i noticed about a month ago a loud whining noise in my s13 when i go about 40 mph, it gets realy loud then goes away at higher speeds. It sounds kind of like when you revers fast. What could cause this, i changed my trans oil about 6 months ago and have not noticed any leaks so i should have corect amount of fluid. when i put it in nutral at the peak of the noise it gets quieter.

Hmm, if you changed your flywheel to a lighter one, it might have something to do with that, it does affect drive train noises Another thing it could be, is the throw out bearing... maybe.

i had my fidanza fly whelel for 2 years and only now i noticed it got loud. i have no carpet to, but its louder now, throw out bearing only moves when clutch is engaged right? the noise is when im driving in 3rd or fourt gear

could be feedback from your alternator into your speakers. Just throwing that out there.

If it was that wouldn't he hear it at idle as well?

Could be that the trans or diff is low on gear oil. My trans is low on oil and it whines like a turbo in third gear.

if you put it in neutral when its the loudest and it goes away it is in the transmission. these cars are old, lots of miles and hard driving wears the bearings out. probably time for a rebuild or a new transmission.

wheel bearing its either one or both of them. im trying to figure out if its a task i should do myself or a real pro, ive done everything else on my car by either fsm or experience but i heard i need a press and since its my daily dont wonna get stuck out of work...but im trying to find a good price n reputable place ive only found 300 for one side so yea its your wheel bearings good luck

It's feedback from the passenger. Get a new passenger or roll with out one :rimshot:

how can you tell if a wheel bearing is messed up

it will start to click. eventually get louder. then you will notice play. jack your car up and try to move the tire. if it moves up and down, its the bearing. if left and right it could be a tie rod/end

to the op. you could remove the whiner. jk..

Same here, added more oil through the shifter and the noise is gone, with the recommended amount from the FSM in there it whined.

is it a sunroof or a moonroof? cause if its a moonroof u need either new molding or the lil handle cause u lost pressure i had that prob with mine... so u kno its that for sure while ur driving put some force on the handle to put pressure on the window and it should should stop...

let us know if low oil was the cause. I've been having the same issue, but I haven't been able to try anything due to other issues.

When you put it in reverse and back up, is there any 'clunk' noise when you start moving backwards?

My old cusco diff with bad bearings used to do that... around 40 to 50 it would whine. Then whine again at 80.

It eventually broke

gear oil.. try adding some before trying to change out the throw out bearing... hopefully that is your problem...

I'm gonna say that the bad bearing idea in your diff is a good one.

Change your oil first and hopefully you'll luck out. Could be that you have shavings stuck in the bearing causing it to whine.

I lucked out. My noise was just cause of the stereo.
