Hey my friend today was bitching at me about how bad 240sx are at being reliable. I was like sure and your DSM isnt. He has a leaky fuel line and crap like that. But, I soon going to by a hatchback and I was wondering are they a pain in the ass. I mean I can handle little breakdowns and what not but like what are the main headaches. I loved driving my friends it was tits (that means kool) well thanks all.

If his has a FUEL LINE LEAK he has NO room to talk. Wait til' some one drops a cig next to his car....then she who has the bigger problems....

No offence but your friend is a fecking moron. The only thing that could be better on the HB's is the rear weather seal and the spoiler has been known to rust like mad. The KA is a very strong reliable motor. If you keep up with basic maintenance you shouldn't have any serious problems...that is of course if the person that had the car before you took care of it. Overall is the engine/car reliable? Ask some of the guys on here who have well over 150K miles.

The same one I've heard of people driving with for 50,000 miles, only to take off the valvecover and not really notice any chainsaw effect that so many people claim?

Also, as for Nissan reliability in general... I heard a story from a guy who was at some kind of meet. They put a few old engines up on engine stands for everyone's amusement... an old Nissan motor and a Mazda rotory. Both were given fluids and run for as long as possible at redline to see how they held up.
15-20 seconds into the redline run, the rotary motor destroyed itself in a spectacular puff of smoke.
8 minutes later the Nissan was still running strong.
Then there was a guy who had a Maxima he wanted to destroy for some reason... his dad bought it for him and the plick thought he could get his dad to buy him a brand new sports car, but his dad wouldn't do that until the Maxima became bad enough to maintain.
Anyway, he had developed an oil leak at one point or another, and decided to drive, and drive, and drive, and drive, and drive without changing or refilling the oil. 5,000 miles into this process he developed an oil lash lifter-type tick. Engine still running strong though. Another 5,000 miles and the engine, being completely starved of oil for a fair amount of time while having the **** run out of it, finally went kaput.
I'd say our cars are reliable as hell.

Really well I have been to some dealerships where the owners or workers have been pull starts I mean i couldnt really understand them. But they were like 240SX=crap and I was looking around and I noticed on some cars that their fenders were misaligned so some buyers were looking at a civic that you could tell it was in an accident so, me being pissed went up and told them to ask the dealers about its history so he said they were brand new i was like bs and told the person what i saw wrong. Good thing I helped somebody not by a POS. But yeah Im just doing my research im looking into getting an older one because there is something just about them but they have high miles. I have done engine swaps with my friends F22 into a Civic hatchback that was fun with some curse words. But its so tits (MTC word). I want a car to work on and experience the beauty of it. haha. well thanks everybody but can you guys go farther into the Timing Chain. thank you guys. peace

man, the 240 is big fat oprah winfrey tits! :p
the only problems i can think of have already been mentioned... if you buy a hatch w/ the foam spoiler, there's almost a 100% chance it's started rusting.

How true. Got a 91 HB with over 150k miles on the thing. Still runs beautifully. Slight hesitation in 2nd gear, but that might be the tranny. And yes, the addition of the spoiler cause rust. But hey, as AKADriver says, "Rust builds character."

Rust thats a bitchha. not good but 150K im looking at this one with 112K 5sp 1991 HB. Ohh my friend made another run he said once I get my 240SX well race. I was like well its stock and yours has Intake Plugs (like it does anything) and custom exhaust. He was like soo. I was like let me throw a Turbo or CA or SR into it and wheres the spoon so you can eat my ass because thats all your going to see. He laughed and I said you smell that smells like gas. He frowned and I walked off.
Ohh Whats the digital dash and does anybody have a picture of it.
Thanks

My head hurts from the lack of punctuation.
S-chassis (as well as most other Nissans) are reliable cars, as long as they're properly maintained. I've seen a few over 200k and one at 250k. I hope to run my engine till it hits 300k. I'm over halfway there.
