My car overheats only when I have a quarter of a tank of gas or less.

Also, my car runs really well when I have a full tank of gas.

Why is this exactly?

I'm sure this is a lame ass question, but I do not know the answer.

have you tried using a temp gun tool to check it when it happens?

might just be a case of faulty instruments

Fuel filter is brand new. If that's what you meant.

Oh it's def hot. The coolant in the overflow tank boils.

I know I need to change the coolant, but why would it only do it when my gas is low?

You know you need to change coolant, but do you also now you need a new engine soon or a rebuild. The more you drive with temp overheating the more you will be paying for repair.
start of with replace coolant, thermostat, and check fan operation, flow of coolant.
your quarter of a tank could hardly cause it, maybe your fuel pump isn't flowing well so you end up leaning the mixture = cause higher temp, but still even if so, your cooling system should reduce the temp.

boiling coolant in the tank isn't a good thing.
had that happen to me once, faulty radiator cap.

Or just threaten it by calling over one of your Honduh bois over to talk about trading it for his civic. Works with my s14...

it's been covered a few times apparently. But I hope he gets his motor issue resolved. =(

I've been driving it like this for a month or so now. I don't drive the car during the winter so I guess this'll be my winter project on the car.

Thanks for the help.

when you low on gas , you check gauges more. does turning on the iinterior heater lower temp? get your rad checked.

Low gas in your tank should not cause your water temp to increase... There is a problem somewhere else...

I would suggest pressure checking and rebleeding your cooling system...
And always keep a good amount of gas in your car!...

that's because your car is like the owner.....:ghey: :keke:

maybe, there's a lot of crap in your tank. and when you go under 1/4 tank it picks it up and sends it the motors way. not getting pure fuel, the motor is burning the gas it does get hotter, thus overheating the motor. just a crazy theory.

No, cause 1) the sock on the pump would take care of a lot of that and 2) the filter under the hood would finish most of the job, thereby making the intermittent nature less likely to be related to trash

I'll have to come up with a winter plan. I'll probably get a new radiator. I also have mad leakage going on. So I might pull the motor and do a basic rebuild.

Fuel pump is going.

Pump over heats when it's not bathed in fuel cooling it. Lowers fuel output/presure.
You run lean.
Running lean = Hot.
