View Full Version : 260z Ultimate street car build
blu808
09-10-2008, 09:45 PM
We are in the process of fully building a 260z for street use. The goal of this project is to end up with a badass 260z that can handle anything from a cross country road trip, to the local track days, and auto x events. We will be doing a full show quality restoration, Complete chassis basting, Complete body work, Rb25det engine, Custom CNC aluminum suspension control arms, 5 lug, willwoods, Rb25det, interior, and everything in between.
This is the first series of pictures showing the take down process. Hope you guys stay tuned.

Sweet overspray on EVERYTHING!
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/9-10-08015.jpg
We gutted the interior and to our surprise there was no rust anywhere.
Sweet!

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g204/turboskeet/9-10-08017.jpg
Then Kyle removed all the brackets, and marked all the holes in the engine bay that will be welded over.
We are shaving the engine bay for a cleaner look.

berz: Thanks man!
Roidmonkey: Yup yup
Z-spool: We are located in San Jose area california. Feel free to come by the shop if you are in the area.
GEARZ: It will be a clean RB build. I say clean because it is not going to be a race car, it will be reliable, with a good amount of power, and focused on street driving.
BUSHIDO: The customer is dead set on panasport wheels.
[email protected]: Thanks!
allntrlundrgrnd: It really does. You should come by and check us out.
iHeartTheTouge: Thanks. I will be taking detailed pics.
projectb13: Just wait till its done.
HyperTek: That is badass. Is that a r33 dash in that thing? Looks like it was meant to fit in there.
Here is the inspiration that the owner has given me. He basically said "Here's a car and lets build something like this."
http://www.tunerzine.com/articles/188/images/04.jpg
LS240: Well I think it will be the ultimate 260z for the owner. Which is most important.
I do agree though. A r34 vspec 2 gtr with a midori built ls7 putting out 1100 awhp through the Atessa awd would be pretty fun. My 1000 whp fc will be pretty cool too, but thats def not a street car.
This will be fun. Working AC, nice stereo, easy to drive. Fun fun fun.

i am considering either an RB25 1/2JZ, LSx, or SR for my Z. i really wanna stick to a 6cyl. needs a lot of work! anyone on the east coast let me know if you know a good metal worker. i have a lot of rust to deal with! after that, its the above mentioned motors! looks good! keep up the good work!

thanks guys. Thats an e30 m3. Yes a real one. It has a euro spec e36 m3 engine with ITB's side exit exhaust, brembos, coilovers, the works. It belongs to my friend eric. We are doing the cage, and have done work on it in the past like side exit exhaust, full system, and other garb. Look for it in front of you at a california race track in the near future.
Btw. We are also looking to work on more peoples cars. If you have a project from doing a simple sr swap to a turbo ls1 anything in mind... Let us know.
Thanks.

So there is something I've always wanted to see done to a 240z. and blu, I know you have the fab skills for it.
You'll need the glass cover housings for the headlight "cave". Move headlights to front grill or below original location and stick a turbo in each side where the headlights used to be. you could even plumb up piping in between the two old headlight positions and mount a filter for nice cold air.
Of course this would all be easier if you were running a V8 and didnt need street legal. Haha.

you can find 260z and 280z chassis cheapier then 240z.. Its just about finding a gem, me and robby found a clean chassis no rust 73 260z for like 800 bucks and he bought it.. Alot of people dont like those models so they tend to go cheaper.. Had the car been running and the owner knew what it was, it would fetch more.
Super clean 240z range alot more... check ebay sometimes restored models will be anywhere 15k and up.
example, this guy wanting to pay up to 8k for a 72 4speed http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/wan/836590644.html

example, this guy wanting to pay up to 8k for a 72 4speed WANTED Original 1972 Datsun 240Z with 4 speed transmission (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/wan/836590644.html)
Ah there is no such thing as a 73 260z. What Robby probably purchased, was a early 74 which had a late summer or even fall 73 construction date, on the vin plate. If it was registered as a 73 someone was an idiot when registering it and based it off the vin plate.
260Z's existed for one model year and one model year only 74! The 280Z was brought out in 75. Nissan has habit of constructing next years models from august of each year forward.
Oh and yes S30 purists in the U.S., do not like 260Z's or 280Z's as the cars got heavier, due to federal crash safety standards. Plus the power, was not increased enough, to compensate.

late 260 and 280z's are the best S30 platform to start building up IMO.
-Much more rigidity in the chassis due to more structural reinforcement.
-Beefed up suspension.
-Fuel tank setup for EFI
the weight issue is nebulous once the bumpers/shocks/associated hardware is removed. My 280Z weighs 2250lbs.

