tossing around between blacktop and redtop for my s13. Any power differences? what i found said no. but then why the higher price? newer engine maybe. i read something about the heat sink fins nico had a pretty good write up about it but heard and read quite a few different things...anybody have experience with both?

The blacktop is a newer engine. Came on the later s13's.
I've had good experiences with both. Personally, id rather have a blacktop.

Blacktop is from a new s13 I think 95-98 and redtop are from 91-94 not 100% sure. then notch top are from s14s.

OMG! i think you guys def need to use the search.
there are black top s13 from the 95 up 180sx.
red top is the years before.
easiest way to tell is the damn valve cover.
get the black top its a little newer.
theres a few threads here about these motors. pros and cons . im too lazy to look.
both motors stock internals are good for 400. i guess price is where you can make your decision.

Exactly. Red and black tops are both s13.
Now the s14 SR only comes black.

You are all correct. One person is talking about the US and the other is talking about JDM. You're all right.
ahaha well hes talking about an SR so im assuming hes talking about JDM right? lol :)

I'm all about semantics, but I'm going to murder a baby seal if you all don't stop. You're just confusing the poor OP.

ok so there are supposedly 2 black tops but one is really a notch top that came in the s14 and would just be a little bit harder to put into my s13 but the red and black top are both s13 compatible if you can turn a wrench and see through a chain link fence. So other than heat ribs on the head or whatever they are called...not a big difference?...miles going unstated.

S13 SR swap into a USDM S13 is simple wiring wise, plus having a guide online is great. The only thing that may throw a wrench into it is when/if you end up with a new 180sx Type-X engine. It has a slight difference in wiring pin out. But other than the heat fins and difference in o2 sensor, blacktop and redtop are the same engine.
There isnt really any pros and cons advantage with either engine. Sure 180sx blacktops are newer but that dont really mean much when you think about it this way. How many 180sx do you think in Japan arent abused/drifted to hell??? I'd rather try to pick up an automatic SR...
