So as i was at work yesterday i got to thinking. Im tired of cleaning up my kids room all these toys everywhere and them jst sitting around not doing much. I want them to go outside and excercise see the out door life. Well my backyard looks like shit and i have never gardened in my life. So i wanted to get some tips on those who have and can shed some light. Im going to take a few pictures of the backyard to show how its like now.

At the current moment what i do have in mind on corner of the yard i want to add a pond and purchase koi fish. Im thinking of pulling the weeds today and using a hose to gravel the dirt and purchase some seeder or buy sod and add topper to it. Though i get lots of sun and i know its not good for sod. Itll turn it yellow and what not. Damn i sound like a pro already. Well anywho give me some tips folks. Pics will be up in a second after i get up from bed and take a shower. lol.

Awesome a home thread!

My backyard is just grass now. I'm planning on doing an arbor and a two story ceck on the back of my house in the future.

Ponds are cool, but you have to keep up with them a lot I guess.

Boba, after having done a few yards already I can honestly say "plan, plan, plan". Google is your friend.

Research what grows best for your area. Determine what your priorities are (for example, if you want kids to play back there... a kio pond is probably NOT a good idea).

Then go & price stuff out at Home Depot. You'd be surprised how quick it can add up.

Next, come up with a plan in stages. You won't be able to finish the whole yard at once, so decide where to start (something that will be most rewarding, to encourage you to slave on).

As for sod, it is grass. Sunlight is what grass needs to grow. You just need to make sure it is properly watered, and the right nutrients are applied. Alternatively, you can conduct a soil test, plant your own seed & feel proud that your grass looks even better than sod :)

Let me know...

I figured. My ex's mother has a pond. I was going to see how she keeps it up from the debris. Around the pond i do plan on adding a edging around it so dont wont get in to easily. Im more worried about the kids trying to take the fish out.

I plan on also putting in about 13 roses and a couple of hanger plants. One thing i do have a problem with is there is a cat that is coming into my yard and marking territory on the side of my house. I have an idea how to solve that issue. Im going to get up now though clean and take some shots since the kiddies or at the uncles.

depending on how old the kids are..i'd be more worried about them falling in than them taking the fish out.:aw:

Yeah i was worried a little about the pond so well see maybe i can make a barrier or what not. lol. But i have sod now in the front but its terribly ruined due to the sun and the dry humidity. I was thinking St Augustine but the guy warned me about how the weeds grow pretty fast and its not good grass as if i were doing sod. Meaning it wouldnt be fluffy and nice looking. But itll be a bit stronger resisting to the sunlight.

Ill be back in a few guys with some photos. I did draw a layout of what i wanted though and came up with the figure cost of it. But as you said it takes time and you cant do it all at once. Some of the stuff i already did such as the roses. I got some of the roots from the exs mom and we planted them across the wall and some are growing.

The ponds they carry are not that deep they are about 12 inches smaller than a kiddy pool. I dont leave them unattended. They cannot get outside due to the security gate and the thumb lock we installed on top. It was either making a trench and putting the pond in that way or make a stepping type area where the pond is 4ft up.

the backyard. I have some shit back there i need to clean like the pool that took me 5 fuckin hours to blow with air and the kids havent used yet because its gross trampling dirt back into the pool after getting out of it due to no grass so i have not done anything to it.

The pond is going to be in that corner.

After i took photos i locked myself out the house and so i had to work outside for an hour and a half till someone came to open the door but i did yard work! :keke: how much i got done.

My ex's mom said i should lay topper down and then sod and start growing it that way cause of how hot it is. So well see. Tomorrow i plan on taking the whole yard apart.

All the grass in my backyard burned due to the humidity and excess sun, and of course Ill-care. Now I have small patches of grass left here and there, and theres no way to revive it unless i do the whole yard over again.

As far as the work required to get this done. Theres no way itll be done in a day or 2, Id need a whole workforce with me to dig out the yard, reseed the lawn, and fix the broken sprinkler connections.

I wish you luck! Hard work does pay off. Post pics of ur ongoing progress so it provides some motivation for lazy people like me.

Gasoline and some Matches will do the trick. You guys are going to laugh at me, But I love doing gardens. I help my mom sometimes. Plus I have a green thumb.

my parents' house, where i grew up, is on an acre. there's not much to do in the back yard, except there's a couple massive bamboo thickets that i hacked paths through, indiana jones style. and i had a go kart, that was sick. i always wanted goldfish, that'd be awesome as a kid. go for the koi pond.

my house's back yard is nothing right now... we're going to build a deck and put up a pool, deck before winter and pool in the spring. and we just secured a free pool table to stick back there, drew carey style :D

Good luck. My wife just started working on our yard both front and back.

Spent a full 12hrs doing the backyard and its 100x better, and she's spent a lot of time in the front. It makes a huge difference on the way the house looks but still has a long way to go. I personally have no patience or desire for that stuff.
