I am new to CA. I moved here from TN. I drive a slammed coupe with an Sr with just a 3 in pipe from the downpipe back.
What are the laws around here as far as height goes and car mods.??
Smog.? Can i just find a stock exhaust and put it on or what exhaust can i buy and pass it.?
I have been doing some reading but i dont know what a ref ticket is and shit like that.
Basically what can i get away with and what should i not do to my car.??

Height:
Car must be 24" at middle of headlights....nothing can hang below bottom of wheel rim.
SR not legal for road use here...Good luck with smog....
Exhaust...anything from CAT back ok as long as it does not exceed a maximum DB (95 I think)
Get with your local 240 crowd....They will know how draconian and or smart the local coppers are. Welcome to Cali...Where'd you end up?

By the way, get FULL alarm, quick release, kill switch, lock up your clutch pedal, and park your car in garage!!!
Swap back to KA if you daily your coupe, otherwise you will end up selling you car after you got a ref ticket. GOOD LUCK
WELCOME TO CALIFORNIA!!!

^^^^ you can only keep the TN tags for so long. because its illegal to drive around with foreign plates for more than a certain time.

keep your tn drivers license, and don't apply for a ca one. don't register your car here take it back to tn for inspection. what a hassle. and lift the coupe up a little.
mine is a silvia coupe sr with 3'' pipe, that i dd and hav'nt been stopped yet. knock on wood. good luck.

The best thing to do is to not attract as much attention to yourself as possible when driving around. Keep up with the other traffic even if it seems slow. I never hit more then 70mph on the freeway and I've had quite a few CHP's, bike and vehicles just pass right next to me or go around me. So pretty much, just keep a low profile.

This is how I've always stayed out of trouble with all my modded cars I've owned in the past.

As far as the smog its two hundred and it will pass. But i didnt say shit.
The law right now is that ref tickets are not being given but the price for a ticket is doubled and for the plates trust get cali plates because cops in my area go for people that they dont see everyday, if you have questions on the smog pm me

as long as you live in a state for less than 6 months, or can prove it, you dont have to transfer anything. all the state wants in money money money. my sister was in chicago for school for 2 years and yes, she doesnt have to change over driver license, plates, or anything. there are exemptions, and you are in a position to take advantage of them being out-of-state. may you bring liberty to all!

wow that kinda sucks cause i dont have a license at all... it was susspended in TN...
and since i dont have proof of residence there within the last 4 months i cant get one either...not in tn .
so my options:
CA license with TN tags or
CA license with CA tags.?

I think CA laws changed for exhaust, to where any modification to exhaust is illegal now. I could be wrong, but that's what I heard.

the law is still the same as it always has been, under 95 db and you're good.
I would say, best bet is don't drive hard. keep the lowest profile possible.

Yes, I heard about this too but not 100% sure!! as long the exhuast is not SUPER LOUD then cops wont stop you.
I was on 57 last week toward Diamond Bar, a bike cops followed me and stare at my exhuast then ride next to me and kinda slow down to listen if is too loud. Later on, he pull in front if me and use his side mirrors to see if I have front intercooler. I was doing 70 mph so he just took off!! THANK GOD!!!
Also, my cousin have a hatch with SR and he drive it EVERYDAY from Rowland Heights to Hollywood never got pull over.. knock on wood :mepoke:

24400. (a) A motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle, shall be:
(1) Equipped with at least two headlamps, with at least one on each side of the front of the vehicle, and, except as to vehicles registered prior to January 1, 1930, they shall be located directly above or in advance of the front axle of the vehicle. The headlamps and every light source in any headlamp unit shall be located at a height of not more than 54 inches nor less than 22 inches.
V.C. Section 24400 - Headlamps on Motor Vehicles (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc24400.htm)
You also need front license plates and no limo tints on the driver/passenger windows.
Afaik, exhaust modifications are still legal as long as they are under the required db, BUT cops can use that as an excuse to inspect your equipment (as in under the hood). I can't remember what section they cite, I'll have to dig around. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc27151.htm
Techinically, any modification precat is not legal without a BAR sticker.
I'm not sure if you can get your license here because yours is suspended in TN.

<<<<< Smog tech
Exhaust: pre obdII DB requirment nothing more, after 96 requires E.O.# [CARB approval] Nothing from the cat to the head on either without a E.O.#
Headlight:22in from the ground as stated above.
License: states are interconnected now, you must resolve suspension issue to get cali license. Or wait 7 yrs for it to drop from record.
Tags: you have 3 months from the time you moved to cali to change them over. Big fines and penalties if you get nailed.
Engine: car must have a federally tested and approved motor[tested when cars are submitted from car manufacturer new] That is of the same yr or newer then the chassis. If it is not an engine that was offered in the car in the us new it requires refferee approval and a BAR sticker on the door panel.
Insurance: You are required to have liability insurance to register your car.
The ref will reopen when the buget passes.
Alternate smog methods. Smog techs do it but be carful the risks are huge for you and the tech. If caught Jail time is in order for both parties. I wont do it. To risky.
Fonix be carful spout that of on the boards, if your the tech you are putting your self in jepordy by making it public, if its a friend of yours you should consult him before posting like that. If you are both comfortable doing it this way , well good luck to you hope you dont get caught!
