is it coming straight from the block? the only thing i could think of is your power steering. i got a whine cuz i got low on power steering fluid. then i let it go on long enough that i think i burnt out a bearing or something in the power steering motor, so even if i do have fluid it still makes the whine noise. . if anyone can tell me how to fix this cheap please tell me heheh its sorta embarassing

better hope it isnt a bearing

its prolly the throwout bearing or the pilot bearing in the tranny not the block.

If its like a honda just. pull the pan, then splash shild, then caps and rod ends. I have to do it to one tomorrow as it has a slight knock

Yea. It's not like a honda. The oil pan in a 240sx is a pain in the ass to drop out. You need to unbolt the motor mounts, tranny mounts, jack up the engine, and wiggle out the pan. It sucks.

I don't hear any knock, but it's now progressed into an earsplitting whine....

guess I have to admit defeat and bring 'er in to a shop....

I think i have the same exact problem! It has somehting to do with the power steering. Even when I turn the wheels when the car is stopped (car is running), it whines a little.

You could have a leak somewhere in your intake manifold. Maybe where the manifold and head meet the gasket is damaged.

A dollar says you are low on power steering fluid. Remember, use ATF, not PS fluid for power steering.

Does the noise go away if you push in the clutch/let out of the clutch? If not, it probably isn't the pilot bushing or throwout bearing.

Thanks to everyone who posted,

turned out to be the idler pulley bearing and the alternator bearings;

think i'll change to a smaller drive pulley dia to hopefully avoid this...
