Hey guys! A few months ago I took my car in to get an emissions test and I failed with flying colours. I was something like 5 times over the limit. My car is a 91 s13 with 159000 km's on it. I had a k&N pop charger on there with a custom intake pipe and just a bolt on exhaust (I need more money) at the time of taking the test. My cat seems to be in good working order and I got new spark plugs and wires recently. One thing I have noticed is that there is a bit of greyish smoke coming out of the exhaust and the ehxaust tips themselves are sooty. I think this has something to do with it but I'm not sure. I have one month to figure out the problem or I cant insure my car. Does anybody have any ideas on what the problem could be???

Get a new CAT. They're like $150, IIRC.

You can go to any auto store and find fuel additives that gaurantee that you will pass. Like Everclear
Where I live I don't have emmissions regulations HAHA!! No smog test for me.. Ahh I love that!

Ill try that everclear ****. A buddy also told me that revving my engine at around 2000 will heat up my cat, helping me pass. He said that or go for a highway run. Is this true?

Just have your car at normal operating temp when you test. The cat should be a normal op temp then. Cats use heat to burn the gases that emmissions testers look for. The hotter the cat, the less emmission. You don't want to total fry the cat though.
Also, in engines like the Jeep 4.0L the normal water temp is 210degrees, this means a hotter combustion process to help burn more emmissions.
This is one of the few cases were heat in your engine actually helps you.
