Just thought id post it here.

I got pulled over by one of those white CHP cars without the lights on top for speeding (going 80, 5 miles faster than everyone else) and having a loud exhaust (HKS Hi Power Cat Back). I saw the CHP comming up behind me and by then i was going 75 like everybody else but he had already made his mind up to pull me over. I pulled off the freeway (5south, State College exit) and the first thing he said was that my exhaust was too loud and if i race. I told him i dont of course. He said he'd have to check under my hood for modifications and told me to open my hood and get out of the car, which i did.
I have a blacktop SR with front mount intercooler pipings and he said that he'd have to give me a state ref ticket for having modifications. He asked me if i knew what that was, then without letting me asnwer told me with mods like that (using his flashlight as a pointer to my engine) i should know or have heard about it. He told me to go sit in my car and after a good 20 minutes he came back and asked me to step out of the car again. He had me go stand by his hood and had me sign my ticket and asked me if i understood why i was getting a ticket and if i had any questions. i told him i didnt and he told me he would allow me only to drive back home and not let me go on my way because of my modifications until i see the state ref. That was it.
My friend got one last month and we found out that the State Refs were closed due to Arnolds budget cuts with DMV and all. So we asked around and heard people were allowed to pay a fine at court after pleading guilty and being done with it. My friends going to court Wed. for it so ill know more then.

So.. 2 choices..
1. Wait for the State Ref's to re-open
2. Pay the fine.

What crappy choices.

Dude, that really blows. I guess one of the few things that we Tennesseans have going for us is the ability to ride around with open DPs and wastegates, with no more than a blank stare from cops...hehehe. Oh, that and no emissions in some areas.

I hope you get everything cleared up man.

i'm pretty sure you can always plead guilty and pay the fine. the problem being the priors will add up after a while and they will keep increasing the fine, if not just take your car!

I believe orangewood is close from state college im really bad with my streets but ya i also dealt with the same thing he only gave me speeeding ticket and said it could of been worst by giving me a ref tick cause of my exhaust cause he said he heard me from a long distance cause of my exhaust full 3 inch megan to 3.5 in megan muff + no cat. I'd say go ahead and pay the fine. But wow man that speeding ticket is gonna cost ya! Im actually going to pay mine tomorrow 363$

They can take your car for that shit? Man i'm sick and tired of this. I'm going to cover all my front mount intercooler piping with stock civic and 240sx piping. And cut a hole in a stock intake box for my BOV. They will never know.

Sorry to hear about your stiuation. Would switching back to the SMIC with the stock piping keep it on the low pro with these cops?

I actually don't think he can legally enforce the whole "you are only allowed to drive your car home and park it untill you get the ref ticket cleared up" thing. Cops love to spew out bullshit like that. But seriously, WTF were you doing going 80mph in a SR powered 240 with a loud exhaust? You might as well have had a neon fucking sign above your car saying "pull me over and give me a ref ticket"!!!

cops will give u a ref ticket for any thing and just figure that if they are wrong, the person can go to the ref and get it corrected/writen off..

That really sucks because some of us spend our hard earned money and passion on modding our cars, and that happen to be our only ride.. and to have a cop tell you to leave it at home or ill impound it next time, is BS man!!!

To the best of my knowledge that constitutes an illegal seizure of property. A ref ticket is nothing but a fix-it ticket. It is an expensive, pain in the ass fix-it ticket but nothing more.

.....then he mentioned he was writing out my tickets so that if I get pulled over and my car isn't fixed, regardless of it being inspected by the ref, that it would be impounded and I would be taken to jail.

thats what cc4usmc was told

thats what cc4usmc was told

yep. got my manifold swapped over. i'm hesitating with the intake because i think its carb legal.. but i can't verify it yet. since i'm jobless i'll probably just put the stock intake on anyhow.

you didn't bargain with him? i would bargain for the speed ticket over a ref ticket, i would say well, the ref stations are closed do to a budget deficit, why not give me the ticket, then do trial by declaration.

im telling you, i was only going 5 miles faster than everyone else. i think what f-ed me up was, riding in the carpool lane. i think the wall makes my exhaust sound louder than it is. its actually not THAT loud.

if you got some super donk ass looking 240 that gains attention while driving cops are paying attention to you. If you got some super low ass car with an obvious exhaust sticking 3 inches out from your rear bumper a cop pays attention.

People want to do these dope mods to their cars and have a bazillion stickers on them and shit hanging off the rear tow hooks.

cops look for that shit.

I have yet to be pulled over or even given a second look by a cop in my 240, and I drive around without a front end. And a huge exhaust leak, shit sounds like a 3 rotor (because it's only running on 3 cylinders) LOL and no cops have made a fuss about it. Much less do they even know what kind of car it is.
