Gt2871rs??

I am looking to do a new turbo for the SR but can make up my mind. The three turbos i have been looking at are the

Gt28r - s15 turbo
GT28RS
GT2871r

I do a lot of autocross so i know best spool would be with the disco potato but i came across this turbo the other day. it is a gt2871r with a gt28r compresser housing

I want to know how this would affect this turbo..would spool be better?..can i get the 2871 power with the 28r spool?

I haven't been able to find anyone who has used this turbo yet so in theory how would this turbo differ?

ya but no there is lot of gt2871r stuff there but not to much on a gt2871r with gt28r compressor just want to know how this would affect the turbo characteristics

It's not a gt2871 with a gt28rs compressor housing. It's the gt2871 with the gt28rs style compressor housing meaning the 2 bolt inlet and the 3 bolt outlet opposed to the silicone elbow that you would have to slide on to the other one.

Spool is going to be a within a gnat's ass of a 56 trim GT2871R of the same turbine A/R.

Same with power potential. The turbine will hold it back before the compressor.

If you're buying new, I'd strongly suggest going with a GT2871R. The "Disco Potato" sucks, barely more power than a GT2560R(S14/S15 turbo), and spools worse with the 0.86 A/R housing 99% of them have. The GT2560R is a good turbo if you get it used for a decent price. I really liked mine, but not sure if I'd buy a new one.

The urge to go bigger is always there... so don't sell yourself short the first time around.

If you're buying used, I'd get a T28/GT2560R and call it a day until you want something bigger.

Yup I completely agree, I autox a lot as well. I have a 2871R .86 AR. With a bit of tuning the spool response is great. I had stock cams, a stock intake cam with a 256 step 1 cam, and now a 264 step 1 in/ex. So far, I think for autocrossing, I think the stock intake with a 256 step 1 exhaust cam works the best in terms of power delivery and response. Believe it or not 264 in/ex step 1's do well too, but the mid range power band is really strong and kicks hard and a bit much on a very techical short autox. On a SCCA autox course that lacks traction a 264 in/ex is not going to get you the best times.... I currently run a stock exhaust manifold to give it a smoother delivery, so its helping, but holds down top end for sure.

For response I get about 5 psi at 2700RPM and pretty much 12 psi at 3500 and 16 at about 4000. Trust me psi doesn't mean the same power you would get on a gt28rs, I think it has a crap load of torque, but I can't tell until I jump on a dyno, but definitely more kick than my t25 at 12 psi in the same range..... Hope this helps.
