hey what up peeps! i was wondering if there are any locals around here that like to mountain bike. i've started mountain biking about 3 months ago and absolutely love it! the thing that sucks is that i only have one other friend that has a decent mountain bike, but he isn't available all that often. i dont mind riding by myself but it just makes me feel safer with more people around.
so is there anybody that is down to go mountain biking on the weekends? 7am or afternoon times? i have a car rack that fits my s14, so we can carpool depending on where your located and/or where we will be riding. i dont mind meeting up at trailheads either. i dont know, imjust looking for somebody to mountain bike with. :aw:
heres me in my 03 giant boulderSE in snow summit

this might be an old thread but worth bumping.
i go mountain biking every sunday usually around 8-10am, i have a group of about 4-5 people who come and go, but me and one friend usually go every weekend. 4-5 of us have 240's. we have hit up other trails too but i personally prefer fullerton.

I normally ride at turnbull and aliso woods; haven't ridden in a month so the next time up is going to kick my ass. hehe.
I'm hoping to have my new bike shortly so may try to hit whiting ranch soon but heard that it's still super sandy over there.

think of the sand as a way to improve your cadance and weight balance. whiting is a great place, i usually go every wednesday. im close by so if you ride whiting, let me know via pm.

the sand at whiting is just an extra workout. i liked the sand though, it got me comfortable with it.
i ride fullerton loop on sundays 8-10am we start. in the summer i prefer to go earlier but its hard after a long weekend of drinking and staying up late haha. but yeah.

I rode fullerton loop once and wasn't a big fan of all the street crossings. may need to go w/ you guys to seek out the good spots over there.

Please define "a good working mountain bike"....
stinky_180
04-29-2011, 10:32 AM
Atleast a front suspension
working front and rear brakes
working front and rear shifters and derailleurs
wheelset is true and spokes tighten
pedals properly tighten along with all hardware
and at least 1.5" wide tires
you CAN take a road bike (CX specific) on the mountain but you risk damaging your bike.
older full rigid mountain bikes work as well, just make sure the above is working properly.

Recently bought a '90 Schwinn High Plains. It's a rigid mountain bike that I got for $20 and simply bought new brakes (upgraded to v-brakes), brake levers, shifters, tires, grips, and a seat.
I want to get into riding some trails, but don't know many around my area. Plus haven't had much time.

There are places to bike everywhere. From chino to big bear. Fontana to Turnbull canyon.
Good deal on that bike man. Can't beat 20 dollars.
I have a Giant Team DH bike. It's fun, but it's a bitch to climb
I hope more people see this so we can organize a ride.

What type of ride and where were you thinking?
I don't know many people on here but if we do something out at sycamore canyon my fiance and I would more than likely be game.
There are a lot of beginner friendly areas out there, if anyone is just getting into it..
Nothing sucks more than going out and trying to keep a crazy fast pace with everyone else when your just starting..
We havent been riding in a few months tho, but if anything comes up feel free to pm me. We need to get back on the MTB's again.

I want to build another wheelset on some King's.. but the hubs alone cost about the same price as my entire wheelset now

Haha, I know I know. Anderson's isn't much of a secret though.
"TW" doesn't seem too familiar, but then again, I'm still fresh to SoCal's trails. *coming from the east coast*
It would be cool to know of more trails out here. Especially, trails that don't discriminate against Downhill bikes. What's the deal with Big Bear putting regs on the type of bike you can ride?
Lame.

So what's up with our next ride? I'm looking forward to doing something this Sunday coming up. Can't decide what trail to do though.
Or just do the loop again until we get a legit group and then start exploring around SoCal. *shrugs*
Too bad Mammoth Mountain is crazy far. We'd have a blast tearing that thing up. Has anyone hit it up?

I need some new tires. What's everyone running? I was on some Kenda Nevegals, but I'd like to try something different. I know a lot of people are running Panaracer Fire XC tires; thinking about a set of those.
I'm down to go on the next trail ride. I'll probably be really slow though since I'm out of shape. haha.

I'm running Kenda Blue Grooves on the front and Kenda Nevegals on the back, both with XC tubes, not DH tubes. There's a pretty good noticeable weight difference. =]
I'd like to run the trail they did two weeks ago, if no one is against that. It looked like a pretty sweet chill trail with some single track sections in it. Not sure exactly which route they took but the loop is still a pretty fun trail.

1st rule of fight club....
if you want a crazy trail, have you heard of a place with the initials TW?
I just saw that you were from SD. And, if by "TW", you mean the "baseball player" out in Poway, then yeah, I've heard of it. Haven't been out there since like 09' tho. We should make that the next trail ride actually. Probably not the best for hardtails tho.

Marz forks typically leak like hell out of the box, but once they're fixed they're good for a number of years.
Also, don't store a Marz fork horizontally.. keep it vertical as much as possible.
If your decent at servicing them, pull it apart when you get it and check to make sure there's the right amount of oil in it.. they're notorious for being short some oil..
If everything works as intended the 44 is a pretty sweet fork, heard a lot of good things about it.
..I just sold my bike and I miss it already =/

thanks for the info, i have never pulled a fork apart.
and i might pull my old manitou minute apart and try to fix it for fun.
i definitely dont want to pay someone $100 to service. thats money that could go to my car :D
but i will look into checking the amount of oil thanks for the tip.
i just recieved my tracking number it was shipped today so i should get it next week maybe monday or tues.

No worries, glad I could help. Where did you get it from if you don't mind me asking?
We just had our Marz rep come out and fix quite a bit of forks a few months ago and he said the seals were setup to function and rest in the vertical position. Not sure if he was BS'ing us.. but it makes sense thinking about it.. The way they ship out all of their forks forces them to sit in the vertical position while sitting in stock.
Just don't panic if you do see oil.. it's pretty typical for a Marz fork.

