't cost you all that much more just a thought tho =] good luck

I would so love to have a turbo motor, LOL. I already like how the car handles, and to speed it up would be even better.
That leads to another question....Is it possible to pull the motor out of a 93 and swap it? Mine's an 89.
Thanks again everyone!
brndck
09-26-2008, 08:55 PM
yes it is possible to install a 93 motor in an 89. it will require some wiring modification, but the 93 motor is a dual cam engine which is a good upgrade from the single cam 1989 engine. (i hope i dont sound like i'm talking down to you).

09-26-2008, 09:01 PM
Your best routes would be to either :
A. Have someone check out how bad you damaged the engine, if at all. (Then, replace the headgasket)
B. If thats not possible, and its worse than we think, KA24E motors arnt to hard to come buy, and are fairly cheap, I picked one up with 86K miles on it for 500$. (shipped)
C. Go balls out and spend the extra cash either goign CA18DET, KA24E-T, SR, and so on.
s13 @ fullboost
09-26-2008, 09:01 PM
you will need the ECU for a 93 DOHC and power steering lines for the swap. Your gauge cluster can still be used but its easy to just swap in a DOHC one. Other than that it is pretty much a straight forward simple swap remember to keep us posted =]

The thing about swapping in a new motor is in CA to register your vehicle, you're supposed to have a motor that was available from the factory in that vehicle, in that year, in california. I just swapped from SOHC AT to DOHC 5spd. Pretty straight forward, but if you get a really finicky smog guy he might fail you for a non-compliant motor. (not likely though) You need the DOHC ps lines, DOHC tach, DOHC Ignition coil, DOHC ECU, and so on... I luckily had a driving donor to pull from. If you were to go with an SR20 or a CA18 you'll have a much harder time to get it to pass smog. (sometimes you'll get lucky and the smog tech wont notice) Luckily though you most likely wouldn't get pulled over for the motor being an older woman driving. (Cops tend to look for the young punks like me :p ) Search the forums here, and also read through NICO for answers to all of your tech questions. You should be able to get any and all of your questions answered without as much as asking another question.

you may love a car, but its not always the best choice to keep it. often times, finding another chassis with less mechanical headaches may better choice for someone like yourself that isnt sure about their chassis code at the least. and a dohc swap is not fun and Lisa stated pretty much lol.

$425 for a shell is a deal. She'll spend less in a worst case scenario of having to swap another motor in there then buying one with a healthy motor in socal.

Please, talk down to me. I don't know anything about the technical stuff.
I'm asking about the swap because there's a 93 going up for sale at my work, the engine runs OK but it has body damage so it'll probably sell for < $300. I was wondering if it might end up costing less to just swap the whole thing out than to go have the head gasket fixed.

yeah, she'll spend less. goes back to what Lisa asked. what are the long term goals and is this your daily etc etc. btw, i picked up this s14 for 2500 minus the wheels and a vandalized interior. good motor blah blah blah. unless its a dealer only auction, youre getting fooled, i know, my dad has been in the game for 30 years going to Adesa, Manheim auctions.

How many miles on the 93? Auto or manual?
$300 is good for a complete DOHC swap. There are some good swap guides on here as you need a few more parts then the engine. Like the PS system.

Thanks, I didn't take it into a shop though - a tow truck driver helped me. I do know he put antifreeze in the radiator because I was watching him do it.

If I had the extra $$ to do modifications, my car would definitely not still be stock. :D
The coolant system should have been bled after he put the hose back on. I'm assuming he didn't do that, and that's what caused it to overheat.
Like others said, the overheating probably caused a blown head gasket.

I'm in San Diego and I know of a few good repair shops that do good, reliable decently priced work. Problem is, you said you're in Southeast SD, and these places are in North Park.
If that's not a problem, check out Nutek Auto Repair. Call them up, tell them what's wrong, and they can give you a good quote over the phone. Typically their quotes are right on. Otherwise, if you drop your car off for them to look at it, they'll call you and give you a quote over the phone before starting any work on it. I've taken a few trips there and have always been satisfied.
Another place is called Henry's Radiator repair. They do more than radiator work, so don't let the name fool you. I haven't taken my car here, but my Father-in-law swears by it. Been going there for 10+ years. I prefer Nutek.
Also, if you haven't already, check out SDDrift.com as a local forum with many 240 owners who might be able/willing to help you out.
I would offer physical help, but I don't have much time to offer with a new car on my hands and trying to sell the wife's old car...

