misnomer

I just noticed this on the last leg of my drive home. When I give the car gas with the clutch in, I can feel and hear a grumbling noise, more noticible than ever before. The sound is related to the motor revving. I suspect a transmission issue. The sound of the gear swirling is a bit louder than usual. I'm going to take it tomorrow to replace the tranny and dif fluids (I hope), tried before the trip, but couldn't get the ****ing drain plug out (jack, breaker bar, four foot lever, no budgie!)! Any other ideas? Particularly why it would be related to the clutch?
The clutch operation itself is normal, car runs OK otherwise. Issue is noticible whether the car is warm or cold.
EDIT:
The main thing that's got me confused is the sound seems to come from directly in front of the driver seat, a bit farther away (IE header area), but I can feel it in my clutch foot.
