hey guys, i may be trading my car for a RB25 powered s13. One of the issues that is keeping me on the fence is that the gauge cluster does not work, except for turn signals. He has the skyline cluster, but i would much perfer to keep the s13 one for mph. Is this a difficult fix? anyone have any insight here? Thanks

define "gauge cluster does not work"

cuz if it doesn't work at all then he wired something wrong....probably not too hard of a fix. But if the gauges are just innaccurate then that's to be expected.

speedo signal from RB is KMH, vs MPH. So it should be off by close to a factor of 2. (mine reads almost exactly half of what it should). I think LS automotive makes a speedo that will work

as for tach....6 cyl output vs 4 cyl tach causes it to read 1.5x higher. CarlH on nico will modify ur DOHC tach to work perfectly with the RB signal for like $50. That's what i'm gonna do when i have more money.

hope that helps

nevermind, i found out.

how much is their tach fix? I bet its more than $50......talk to carlh...trust me

and oh yea!!!! Get the VSS (speed sensor for the tranny) from a Z32

fits into the RB tranny and gives an output signal in mph. boom!

but this is all assuming that the stock cluster is wired correctly. It does work right? just not accurately?

Its 100, plus 50 charge fee. The speedo fix is the 180mph one. So you said the 300zx speed sensor on the rb25 will work for the 240sx cluster?

Z32 TT or NA?

this was brought up in a nother thread recently and S14DB informed me that the Z32 sensor with NOT fix your speedo reading

he said the 2 sensors are identical and the cluster must be modified

is that true? anyone try using the z32 sensor yet?

I have used the NA Z32 Speed Sensor in a Car and it worked no problem.

Also have used the Dakota Digital converter and that worked without a problem aswell.

EDIT: misread, NA z32. Thanks!

What year and model? (NA or TT)

he said NA, and any Z32 should be the save (VG30DE)

that's interesting to hear it worded perfectly for you, since i've heard different things from different people. I guess the only way is to get one and find out!

thanks for the info though. When using the Dakota Digital, did you notice any lag time in the tach? I've heard it has a slight delay in converting the signal

oops, I got so excited, I misread. lol Thanks.

Zerolift Autolab: Thanks!

As far as the tach: I don't think I'll find anything cheaper than the $45 of shipping it to Carl H and having him calibrate it.

The VSS doesn't give signal in MPH or KM/H. The signal is the same for all units, if you look at a JDM gauge vs. a US you'll see the points match up, the only difference would be an auto unit vs. a manual. There is no such thing as a 'JDM' or 'KM/H' speed sensor.

yea....that's what S14DB told me.....

so you're saying my USDM cluster is reading KPH on the MPH scale? I still don't understand it completely....because the way you're making it sound it should show MPH on my cluster, and KPH on a JDM cluster without having to calibrate anything

So how do you explain people using Z32 VSS and having it work for MPH?

Good Q..........

so let me get this straight. basically my 2 options are:

1. get speedo recalibrated

2. Find speedo gauge face from (canada, uk, jp, anything with KPH as a primary scale, and MPH as the secondary) and switch with my MPH face

right?

Those were my original plans...until I saw a thread of hope with dealing with the Z32 sensor. :(

Yes. The VSS is the exact same unit (at least for the Schassis) in all markets. Swapping a JDM cluster into your car does not require any calibration, not does using a sensor from a clip sourced outside the US.
As far the RB25/Z32 debate, I'm almost 100% positive it's the same too. It makes no sense that Nissan would build different sensors for different markets, and guys running JDM clusters in Z32s don't have to calibrate or swap anything to make them read correctly.

So you're saying the z32 sensor should be accurate on a 180sx cluster? I've seen where people get a 180sx cluster and adjust the potentiometer (or whatever it's called) and claim that it works. I'm confused.

I don't understand why places like LS auto charge $110 for the "calibration" of the speedometer and the tachometer.
