Just thought I would share a quick deal on my car. I am building a shell up restoration S13 street/track/show car and wanted to show you all the shell before and after media blast. If any of you are thinking of doing it, I highly recommend it!! Of course you will be cleaning the car out for about 4 hours after to make sure most of the media is out, but its a sacrifice worth doing for the clean surface. Plus you know if you have any rust issues to take car before paint.
Anyways on to the pictures:

The time saved from scrubbing and removing all of the stuff by hand would take several hours and may still not be as good. Just thought you all might find this useful.

ooh, very nice. On another note, its a lot better for the environment than chemical strippers. Nice cage btw.

I had and still have a lot of interest in Media Blasting, but if you do not mind sharing, what does something like this run?
It takes FOREVER to get everything off with chemical strippers and elbow grease

The media blast only ran me $250.00. There are several in my area so price is pretty competitive. I will say they screwed up my trunk lid so I will have to get another one. So you do get what you pay for. But i didnt have doors or hood so it cut down on time.
As for prep work, all you need to do is remove all the tabs, glass, carpet and sound deadening material. The residue left over will get removed along with any surface rust, etc.... And again, you know exactly what the car looks like under the paint. If you have rust, you will find it and can eliminate it. Remember these cars are 15+ years old now so its a good idea if you can. It only took the blaster 2 hours to do exactly what you see in the pics.

Seeing a chassis like that scares the living daylights out of me.
Looks good.

Really that price is super reasonable.
I have to do more research on this then.
I have my car as a bare chassis now but there obviously still is paint on the metal and that damn sound deadner residue.....it's a lot of work

Do you have to re seal all the original places that had seam sealer from the factory?

That is a good price! I was going to look into acid dipping for my next chasis, but for that price!!!

acid baths also don't remove some materials sometimes (plastic, seam sealer, lose surface rust that would just flake off anyways, etc)
Media blasting is the way to go.

The seam sealer and the undercoating would be the primary targets. I discovered while seam welding my front end exactly how much of a fucking joy it is to grind off all the sealer. I will avoid that experience next time at all costs. Looks like media blasting is it for me.

Thats the way to restore a car from the ground up! Did the blaster remove the sound deadening or did you have to do that before? Price is great I've seen people paying $800-1000 to blast the entire car.
awesome!!

Question, don't you have to primer it right away to keep them metal from getting contaminated?

i just called the area around me : Auto Restorations by Best Blast of NJ (http://www.bestblastofnj.net/whatismediablasting.html) in New Jersey.....and gave me a quote of $1500-2000 and i have to completely gut the car... wow thats alot of dough..... ive been thinking about this eversince but im sure it will be worth it at the end.. before i even do that id rather buy a rustless car in Cali or somewhere far from northeastern cause the rust is unbelievable..

Question, don't you have to primer it right away to keep them metal from getting contaminated?
You have to primer the car in a "reasonable" time or it will flash rust. Its basically a lite layer of rust only on the surface. If you have dry weather (like in the pics) you should be fine within 48 hours. Dont blast it if its raining outside cause then you have to get it home immediately, clean it off and shoot it. Even if you get surface rust you can knock it off with a steel brush or steel wire wheel.
We primed it with PPG Self Etching primer. Thats why it has sort of a brown/green tint. This gets into all pores in the metal binding itself to protect it for years from the elements. Then we will lay down epoxy primer over the glass panels and finish with a surfacer primer before it goes to the paint booth. We dont really worry about rust here in Oklahoma but imo i want this car done right the first time as I plan on keeping it for years to come.
$1500 I would expect the entire car to be blasted. Thats interior, exterior, engine bay AND underneath! If that is what they are willing to do then that is a good price. Otherwise call someone else. I would expect each portion to run $500-600 on average. So $500 for interior, $500 for exterior and $500 for bottom. I wouldnt pay more than that.

Has anyone got any experiences with soda blasting? (use baking soda as the media)
It seems to be a big thing out here and easier to clean up afterwards but I've never talked to anyone who's had it done.

soda blasting is more popular simply because there is much less risk or warping panels as opposed to other medias and its easy to clean since itll dissolve in water. Datsun (and other classic car restorers im sure) swear by it.
