Remember: there is no reset button.
So 2 days ago, Sunday the 21st, the guys from MontrealRacing.com went on our yearly UltraRide cruise up in the mountains near Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. Shit turned sour.
Nice start to the day....

Luckily, both driver and passenger came out unharmed. It's unbelievable how lucky they are to get out of that without a scratch.

How the fuck did they do that?
I've hit stationary objects at speeds above 60 mp/h but never figured out how to flip a car. I blame his mixing and matching of tires.
Why the hell would anyone mismatch tires on an AWD car? Just goes to show what can happen when you have fail sitting shotgun.

Some people can't distinguish between a well maintained track and a dirty unforgiving mountain road.
Going all out on something as unpredictable as a mountain road is fucking stupid.
Brought helmets like your gonna go all out, but the car doesn't have a cage? Not even a roll bar? Hmmm...

Ok guys, chill on the helmet deal, that Silvia with the helmet on it belongs to a friend of mone, he didn't wear it while driving! lol
What happened with the Skyline:
The road went up the hill and at the crest of the hill, the road took a hard 100 degree right turn at a pretty hard downward angle, fucking blind, fucking terrifying. According to the driver, he drove into the corner at 140kmh (86mph). Seeing as I was on the limit when I took that same corner at around 70kmh (43mph) shows how fast he was going.
So anyways, he launched off the hill crest into the side of the road, hit the mountain side and flipped the car in the ditch. He took out a couple of roads signs along the way to.
Both driver and passenger escaped without so much as a scratch! Amazing.

Assuming the guy knows something about driving which he probably doesn't, I can almost guarantee it would have been a different story if he wasn't mismatching tires. Why would you put a lesser tire in the front of a car that will randomly switch power to those wheels when they slip? Fucking moron.
He just took out his helmet to show us cause he just got it, he tracks his car on the weekends. Someone else took the pics.

The only thing I'm sad about in this thread is all of the people saying they are glad he crashed. Although I do feel that nobody should be going balls out on a road they don't know I think spirited mountain driving is fun and I do it whenever I get the chance. I know what my limits are and usually drive way below them because I don't want what happened to the guy in this thread to happen to me. Still though, none of you asshats should be glad this dude crashed.

You're hit and miss. Anyone glad he wrecked feels the same as you, they know their limits and don't push them, you're just more apathetic when they do push them or don't know the limits in the first place. Others are not, myself included.
Wrecking is part of learning, we all do it, but we also grow out of it after realizing our skills and also realizing a public road is the last place to test them. This kid did not. So no one is going to cry over his stupid, ignorant mishap. I drive mountains any chance I get too, but the difference is as you said, knowing your limits.

Why the hell would anybody approach a hill, that you don't know what is on the other side of, at 86 fucking mph????? That is just retarded! I ran canyons for YEARS and one of the first, common sense, things that you learn is that you DON'T GO BALLS OUT INTO BLIND ANYTHING UNLESS YOU KNOW THE ROAD LIKE THE BACK OF YOUR FUCKING HAND!!!!!!! I am glad that everything happened the way it did. Everyone is OK and the moron CLEARLY needed to learn that lesson the hard way. He should be happy that he was blessed enough to learn his lesson the hard way and not hurt anybody doing so. To all the people that feel inclined to feel sorry for the owner, DON'T! It is his own fucking fault and nobody else's. I too have totaled a car in the canyons. I learned MY lesson the hard way too, THREE TIMES. I don't expect anybody to express any sympathy for me and I refuse to do so for anybody that is in the same situation.

Now that I'll agree with. Both parts. You're all douchebags for allowing another douchebag to drive with you, crash, and make you look bad, and you're douchebags for leaving him stranded (even though we all would too). Secondly, drift kids are indeed the biggest douchebags. But they're not related to this thread, it was just a good point.

We were very clear to everyone before we left that the cruise was not a race, it wasn't a track day, it wasn't a place for douchebaggery. He didn't listen and paid for it.
We all checked to make sure he was alright before leaving. We all left because we didn't want the cops to give us a hard time because we want to keep doing our yearly cruise. Like I said, 2 cars stayed behind to help him out.

no one said not to do it, they just said know your limit and the cars limit before you do or this thing will always happen. usually with deaths involved.
7/10 i only recommend if you know the road very well, know your car very well, have cruised it within a couple of hours (rocks, trees, dirt on the road and all bets are now off) and are by yourself. no to any of those questions? 4/10 to 5/10 is still fun and you can avoid deer, hit a slick spot, dodge a rock in the road and still get out with some white knuckle driving.
he was at about 10/10 to 12/10 around a blind corner.

glad you fellas are ok. props for not being whiny pussys and hitting the canyons fast enough to actually crash.
I won't contest that we're all a bunch of jackasses, but you've got it all wrong.
This is why the driver is an idiot (bold points are key):
The road went up the hill and at the crest of the hill, the road took a hard 100 degree right turn at a pretty hard downward angle, fucking blind, fucking terrifying. According to the driver, he drove into the corner at 140kmh (86mph). Seeing as I was on the limit when I took that same corner at around 70kmh (43mph) shows how fast he was going.
The driver was driving way over the limit, on a blind corner no less, which makes it a stupid move.
There's a right way and a wrong way to do spirited driving- this is what happens when you do it the wrong way.