Thanks guys. I dont really have any other real updates today. I was busy working on a sr swap, m3 cage, and ordering parts for the 260z today.
I did find a nice little surprise in the shop today. A little baby snake.
This thing was a quick mover, but after some chasing I was able to catch the little guy, and bring him outside and set him free.
Any idea on what kinda snake it was?
Had an orange stripe around his neck.

shit....i would think you'd almost be at $15k with just paint and the swap...with really cheap labor rates.
and custom CNC alum suspension arms!?!?!?! that's baller shit.....and i can only imagine how many hours it would take to get that all done up.
don't discount ur work too much man....gotta get paid! and ur work is definitely top dollar shit

a. lower his expectations
or
b. come with lots and lots of cash so u can do it up right!

Isn't that Vildini Motorsport's car? Alex Villabrillo (SR240Z on here, iirc) or his dad should be the one driving it at any SCCA event. I've got/had several pics of that car from a few years back when they built it, on my laptop. I'll post a few so long as the OP doesn't mind. That car is inspiration to say the least.

Update:
We might be going RB26dett
The owner of the car reads this thread. So lets help him decide between rb25det series 2, and rb26dett.
Heres what I have already told him.
Pros.
Its a freakin rb26dett and thats badass!
ITB's stock !
No need for greddy intake manifold (saves $900).
Twin turbo !
Adds value to the car.
More potential.
More usable powerband.
And its sexier.
Cons:
Cost more.
More complicated turbo plumbing, and intake setup.
More complicated exhaust setup.
Higher cost for replacement parts.
More parts that can potentially fail.

OK this just doesn't make sense. You are putting an engine with easily over 600hp potential (either rb25 or rb26) in a car that when completed will have a curb weight of like 2200lbs and you are making logical points against the more badass motor? Dude, just make it badass!!! It is not going to be even remotely close to practical anyways, even with the rb25. It is going to be a complete handful to drive, will have more than a couple one-off parts, will be noisy and just generally uncomfortable, will cost an arm and a leg to build and subsequently to repair. Why cheap out on the motor? It is not going to make the car any less practical, as it has passed impractical by far already, and it will make it way more badass.

Why cheap out on the motor? It is not going to make the car any less practical, as it has passed impractical by far already, and it will make it way more badass.
I see your points. But it will be controllable power. Its not going to have some big laggy turbo.
It will actually be quiet with full interior, sound deadening, working AC, this thing will be a plush street car. Not a race car.

Update:
We might be going RB26dett
The owner of the car reads this thread. So lets help him decide between rb25det series 2, and rb26dett.
Heres what I have already told him.
Pros.
Its a freakin rb26dett and thats badass!
ITB's stock !
No need for greddy intake manifold (saves $900).
Twin turbo !
Adds value to the car.
More potential.
More usable powerband.
And its sexier.
Cons:
Everything Cost more.
I simplified your Cons list, all of the things you mentioned was just cost - COST is the only reason that should be keeping him from deciding on a RB26....the motors really don't deserve comparison other then that, haha.
Maybe simplifiy the suspension set up to save on other costs? I'm not sure where money can be subtracted and added on to the motor cost...but so long that he's dead set on a RB motor there is always a SR (hopefully I don't get shot for saying that).
I'd personally love a S30Z with a SR....I'd also love one with a L28 with a big ass cam and 45mm ITBs (technically not the right word).....but that's besides the point.
I'd prefer the RB36 on the look of the valve cover/way the manifolds look alone, haha.

It is STILL 400+ hp in a 2200lb car, that is inherently not practical especially in a s-30z which is tail happy to begin with. I highly doubt a s-30 can ever be turned into a "plush street car". Push for a s-30z, sure; plush by modern standards, absolutely no way in hell. Honestly man just make it as badass as possible while maintaining theoretical street dirveability and "plushness". The rb26 would just be a sick thing to add to the mod list and would make it way more badass. Afterall you are trying to make this car cool, not ultimately fast. If you were going for ultimate speed a SR would be going in for weight distribution, sound deadening and plushness wouldn't be an issue, and there would be some badass custom suspension going into it. Just make it as badass as the customer's budget will allow.

I stumbled upon this one.. think it may be someones on here
http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/7932/mys302turbofv4.jpg
keep it basic
even an SR would be cool IMO
yeah, that's my '76..
I'd say if you aren't building an all out race car, the RB25 will more than suffice. RB26 IS badass, but why exactly...
If you had an unlimited budget to work with I understand. But I think the extra money for a 26 could be better spent on chassis overhaul/reinforcement.

I know this isn't among the options listed as far as engine swaps go, but if I were doing a Z build I would look into doing a VQ30DET swap. The car would have great balance, a great power curve and great part access seeing as how the VQ motors have been on our shores for sometime now. Just my 2 cents, but either way a great start to what I know will be an awsome build!
This is a vq35de, but you get the point. Great motor placement for a light V6 around 330 LBS IIRC and lots of interchangeability amongst the other VQ's.

