View Full Version : Charcoal Canister, and more

A few things to ask here. I have been told I don't need it (it's just for smog stuff, and I have NOTHING else for smog). Charcoal canister.
At the bottom I think there is some sort of fuel line? What do I do with all the vacuum lines then if I don't need the charcoal canister? From what I remember (stock blacktop s13 SR20DET), the vacuum lines are running from the throttle body (or around it) to the canister. Do I just leave the hoses off? Or cap the things or what.
Also my SR has recently loss a lot of power. It ran a little low on oil, I noticed when I changed the oil the other day. Only thing I could think of is spark plugs and fuel pump. I am going to replace both soon, I have not replaced either from when I swapped the motor about 3,000 miles ago(SOHC->SR swap). Could that be causing my engine to loose power all of a sudden, like the fuel pump maybe going out? It bogs somtimes too...which I'm guessing has to do with the timing.
The BOV (Apexi Dual Chamber) isn't blowing off anymore either. My boost guage is still reading all the normal vacuum and boost though. I'm very confused at all my problems I'm having with my car, I miss having my car running normal!

Sounds like you have too many problems at once.
Bogging is probably fuel related.
Check to make sure the BOV isn't stuck shut..........sometimes the diaphragms get stuck
Turbo car, you will burn SOME oil (shouldn't be a ridiculous amount though)

I don't understand your question. What do you want to know?
I recommend keeping the evaporative charcoal canister for visual inspection purposes.
The charcoal canister 4 hoses:
1) fuel tank vent line - this line should be plumbed to the charcoal canister or vent to atmosphere if no canister is used. DO NOT CAP THIS LINE.
2) drain hose - from bottom of canister into frame rail
3) manifold vacuum - clearly labeled on the canister itself. goes from the EGR/charcoal canister control valve. ECU feeds a signal to the valve, and the valve feeds vacuum to the canister. When vacuum is high, the canister releases gas fumes. This port needs to see timed vacuum, i.e. vacuum present under throttle.
4) purge line - goes to intake for combustion when vacuum is present on the vacuum port of the canister
As said above, I recommend running the canister to reduce gas fumes and for visual inspection.
The proper way to remove the canister would be to vent the gas tank vent line to atmosphere. Any other vacuum line needs to be traced back to the source on the intake and capped.

Can be any number of problems. We don't know. You need a good SR mechanic to diagnose your problems and perhaps do a tuneup.
The BOV (Apexi Dual Chamber) isn't blowing off anymore either. My boost guage is still reading all the normal vacuum and boost though.
How do you know if the BOV isn't blowing off?
Check the vacuum hose from the BOV to the throttle body. Search online for pix and description of the BOV vacuum nipple for the SR.
Then check the spring tension on the BOV and adjust. Search online for instructions on how to adjust a BOV.

Thank you, I will go ahead and clear some things up.
I wanted to know do I need the charcoal canister or not? and if I don't need it what should I do with all the lines connecting to it. Sorry I wasen't exactly clear on that question. I don't need to worry about passing visual or anything like that. It looks like 'g6civcx' answered pretty much most of that.
For the loss of power I was asking if the fuel pump and/or spark plugs could cause somthing like that, and if that is a reliable source to my problem?
As for the BOV not blowing off, it's compression surging. It is not adjusted to compression surge, before it was working just fine, but recently it just started compression surging.
