I was looking around trying to find info on importing a car from japan that would be a smog exempt vehicle. if the vehicle is older than 1976 and meets smog exemption in CA, what else would I need to worry about to make this go through?
The car in question

Fail. HTML code is disabled. Use the bulletin tagging.
I would assume it also needs to meet DOT safety standards. Don't quote me on that though.

Long as its older than 25 years old DOT doesn't really care if it meets crash standards. I'm not sure about smog though I don't live in california.
Yeah also good luck finding one of those in good condition under $40-50k maybe even more not sure what they're going for these days, I'd kill for one though

My buddy is living up in tokyo right now and he found this spot that has a white one and a silver one for between 22k-25k. They usually export to europe and germany though. Thats why im wondering what additional costs id be looking at besides the obvious of shipping it. Unless I can find a really mint condition 260z this is the route I wanna go.

yea, 22-25k for locals, hakusoka's are one of the cherished classics of japan and they really dont want to send them out of the country. expect a heavy markup for exporting it. oh and im expecting it to be a well made clone. that is seriously the cheapest ive ever seen, most have been $40k+

But its a shop that there business is exporting cars to canada and germany, why would they care where it goes 2,350,000 yen is 2,350,000 yen.

because its just one of those rare historic cars, they hold onto hakusoka's like australia holds onto their RB30's

In fact it may not even have the S20 in it. A lot of them have L28's in them. The ones they usually let come over here usually do. Bringing one into the U.S. is totally possible though due to its age. Marco at the SR20Store has one. His came with a L28 in it.

ya its very possible. i know a dude in costa mesa who has a 74 skyline that is legally registered in ca. he said he had very little problem getting tags for it, especially cuz its smog exempt.

Now just the question of 25k+ for the skyline or pick up a 260z and throw either an rb26 or ls1 into it and probably spend less money. Ive been looking for a clean 260z for a while but theyre few and far between.

Aren't the old school GT-Rs a tad hard to find now?

i think if you are considering a Z to swap that u should go ahead and just get a usdm one from CA instead of bothering with the rust buckets from Japan. trust me, i had a S31(equivalent of 280z in japan) and it was rusted to high holy... unless u just want the novelty factor of having a rhd car

Very true, spoken like someone who has lived in Japan before..
Good luck getting someone to sell one, much less export it. I've seen alot of shops have a hokosuka for sale however will they actually sign the title over? Fuck no. Having the car in the lot makes people stop and look.

I take it you've never done business with Japanese people before..

Don't bother trying to import anything anymore, Homeland Security has started to with the help of state dmv's to create a list of cars imported into the US that are not for new car sales.
I know a local guy here who was importing cars left and right got blacklisted, took the car to arizona court proving he made it DOT compliant and won the court case.
2 months later Homeland Security some how veto's the ruling and places his car back on a blacklist.
Blacklist = if found, crush it.

I mean I understand the argument but why put something up for sale and put a price on it if you dont have any intention of selling it? I think its referred to as the bait and switch.
Doesnt matter thanks for all the feedback.

Homeland Security is the biggest crock of horse shit I've ever fucking seen.
I'd kill anyone that tried to crush my car for no good reason... I.E. when I'm not doing anything illegal with it like street racing like a fucktard.

It also has nothing to do with being Japanese( referring to Koopa the haters comment). Fucking Americans do the same shit.

I mean if you put 25g's into a 240z or a 510 or something that thing would be a beast.

I mean for 25 grand you could build a beast of a 240z, or 510 or something.
This is a much better idea in my opinion. Less hassle and wait trying to get a car over. More time better spent scouring around Cali for a clean chassis. They are out there and can be had. Lots more money to spend on fixing the car up that would have been spent just buying it and bringing it over.