Nice Z Bushido....what you got under the hood?
I think i'm with turtle m3th on this one. I love RB's to death...but i think you'd be better off with something lighter in one of these. It's a lightweight car, so i wouldn't wanna mess that up with a big ass chunk of iron up front.
and furthermore, the lightweightness doesn't require mad power to scoot. even a 300whp SR would make it a very capable machine
my vote is for: SR, VQ, LSx, or anything u can come up with that's aluminum and beast
blu808
09-15-2008, 03:38 AM
Well the Stock engine is an iron inline 6. Even a 26 with the turbos is around the same weight as the stock setup. It will handle fine!
An sr would be cool, but they are so gutless off turbo.
I would do an lsx if this were my car, but on the other hand with an OG build you gotta keep it in the family.

I agree.
I say if you can afford a little extra, then put the RB26 in. It ultimately has more potential (Think HKS V-cam). And is more supported by the aftermarket.
I wouldn't know what to get if it were mine and I had the money. RB/VQ/VH/VK are all tempting.

if the owner can do an rb26, do it. hands down. It wouldnt take many upgrades to get good, streetable power, so less upgrades=more reliable. (with most of my experiences..)
this is one thing I'll always kick myself for... a family friend who owned a shop out in the middle of nowhere..had TWO (count them, TWO!) 240z's sitting next to the shop, unmolested. He always had dreams of building them, and even offered me one of them when i was 17... but being naive as hell, said thanks but no thanks. The cars are long gone and crushed. *tear*

Why can't you? With enough sound deadener, new carpet, and refinished interior it should be like a new car. I agree I would keep it around 400-450hp, it will be more streetable and plenty fast for a car that light. RB25 should be fine.

If you wanna add 100-200lbs of sound deadening then maybe, but then what is the point. It is an old skool z! Compare a brand new s-30z to a brand new 350z, the s-30 will not come close to comparing in any way, especially comfort and driveability. It is supposed to be impractical and gnarly, that's the whole point of building one. Z's are tailhappy even with the original engine, triple the horsepower with approximately the same weight distribution and you have a tail happy monster. An EXTREMELY dope tail happy monster, but a monster none the less.

If he still hasnt decided on a motor yet then here's my $0.02 ...
Why not an LS1..............?
The most simple way to make it a badass car. No turbos or complicated plumbing or crazy tuning needed. A stock LS1 in a car this light would be enough to demolish just about any other street car, parts are cheaper and wayyyy easier to source, and its even somewhat practical as itll definitely get better gas mileage (if practicality in a street car is the name of the game). If I could build a street driven S30 any way I wanted it, LS1 would be the name of the game.

Luke - you are correct about not throwing off the weight ratio, but wouldn't improving upon it make this even more of a bad ass build!!! And I know I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but who the hell cares what make your powerplant comes from as long as the damn car does what you need it to do. I would guess 100lb at the most should do it and its still a 2400-2500lb car roughly. I sorta hear you though its supposed to have that old school feel but if its done right a modernized s30 would be pretty sweet. I saw someone retrofit a complete 350z dash and VQ35 in a 240z and everything worked correctly it was pretty badass.

Since we are installing full coilovers on this car we will be adding camber plates to all 4 shock towers. Unfortunately this is a little more involved than on a s chassis.
Here are the camber mount plates. We will need to cut the original shock tower tops out, and weld these laser cut bad boys in.

Someone should point out to him that his turn signals in the airdam are upside down. he needs to switch them left to right, and flip'em. Not to mention they're mounted in the wrong space. Those are vent holes for fogs or brake ducting. should've done what I did and use motorcycle turn signals:

what i think should be removed and shaved the most is that hideous rear bumper and bumper shocks . the whole back end shaved would look so bad ass . that rear bumper just ruins the lines of this sexy car . imo

A friend showed me this thread..gave me an excuse to post my car here.
I have a 73 240Z...3.1 stroker (280Z block with big bore kit), triple Mikuni 44s, mild cam, threaded coilovers (w/ shortened strut tube), 280Z tranny/rear end, Nardi deepcorn wheel, JIC Racing ti exhaust, Longchamp rims, and a bunch other stuff.
I'm not a huge fan of the Wangan Midnight Z look. I think it's kind of generic/overplayed (the ZG flare with the same Watanabe Type R rims). Kind of reminds me of the Honda guys that all have the exact same looking Civic hatchback...Civic Type R headlights/front lip, duckbill wing, black Spoon rims, etc..
I want to put some type of flare on my car and put wider Longchamps on (like 15x10s/15x9.5s)
My car is on a slight incline..that's why the front rim looks to have a gap (it's actually almost tucked).

I don't mean to shit on your thread. I was just posting because there isn't a lot of Z owners that are into the jdm style of Z car builds...most are into the racing stripes, 17s, and a Chevy V8 swap. I just posted pics of my car mainly to show my cars setups and to give you an idea in case there is anything you like/want to do on your ride. I won't post again dude..don't worry.
EDIT: I've created quite a few Z car threads showing off my car in a few forums and it's pretty common for other Z members to chime-in/post pics of their cars since it's a pretty small community/and the cars aren't exactly abundant.

Thats cool man. I like your car, and its always nice to see pictures to get other ideas. I just think most of the people who are subscribed to this thread would like to see updates on the car itself.
