View Full Version : How to shave - fill holes on JDM Kouki front bumper? Poly bumper filler?

So im getting my car ready for paint but want to shave the front license plate holder on the JDM bumper.

I figure I will shave the square plate part down with an electric sander and somehow fill the two rectangular holes but im not sure what to use to fill them since the bumper is OEM.

How would I fill the holes to make this work?

I asked one guy who did it and all he said was "use bondo"

Im pretty sure bondo wont work.

I also have a JDM rear bumper I need filled because of some scratches but im not sure what body filler people use on the OEM material. I want something with some flex so it will not crack.

I currently have the rage gold body filler but I was planning on using that for the body panels.

So lemme know what you guys would recommend.

Thanks

fiberglass filler would prob have a better chance of sticking to the poly (OEM) bumper as compared to plastic (bondo)

no short strand fiberglass filler. tiger/kitten hair.

look into a company called U-Pol... they carry a ton of different fillers for whatever you could need. A lot of pro's use their products and I've used their fiberall before with good results.

check a thread on poly uratane repair. I posted a great vid on how to do it with regualr everoat exposy resisn and a video that shows how to do it properly but just to save u time ill post it here again.
Evercoat (http://www.evercoat.com/training.aspx)
its the very bottom one but watch ever video so u can get an idea on proper body work techniques and how to repair stuff. Oh yeah, evercoat is the shit! u pol is good too but not as good as evercoat.

When you sand the license plate provision off make sure to come back and tell us you now have a large rectangular hole in your bumper.

How do you think this guy did it then?

Maybe just fill the square part flat even though it will look kinda funny?

fiberglass it from the inside, then sand the holder off, add a little fiberglass from the outside and sand it smooth

Bondo is wrong and so is fiberglass. OEM bumpers are very greasy and bondo and fiberglass wont stick! DONT USE ANY SOLVENTS ON IT!!! They will impregnate it. You can use a plastic welder and fill the holes that way. OR you can get a plastic adhesives from an auto body store and that stuff works like body filler but IT WILL STICK! You just sand the holes intp a V shape so the fill area is larger (die grinder works) the mix the two part adhesive until smooth and apply like body filler. Usually plastic adhesive cure faster than regular body filler then sand and seal.D 3M makes a great product- dupont has it too but i havnt used it.

^^^ i agree with u man. i posted a link to how to do it from evercoats training vids..... a plastic cleaner would work to get the grease and crap off... sigh i guess no one looked at it. All your answers are right there.

Thank you!

I will try this rubber welding or adhesive method. I was worried about fiberglass not sticking.

What about a filler or something to smooth it out?

The two part adhesive is the filler. You use a net or peice of plastic on the back side with the adhesive, then on the front just fill the holes a little high. After its dry sand and finish out just like body filler"bondo".Body filler is not flexible enough to be used on platic like a bumper. And if you plan on painting it use a Flex additive with you paint...

It's not that hard, just takes time.

*Cut lic plate retangle out.
*Cut down the rectangle to fit flush.
*Apply fiberglass mesh or mat with resin to the back of the bumper.
*Allow 24 hours to cure.
*Apply fiberglass mesh or mat with resin to the front to fill in all holes.
*Allow 24 hours to dry.
*Sand down face of bumper until more or less smooth.
*Apply body filler for imperfections.
*Apply primer
*Block sand with 10"-14" block.

It's important that you wait 24 hours between fiberglass coats (as recommended on label) If not the fiberglass resin will continue to shift as it hits 200 degrees.

I would offer to help, but you're in AZ.

Here's some pix.

I have not got around to it yet.... stuff on my car keeps breaking.

The appointment for paint is on saturday. I will have an update with pics after paint.

I will more than likely go the fiberglass route unless someone at the paint supply can offer something better.

dang that came out pretty good.

so you cut out the rectangle and plastic welded What in? the whole area? and then smoothed it over with kitty hair? Dont you need something more substantial tofill the gap?

I'm just trying to figure out where to get a piece of flat plastic for that.

I was going to use plastic adhesive to keep it secured. Should be fine with the kitty hair

Those saying plastic weld are most correct.

But. I filled my license plate holes with metal filler, then bondo'd over top. It's quite good, hasn't cracked or showed any signs of stress, despite the bumper flopping around, getting twisted, and getting pushed in by parking curbs.
