What is the safest and easiest way to wire single electric fan (i.e. slim fan). I got rid of the clutch fan, but I wanna leave the a/c electric fan there. All I'm trying to do is get a single slim fna to replace the old clutch version. I'm a newbie at wiring but so if anybody has suggestions on a easy way to wire without out fires or wires melting I'd appreciate it. I don't really understand relays.
Trying to decide if I want the fan to be temp control, or run all time by switch. Also does it hurt to mount the fan on the front as a pusher?
Thanks for anyhelp

Do you have dualfans?
I had 2 AC fans wired up, one to come on with ignition, and the second on a switch. You could do the same thing, or wire one up to a thermostat and have it kick on at X temp.

get a greddy MSS. or a DIF fan controller i personally have the MSS and it work flawlessly. 2 fans, come on at different temps and both turn off at the same temp. all u need is 2 relays, i just used 2 blue nissan relays and it works fine.
IIRC DIF unit doesnt require relays.

Well I had the stock setup clutch fan and a/c electric, but then I took the clutch off and left only the a/c. Haven't over heated yet cause I have some other upgraded cooling parts, but then again when I get on the gas it's only for short intervals. Like to be able to drive how I want without worrying of over heating.
All i wanna do is just keep my stock a/c fan and let it run how it's been running, but add one slim e-fan to replace the clutch.
There aren't any plug and play kits, sorta how generic foglights come where I can just hook to battery and mount switch?

you can just add a fan and wire in a switch, how long that switch will last i dunno...honstly do it right the 1st time use a relay its simple to wire and you can just get a "thermo switch" from most auto-parts stores. but if your cheap you can get a thermo switch from any 89-90 sohc (used to turn on a/c fan) put that in the radiator hose and wire it to a relay.
relay wiring is simple, most relays have 4/5 pins
#85 gets ground
#86 gets 12V
#87 gets switch source (in this case switch goes ground)
#87a not used
#30 goes to fan ground
then all you have to do it provide the fan a FUSED 12v source.
if you are just going to use a switch connect one end to #87 and the other to a ground, also connect the fan to IGN 12V (other wise fan will be on with car off)
if using a thermo switch connect one end to #87 and other to ground

You can do that but you'd have to remember to turn it on when you drive and off when you dont. Else you drain the battery. You can also just wire it to the ignition so when your cars on the fans stay on and when you turn off the car it turns off.

Okay thanks for taking the time to break that down. So what is the purpose of a relay anyway. Does it reduce the load or something.
Anyway the way i would like to run this is based of temp, so inother words a thermoswitch I guess. Those tubes that go in the rad fins are that correct?
So I take the relay and...
Pin 85 I run one wire and ground it
Pin 86 I run to a power source (is there a ign fuse on the inside fuse box,
and how do you tap)
Pin 87 gets power wire from thermo switch and then I ground the switches
ground wire
Pin 87a skip
Pin 30 connect fan ground wire too?
Alright something else I thought of I saw some wire kits on jegs include relay and fuse..so which one really takes the hit when something goes wrong.
Thanks again to everyone who posted

basically, thermo switches are just that a switch, there is no positive or negative, all they do is close a circuit when they get to temp.
the relay will handle amprage, most automotive switches will not and eventually burn up. (i have 1st hand experience, which is y i recomend a relay on anthing that will draw a lot of amps)
the jegs kit is good kit, that will/should contain everything u need, and the fuse will pop b4 the relay.
im not sure if there is a IGN12v in the underhood fuse box, i've never needed one there, but if you have a test light you can find one easily.
let me know how it goes

goto summit racing, they have generic and fan gizmo that help do what you are looking for.

Seems most likely what I'm looking for, plus adjustability of fan activation temp.
So whats the best way to tap into a 12v ign source. I read searching on here, that it's not ideal to use fuel pump fuse.
Also do those radiator fin probes read pretty accurate, and wheres best place to put it on a stock radiator.
Thanks

I'm using this to control it, its simple and I have had no problems with it. But I can't remember how i wired it right now.
Flex-a-lite 31147 - Flex-a-lite Adjustable Electric Fan Controllers - summitracing.com (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=FLX-31147&N=700+115&autoview=sku)
And pusher fans aren't as efficient as puller fans. If you have room behind the radiator.. put the fans there.

I'm actually thinking about just putting my clutch fan back on after reading this. If I decide to go e-fan later down the road I'll re-read this thread.
Right now my clutch fan is sitting in my room. I can spin the fan either way with a slight resistance, but not like I have to put any real muscle behind it to do so. Anyway to tell if the clutch is bad before putting the whole assembly back on?
Also any certain brands to look for when looking for replacement clutch...ebay doesn't offer much

NAPA has fixed and adjustable universal fan controllers. Follow directions in package = easiest, safest, AND (almost) cheapest.

Hmm I keep that in mind thank you both. Anyone have any inputon my questions regarding how I can tell if my clutch fan is good

just bolt it on, its 4 nuts. lazy fuck.
eh keeping the clutch fan is were its at. electrics are just a pain in the ass imo.

I recommend grounding out the fan relay in the fuse box to run continuous, if you're in a hot climate. If not use the stock fan wiring and leave the relay alone it will come on when the temp hits 180~

Hey jack ass I didn't ask how to put it on, I was asking how to determine if it's working properly. Obviously if I got it off I can put it back on. You wasted what 7 secs of your life to make that post, and it still had nothing to do with what I ask.

:goyou:
it had everything to do with what you asked. taking the 2 minutes to bolt it back on will easily determine if it works.

Arrrh I could put it on and yeah it would spin, heck it would spin before I took if off. That doesn't mean it's still effiecient. Thats what I need an answer for. Reason why i ask if there's a way I can tell with it off the car in my hand, is it would be smarter for me to just put on a new one on if needed, rather than findinging out it is bad, and then having to take if back off to put a new one on.