Glad to know they are OK. Me and a couple of other s and r chassis guys sometimes cruise (and I mean CRUISE) up the gatineau park hills. I never try speeding up there because the roads are bumpy as fuck and the smallest imperfection in hte road could cause your car to loose traction and understeer into a rock face.
Also, there's such a thing as spirited driving where you are going slightly faster than the speedlimit, and then there is being stupid, which is what your friend was doing.

Wah wah wah.
Everyone in here crying.
I don't have anything about driving on the street, actually I support it, as I don't like every cool car being made into a track-only car.
However, from what it sounds like, the guy was going all out on a road that he didn't even know, that is dumb.
Also, I hope all the other cars were gone when the police arrived, as accidents such as this only help promote a negative stereotype of modded cars, which has something to it, but ruins it for all the responsible people.
In a crash such is this, as long as no one is hurt, just keep it on the down low, I personally wouldn't even call the police (unless strictly required by law, in which case they'll probably automatically arrive with the tow truck anyway). Cry a little when your friends aren't looking, take your losses, and tow the car home to repair or part it out, the latter in this case.
Posting this on the internet is not a good idea either, as car forums are full of track rats and e-saints, and also frequented by authorities.
Be a smart auto enthusiast.

It IS stupid to drive a car with a full cage on the street, but ONLY if you don't have a racing bucket and are not wearing harnesses. In a "street" seat with stock belts you can move around too much in the event of an accident. With a race bucket and at least 4-point belts you are 1000% safer. And don't even try to start the whole "harnesses are not safe in a street car" bullshit.

The part quoted above is the part that makes you a fucktard. Who the hell would have a full cage, or ANY kind of cage for that matter, with STOCK seats and belts. That just doesn't make sense. You are arguing a non-sensical point. The guy driving around with stock seats and belts with a full cage is waaaayyyyyyyyy more of a dumbass for wasting his money on the cage before he got seats and belts then he is for driving it like that. A helmet would only marginally help in that situation.

If you have a cage you can mount the belts properly and not have to worry about spinal compression.
I live in the land of bolt in cages that don't come with harness bars and people who mount their harnesses using the rear seat belt bolts.
Harnesses are for ricers and stupid as shit for a street car. If your harness is mounted properly the only thing you should be able to reach is the steering wheel and the shifter.
Taking the thing off every time I wanna diddle with my CD player would get annoying, fast.

What about stock seatbelts on a racing bucket seat with a cage?

you guys are all tards saying it's safe to drive in a street car with a full cage and no helmet. If you've got those stock belts and stock seat with a full cage you WILL crack your skull open on that shit in the event of an accident. If you're in a race bucket, with harness however, you should be fine.
Who in the FUCK would have stock seats and a full cage anyway?

It IS stupid to drive a car with a full cage on the street, but ONLY if you don't have a racing bucket and are not wearing harnesses. In a "street" seat with stock belts you can move around too much in the event of an accident. With a race bucket and at least 4-point belts you are 1000% safer. And don't even try to start the whole "harnesses are not safe in a street car" bullshit.
I think you mean a 5/6 point harness. Unless it is a Schroth 4 point with ASM technology, I would be very afraid of running a 4 point harness.
I'll never wear a harness in my street car. I'm not a fan of spinal compression.
I have no problems with a SPG Pro Racer and a factory seat belt.
Street or track, if you have your harnesses mounted improperly, you will get spinal compression. Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions, and ask them questions, if you are unsure of how to properly install and set up your harnesses.

I understand that however I just don't believe in using a harness if OEM seatbelts are or were present.
However if it's something like a truck you use for offroading and roll overs are a factor than sure but only because they travel at a slow rate of speed.

Myth #1
Fuck cars in the mountains.
try to catch me in my bike. :keke:
A car mag did this test awhile ago...The bike ridden by a nationally licensed road racer got smoked by an average driver in a first gen Viper. Conclusion...4 contact patches IS better than 2 on a mountain road, even when you know where you are going..In this particular wreck instead of flipping over you'd prolly be impaled on a tree, or worse (see below)..
Myth #2
You ever hit your head on a cage?...Also, the human skull is not made out of Lincoln Logs, it's actually pretty durable...
A good read about the durability of the skull would be PHTLS...Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support......VERY NOT DURABLE, especially to high speed impacts regardless of helmet quality. Awhile back i bonked my noggin in a seriously expensive, correctly fit helmet while road racing my 250GP bike at Infineon (0900 hrs. practice)...I survived but was pretty dazed for the whole day..
I'm not anti cage in my DD nor have I ever hit my head on a caged vehicle, but I would venture it hurts without a helmet and considering that it protects my brain is a very sound reason that pretty much ALL serious santioning bodies require mandatory padding on cages AND high quality helmet use AND high quality correctly installed belts and seats....HMMMMM

I hit my head at 120 clicks, I got a welt.
Also using a Moto GP experience when talking about roll cages is retarded.
Yes, not padding a cage is stupid

My respone was about skull durability and riding fast vs. driving fast in the mountains.....
I mostly agree with your opinions (on the board) Koop but this time I'd say you were lucky to only get a welt...I've got some very extensive experience with head injuries (open and closed) and seen far worse from much less impact.
Cement hurts just as bad as metal/padding if not more.
I'm not saying you are wrong at all for caging your DD. I was just pointing out that there are disadvantages to your head if you're not smart about it..