^^ Thank you! ETA: Getting the car to North Park is feasible, I work for a tow truck company LOL Where is this Nutek place at?
I've got what I think is good news, I got somebody to do a compression check and all the cylinders were good.....but one of my spark plugs was messed up and the oil cap was gone! How the heck THAT happened, I have no idea. Only thing I can think of is maybe the tow truck driver who replaced the radiator hose took it off and forgot to put it back on, but I don't know why he'd do that. I had an oil change in May and nobody's touched that cap since.
Anyway, I guess maybe that explains why that add oil light came on and why oil smoke was coming from the engine? (It blew out oil and made an icky mess.)
That still doesn't explain the overheating problem, though. :-/

When you say 'messed up', can you give detail, or at least a picture of it? It's possible you had detonation and this caused a variety of issues...

I bet if she posted she was 60yrs old, 300lbs, and covered in warts you all would shut down and run. I guess it's true what I hear, car forum people really do have no life. Some of you guys need to buy a hooker and get it over with. I'll say it now, she's not doing any of you guys, no matter what you try.

It had busted a radiator hose
This is a burn. I had my lower radiator hose explode in my engine bay and now there is a nice copper haze on the left side of the bay. I've tried everything to try and get this off. After washing it, the damn haze comes back when it dries. It's grrrrrrrrrrrr. If anyone has a suggestion on removing this (short of stripping the engine bay and sanding/repainting), please PM me.

Well first off let me start of by saying hello and welcome. Im new on here too but not new to nissans or nissan forums for that matter.
First off the reason your car probably overheated is that when the guy put the hose back on...he didnt get all the air out of your coolant system...thus for causing it to let the water boil and overheat. Thats why the first time you turned your heater on you had heat...and the second time you didnt. Either so much water had boiled out that there wasnt enough to circulate through the heater core or you just had that much damn air in the coolant system. Easy way to fix that is take your radiator cap off...fill it with as much water as you possibly can (while the engine is completely cold...dont want to cause other problems). After you do that start the car with the cap still off. While the car is running and warming up...use this time to make sure your coolant reservoir is at the right level. Once your engine warms up to running temp the thermostat should open causing the water to circulate and the air should come out through where the radiator cap goes. Add more water. If the thing starts blowing hot water everywhere its a good idea to back up...cut the car off...and let it cool down. This is how ive always bled the air out of my coolant system and its always worked. I had a sentra se-r that had just a tiny bit of air on the coolant and it caused the thing to overheat like crazy.
I hope that helps. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I just bought an 89 coupe shell and put a single cam in it so i kinda know the stupid thing inside and out. Also Who ever made the comment about it costing 1500 bucks for another motor and blah blah. I picked up a ka24e with 113K miles on it, a 5 speed tranny, harness and ecu...for 375 bucks...and had it put in the car in two nights after coming home from work.

Your reading comprehension skills suck worse than a dead squirrel. Nowhere did I say it's wrong to help out a new member. Nowhere did I say I'm better than you for pointing that out. And if you have any clue who I am you'll shut the fuck up and sit back, I've answered more BS nonsense than anyone on this board for longer than you've known what a car is.
My point, for the people who failed 1st grade, is that anyone else asking this question who has a penis would get the 'search' flame for three posts and then disappear into last week's ignored threads. No one would bring it back to light, no one would care to do much other than offer a lame ass guess. Go back ten pages and you'll find plenty of threads like this. Mainly because it's a common question that anyone could have answered by searching. But in this thread, with the notion that the OP is cute, single, and has breasts, you guys are going way out of the way to help. Nothing wrong with that, I appreciate anyone willing to help. But the fact is none of you guys would put this much effort in if she was a dude. I congratulate us all for coming together as a community, but to suggest the ones helping are great members who do their part is BS. Most of you are just swinging the dick and trying to impress the OP by talking completely out of your ass.
Carry on. At least we know she'll be a welcome member for years to come.

Dang. If I offended anyone by asking for help here, that was certainly not my intent. The screen name was meant to poke fun at myself for asking dumb questions because I don't know anything about cars.
And to everyone here who did give me suggestions etc., I really appreciate your help. I was really upset when I came on here and if nothing else, it helped me feel a lot better that this could be dealt with and wasn't going to be catastrophic.
Once again, I was simply looking for advice from people who are familiar with this kind of car, not trying to cause trouble, and I apologize to anyone who took that the wrong way.
