i actually bought the 20oz gravity feed gun.. *i wasnt thinking at the time that i should have got the hlvp one*.. my initial thought was ill use it to primer my car, then borrow my friend's snap on gun to do the paint.. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47016

Should i take this one back and get teh hlvp one? or should this gravity gun be enough for primer and bullshit around the house? freaking hf is a long drive from where im at.

You could take it and make it into a fine smoking device, if it hasnt been used before.

i always thought it was hvlp... but anywho... use it or get a finex sharpe gun... great for the 80-100 buck price and sprays way more even than h.f. gun... thick primer will clog that gun... for primer get a siphon feen gun..(looks like cup under the gun)

maybe ill jus use it to practice.. shoot up some spare fenders ... id use a better higher quality gun for paint anyways
money is really tight right now for me so thats why i thought maybe i should go back and get the other one

Lows and homedepot have better guns for about the same price. I would go that way, and get a HVLP, its just better. From my experience the cheap guns work OK if you keep them clean. They wont last or spray like a SATA or 3M but they are 100X better than spray cans.

Kind of a side note, but what are you planning on using to power the gun?

IIIXziuR
09-20-2008, 09:18 AM
It probably wouldn't be too bad to just lay primer and get some over all practice with.
I used a similar gun when I shot paint in the past and it does get the job done.
Obviously not as good as the $400+ HVLP Guns on the market

What kind/power compressor will you be using man?

i had a 120v 21 gal harbor frieght air compressor i bought 2 years ago which died like 6 months after use *i took it apart, one of the capacitors that triggers the motor to stop had melted, in which i replaced it and the new one exploded*.. i sat on it for a long time and figured id try to replace it, in which i was able to just go to harborfrieght and I told em i only had it for 6months and they let me exchange it for a new one by buying the $29 extended warranty.. so i got a new one with 2 years warranty.

I had this one Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93271)
now i got this one Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=94667)

Now i need to go get my craftsman impact gun back from a friend who i let borrow it *he had to do some minor work on his s14 a few months ago*, i hope his ass oiled my gun when using it lol

I dont wrench on cars like i used to, but it would be nice to have all my air tools back.. i feel like organizing my tool box now, alot of tools are all over teh place lol

the gun is ok for practicing. What tip size isthe gun? You can use it once for primer then just get a better one for paint/clear. I like devilbliss. Great guns and are pretty economical for the performace. Althoughm nothing beats sata. I'd get a gun made in the us since they are cheaper to source parts and to service unless your local paint store services them like mine. Id be carefull with those harbor frieght guns though, make sure the nylon cup is real tight. They tend to leak easily and if you dont clean them good afterwards they wil leaks like crazy. If u can find the tip and cap for the hvlp gun from harbor frieght then you can swap it out and get the same thing. As for your compressor, you have right now.... it would barely keep up with the gun you have. Id buy a bigger tank to store more air or buy 220 5hp copressor 30-60 gallon with 150-175 max ps- pressure. Most will put out at least [email protected] where you paint gun runs around or get a gas powered compressor. They are loud and hard to maintence but are work horses. Id also think about your da sanders those thing can eat up upto 17 [email protected] psi! talk about burning up a motor easily.

Dude you should look on eaby for deals. PPl sell used guns all the time but its a gamble becuase you never know if they were maintained right. I bought a great devilbliss gun for 30 bucks shipped just need a lid. Its my primer gun.

I got a finex paint gun from a local paint shop. Its not the greatest paint gun out there but it does the job. The picture below is a friends car we painted using a finex gun. It does have a few small paint runs on the driver side fender and some bugs flew in the clear coat but thats user error and I cant control bugs movements, but overall the finex paint gun did its job and id buy one again if something happened to mine.

you bought the finexfx3000 with a 1.4 tip frome arnes paint didnt you norcal-240? PLus, is that the car ur buddy wanted me to paint with the mazda color? I was looking at that gun.. i like the graco more since with was lighter and i liked the trigger system and feel. Looks good!
btw how much did u pay to paint it??? i bnet arnes over charged... i could have gotten it for you for about 200 at where i go. paint/clear/ activators and reducer.

note:posdrifting... thick primer wont clog up a gun if u chose right tip size or crank up the pressure but that would wear out the gun faster. 1.8-2.2 tip is ideal for high build primer surfacers, polyester filler primer, latex or if your spray zolatone.. now that shit is hard to clean out your gun.

All a spray gun really needs to do is atomize the paint. But Sata custum fits the needle and cap for each and every gun.If you damage a cap you can only order the needle and cap together, but that why they cost 500-1000$.
-For the side note on the compressor, all compressor tanks are made by Devilbiss. The only difference is the motors. For painting daul stage is the best. Spray guns, especally HVLP guns use a lot more air than standard air tools

I paint for a living for honda of america, and nothing is going to beat a sata's performance comparted to a cheap gun, your best bet is just save up and get a better compressor for a hplv gun try getting a gas powered 2 stage set up, I am using a honda powered 8hp 2 stage set up that is around 2500 bucks and well worth it.

That harbor freight gun will lay primer...just not very even. You'll be wet sanding for a while.

Didn't really bother me though, I'm that idiot that enjoys prep/body work.

One use and that gun will be trash though. We actually used that exact HF gun to spray my friends black 13, and Forrest went through I think 4 guns total? The paint came out pretty good considering it was the middle of winter and they were HF guns, but they kept clogging up and killing themselves.

I would just get a sata or something...and a good compressor. For the price that was paid for all those HF guns, one dope, reliable gun could have been bought. You can also check out certain places that rent out paint booths, they'll have dope compressors you can use to paint with.

if i paint my car, im painting pieces individually... all front end and kit off.. i dont have a good place to spray but i figure i can prop up the pieces on horse tables and spray em.. then the only physical part of the car will be the cabin/rear quarter...

Ill be using a different gun for the paint

We use that exact HF gun to paint frames of trucks/trailers with flat black single stage. Works good for that.

With the right practice I don't forsee it being a bad primer gun, but to each his own. For actual painting of the trucks we have some Binks equipment that works ok.

I just bought the 47016 spray gun from Harbor Freight for $10. I used it today to paint a shed with latex paint, and it worked great.

Cleanup was a snap.

Specifications: 1.4mm nozzle, rated 6CFM @ 50PSI. (As of 11/28, HF web site identifies this as a 1.5mm nozzle, although this unit has a 1.4mm nozzle.)

Notes so far --
* Manual is very poor. No information on reducers/viscosity.
* Uses lots of air, be sure the target compressor can keep up.

i go to a place up in woodland. I get customer discounts. I can usally get a gallon of clear/acti, half a gallon of basew/ activator, and i use a generic reducer front H.E.A.T. industries. Works great with nason and cost about 60% less for the reducer and all for like 210-250.00. Depending on the color.
I also have an account with them becuase i go alot. They have an awsome machine for color matching. One of the best i ever seen. They matched a color that wasnt even out in production or in its database.(cheap paint from china).

Same here. For $15.99, no need to clean. Shoot and toss when done.
Ive used this for primers and for single-stage flatz with pretty good results.

that cheapo gun would be fine to primer with.
to paint make sure you use quality materials and a good Space and gun. paint is something you don't want to do twice.

I got this one on sale for $15 and was happy with the results of my single stage acrylic paint job. It worked fine when I shot some clear on it as well. Layered on the paint then took a good bit back off. I'm sure if you were a pro then the goal would be to do it right out of the box to where you didn't spend hours detailing it out but it worked fine.