I currently run 2.5 Nevegals front and rear, they're perfect for socal dirt. You can try the steve peat cut on the front for more bite. The panaracer Fire XC pro FROM JAPAN (not china) are really good too. Just make sure you get the higher TPI (japan). Heard good things about Continental Mountain Kings too.

I've done Anderson's truck trail. Rode/hiked up and then back down, that was a lot of work for a really short ride back down.
Just got a Marin 29er after my walmart 29er got stolen and haven't had time to really test it out yet. I'd join up for a sunday morning ride in San Diego. I want to get into shape and get up to Noble Canyon end of summer.

Its their lower end 29er Marin Bolinas ridge, got it at REI during their 15% off sale. I like it a lot, and its a nice step up from the deception 29er I got from walmart. I still haven't even been on a real trail with big wheels yet, but the little bit I've done has impressed me.
Its hard to compare to 26" for me because I was always riding a bike that was too small for me to begin with, so just being a better size makes riding a lot more enjoyable.

Pretty decent bike. But with a BMX background, I would recommend something with more travel and a slacker head angle. Are you into jumps at all? If your not on a budget, look into all mountain hardtails or even a shorter travel free-ride bike.

Yes. None of the Trek hardtails are designed for Jumping(Save for the Trek Ticket, but its a pro-level DJ/4X frame). I worked for trek for 2 years.
I LOVE Trek bikes, however, if you want to go dirt jumping, buy a dirt jump bike.
If you just want to ride trails, then AT LEAST get a 4300. They have double walled rims, and a fork that can actually handle a little bit of ridding. Still very entry level though.
Otherwise yea, get yourself a short travel freeride bike.

You can find a downhill bike for $600. Look around on craigslist and stuff. I'm sure it'll be worth it. I've abuse the hell out of my bike and have yet to really true the wheels or have any issues with the frame. It's a pretty solid rig.

Is there a lot of climbing over there?
So TW was pretty fun. Just took the "G4" trail and ran into "Insanity" on the way down. There's a lot of fun kickers and gaps to clear. There are some really technical spots that you have to ride the trail a couple of times so you can prepare for them. If not, you'll end up launching off a 6 foot high ledge instead of just going over a hill, haha. I might go again if I get intimidate by the traffic by the traffic and not go to Fullerton.

i got my bike up and running again, re adjusted the rear deraileur, after breaking the hanger, i guess it got thrown off a bit.
went for a bike ride down the street with my little brother and i got a flat on the rear, i look and there are little goat head thorns, so i walk my bike back home change the tube, and as soon as i finish the front went flat... so then i fixed that and now im out of tubes, i went through 5 in like 2 weeks, and i have been riding this bike for almost 2 years and i never once had a flat. haha

but yeah san mateo canyon was ok. not my favorite scenery tho. but it was technical. we bypassed a single track trail because there was a rattle snake. we are assuming that if we continued past the rattle snake we would have been on the main trail instead of the overgrown trail we ended up on for a short time

Mikey McFly
08-06-2011, 04:15 PM
How much are you looking to spend. A couple of guys here have hard tails and they're not really expensive. Just search downhill, free ride, or full suspension and see what comes up. Hit up a bike shop, they might hook you up with a deal with last year's models.
stinky_180
08-06-2011, 07:35 PM
I would highly recommend getting a hard tail first as you will learn most of your skills better on one. A full suspension will only handicap you when you're starting off. Some things to keep in mind when buying a mountain bike.
Make sure you buy a bike that fits you. How tall are you? You don't need the newest technology in your new bike (V-brakes and front suspension will do). Start off easy, you don't want to scare yourself off the trails.

I just got back from riding Santiago Oaks in Orange. Trails are in perfect shape from the light rain we had last night.
With the shorter days and longer nights, it is time to bust out the bike light!

We need to get this thread kicking again. How convenient was it that over the summer we had this going and then I missed out on both rides.
I really want to get a crew out to TW one day.

from the Gates of Hell you go uphill and it takes you back to the main road. i rode up there on my hardtail last week. i had to have hit 40mph on the downhill. im averaging about 75 miles a week.
Damn! We were barely clocking at 23-25mph. But we were not very familiar with the track conditions yet since it was our first time there.

i meant i went down the paved road, skyline dr. real smooth, almost no resistance beside my beefy terrain tires. takin those banks and not braking is a hell of a rush! no way i'd hit any Xc trails without any type of suspension, i'd die....or at least walk funny after.

ha i failed to mention i was riding in residential areas because it was 10 and it had just rained. that just goes to show, you never know who you're fucking with. if that happened 4 years from now, they would have shot at an off-duty officer.

Leftside: San Diego -> North County
You'll find a ton of places! And to warn you ahead of time, TW (Ted Williams) is pretty advanced.
Anyone interested in riding this Sunday? I was thinking the Fullerton Loop since its inbetween LA and SD. Let me know, hopefully it doesn't rain hard this weekend.

I have done lake Hodges once. Start at the hernandez hideaway and I made it to the 15 before I was tired. If guys are going to do that again I wouldn't mind tagging along. I need to find some more riding buddies.
Send me a PM if you guys go.

Went up there on the day they found the body parts. We were wondering why there were cops, paramedics and park ranger everywhere. Had no idea what was going on then saw it on the news that night. I wouldve kick the head down the hill and say "ehh its hollywood, its a movie prop" if i were to stumble upon the head. Lol

Anderson's Truck trail is south of you out by Alpine and TW is closer to you. I'm a downhill rider though and those are downhill tracks. Well, TW is more DH than Anderson's. You can do Anderson on a XC, it would be rough on a hardtail.

Definitely a great starter bike! Just upgrade it as you gain more skill. Where do you ride?
