So I walked out to my car today and there was one of those annoying flyers they put on your car. And I grabbed it ready to throw away, but the paper had a picture of a tow truck on it and it caught my eye so I read it.
Here is what it says...
BUY JUNK CARS
50.00 to 800.00 Cash Now
We buy junk cars, any year, any model or any condition. Running or not, no title, no keys = No Problem!
$$PAID IN CASH ON SITE AND SAME DAY PICK UP$$
Compramos cualiquier carro en cualquier condicion, chocados, descompuestos, viejos, con o sin papeles y recibe dinero hoy mismo
SERVICIO EXPRESS - 24 HORAS
COMPRO CARROS PARA JUNK
ERNESTO TOWING (323) 552-1436
Now what worries me is at the time my car was parked on the street and I had this ad placed on it and they will tow cars with basically no proof that you even own the car, but will still get money for it. And there is nothing saying anything about defining what a "junk" car is. And the 24 hour part also really scares me and it's not even written in english. So they can just come get your car at 2-3 am and just drive away with it as if they had permission from the "owner"?

ive seen ads like that b4 never really though about it till now...they probably run the vin or something after they get the car

Oh, I will take a pic of the ad soon if you guys want to see it and I also called the number to try to see if they would take a car with no proof of ownership but I just got a voicemail that was in spanish and just ended up hanging up. The ring also sounded like a Verison ring back tone with the standard classical music. This whole thing sounds very sketchy and don't feel comfortable leaving my car outside when needed be anymore.

That wouldn't make much sense to me. They already took the car and running the vin after the fact would still mean they technically stole it.

I want to neg rep you so bad right now. It's this kind of reason why I'm worried.

im sure they run it somehow and if not they are probley charging people to get them out of their lot
no title probably means they'll take a bill of sale

when i picked up my coupe, it was just a shell and we had to push it out of my buddys back yard
we called Triple A and told them to tow my friends car, described it and told them the plate number
the plate was in the trunk and never looked at by the truck driver
this car is still registered to a man that i dont even know
there is no history of this car being at this address, or in any of our names
the truck driver thought it looked funny because it had pink graffiti and no fenders
we got it towed to my house for free
that car could have been anybodys car, i have the power (through my friends AAA to tow your car to my house (that he doesn't even know is my house)

I've had one of those morons come knocking on my door. I actually did have a beater hyundai (had no title, I bought it 17 years old for 5 speed fun) that everyone wanted me to get rid of. I told them $400 so the next day they come with the truck, get it ready to be towed and hand me $325 saying there's a $75 tow fee. I told them no because it was so obvious they were just a bunch of junkies and not an actual towing company. So they tried to argue with me for $325 because they already had it attached and ready to be towed. The police station is down the street from me and I told me I'll call the police if they don't take my beater baby off their tow truck. He handed me $75 more and left.
When I asked why they wanted it so bad they told me they needed it as a parts car because they happen to have a 87 hyundai elentra that they are building up as a track car. I didn't believe them because there wasn't a single useful part on that piece of crap. My mom was really glad to see it out of the driveway though hah.

Man this is pretty scary! I'm in SoCal! Hopefully i don't come out from work one of these days and my baby is gone! D:
Pretty shady if you ask me!
is your car really messed up? to where he might have thought it was a junk car?

they are SUPPOSED to get the title from you when they come to pick up the car, but most likely they wont.

No I would say my car is in good condition and has some rare parts I would not want to lose.

I do not see how my car would be considered "junk"

hm the thing is if the car has no papers they arent going to give the person good money for it i had one of these guys take my z when i crashed it sad day... but back to the point the chances of some random person wanting to come up on some cash for your car is slim... because its not worth the 4 plus years in jail for auto theft

local junk yards require valid I.D. that is state issued, then take the VIN from the car and keep it on file in case the car is reported stolen, in the case of a friend of mine his blazer was stolen and when he reported it, then they caught the guy but because my friend had bought the car for less than $500 ( a gift from a family member) now my friend is out a car and the money he could've sold it for too! To top it off the guy wasn't charged with grand theft auto because the car wasn't worth that much.

call the local PD...let them know. I had some guys come to my parents house wanting to buy our "junk" cars. Called the PD, they said they can't just be doing that shit. Good luck, hide the car or bring it over to me. ;)

Why can't they do that if its a legit company just trying to make extra cash and clean up the comunity??
People come up and ask if stuff is for sale in my yard all the time I don't run and call the PD???

Can you let my junk car hang out with all your junk cars, and have a junk car party? :dead: J/P
The big scrap companies here in Bama are very strict about taking cars. You have to have all your paperwork at a legit scrap yard.

I have junked shells with no title. They don't look at it, except for where to attach the winch. Just call up an ad from craigslist, and I have $200 and no more shell to be an eyesore.
It does make me wonder... they will even take them with no wheels/suspension...

If it was a legit company trying to clean up the community they would likely be working with the police. Pick-'n-Pull has what they call "amnesty day" where you can bring in a car with no title, to get eyesore cars off the street, but the police department has officers working there that day that make sure that shit is legit. I wouldnt trust these jokers that left the flier, you should let the police know about this.

Last time I had to get rid of a junk shell, I had to give it to them to convince them to take it away. This town sucks.
When they arrived in their flatbed they pulled up in front of my mom's '86 Z. My thought was "Asshole...the nice Z is not your free car. Come around back and pick up your wrecked S13." Of course one of them was a tweaker who went around checking out our property and getting friendly with the dogs like he was gonna come back and steal something.

I know someone who actually has a tow truck and would offer nominal fees to remove "junk" cars from peoples' yards for them and he ALWAYS got a title and had it notarized. He would take them to recycling and get WAAAAY more out of them than he was paying, or he would fix and flip the. Recycling ALWAYS took identification and title information, as well as information on the tow truck from them... Then his jackass partner got greedy and just started towing inop cars out of yards without permission and taking them to the same place. When the owners reported the cars missing, my friend, the titled owner of the truck, was charged with like 8 felonies in addition to the one or 2 he already had on him...
His "partner," who already had a couple related to his failed attempt to run a used car lot before eventually went down for it when the guy from recycling went into court and cleared my friend's name with the basic "hell, I gave THAT guy the money, not this one" on record... His "partner" would then have the holy fucking SHIT beaten out of him and can't show his face in several places for fear of more asswhoopings.

because if your car was on the street, i could say its mine. Have them tow it, make a few hundred and then you would have no car.

The city has their own Vehicle Abandonment Police that go around making sure eye sores and junk cars are out of public site.
They have their own tow companies they contract out to deal with that stuff.
The place that contacted you is probably just going around.
I highly doubt they singled you out and plan on taking your car.
For them to take a car they need a bill of sale and what not.
So as long as your car is registered and current, you have nothing to worry about.
Thinking tow companies are out for your cars...

Your friend got fucked over by everybody in that situation. The amount you pay for something and its value are two very separate numbers.
