View Full Version : Ways to load a rolling chassis on a trailer?

Ok so I have an S14 that I've been stripping down, but unexpectedly I have to move, and worse than that, its halfway across the country, so Im stuck trying to find a way to get a heavy-ass full rolling chassis on a car hauler (that Im renting from uhaul). Does anyone have any proven ways of getting a non-running chassis on a trailer?
Im thinking about parking the trailer and chaulking the wheels, disconnecting it from the hauler, pushing the car up behind the trailer, and wrapping a chain around one of the tow hooks and using my truck from in front of the trailer to haul the car up on the trailer, but that doesnt sound like the, um, smartest way to do it.
anyone have any good ideas?
The engine is there, but some of the parts of the wire harness are disconnected and Im not sure where they go, Im not very good with motors yet. There's also no radiator, but there is oil and tranny fluid etc in it. Also whatever the hose is that comes out of the valve cover just kinda goes nowhere? :hyper: I seriously doubt itll run, there's no gauges, no radio, no anything on the inside (the security thingy is plugged in though), etc etc, and I doubt itd run even if it would start cuz theres no maf RWAR.
so yah, if any of you awesome people could help that'd be great

ive done this
takes 5 guys at most (4 required if they are strong) girl can go inside too
one inside on driver seat
the rest pushing
push it up
its not hard.
done it MANY times
if it cranks?
put it in gear
kill the battery AND load it up buy cranking the engine
it will get itself on the trailer.

trick your friends into pushing it
bribe with beer or pizza
are the ramps too high for it to push unto the ramp?

Just bring the truck and trailer onto an area with a lower elevation. So, even though the trailer is like 2 feet off the ground a small elevation change can make it so that the ramps are about parallel to the ground.
Then push. orrrr... get 7 people and push. :D

I've driven the rx7 around the yard like this multiple times, moving it so people can get in/out of the garage.
if its just a shell with a motor, you should have no problem driving it with the starter onto a trailer

just get a couple of ratchet straps, secure them to the trailer and the chassis and start cranking them. it'll take a minute or two but just another way of doing it.

disconnect your fuel before you start cranking it.

I just moved a full s14 filled with parts onto a trailer with only two people. I would recommend a third to steer if you can get one. (I drove 3 hours to get it, and had trouble finding people to go on a road trip on short notice)

u-haul trailers are pretty low-profile. I was able to get my car on one recently without even raising the coilovers. a couple of people should be able to push it on no prob.
disconnect your fuel before you start cranking it.
note: remove the fuse to your fuel pump, don't just disconnect a fuel line.

DO NOT DISCONECT THE TRAILER FROM THE TRUCK WHEN YOU LOAD IT!!!!
As soon as the front wheels get up on the back, the tounge of the trailer will go ski high!!!!

Best idea yet...... Have your friends stand behind the car and back the truck trailer up into it. Pray no one dies!!!!! (sarcasm)

Just push the shit out of like everyone else has said.
We've had to do it multiple times, with donor shells, taking chassis to paint, etc..

UMMMM, wow anyone ever heard of a come-a-long and some 4x4's all you need is one person and some patience
i done it with pushing up on the trailer and with the come-a-long and i must say that a come-a-long is less stressful

i pushed an s13 with a motor not running onto a u haul autotransport.
got like 50foot running start and up it went.
not gonna lie it took 4 tries and almost fell off the trailer on the first 3

push the car up a hill. park your uhaul down the hill and then proceed to push the car down the hill aim at the back of the trailer. this will maximize time possibility of the car succesfully loading onto the uhaul trailer.

Lol reminds me of when I pulled a non-running VW MK2 GTi a block and a half with just two motorcycle tie down straps and my Tacoma... put the owner of the VW in his car, working the steering wheel and the ebrake, and drove steadily up a huge driveway and around the block. Honestly, I had my doubts we would make it safely, but that's the beauty of the wheel - just push it.

this usually doesnt work with a hill not being anywhere, and its way harder to push a car uphill then it would be to push it some ramps...

I was picking up a roller GSX once and had to get it on the uhaul car hauler. Just hooked up a tow rope to the front tow hook on the gsx and to the back tow hook on my s14. Just drove parallel to the trailer and pulled to gsx right up on the hauler. Ghetto but it worked. Yeah we tried the push method, but only 2 people and one had to steer and it didnt work.

About two weeks ago I loaded my non-runnning s14 onto a uhaul car trailer. It took 5 people to get it up on there but it is definately possible. And this was a fully loaded chassis. Only reason its not running is the wiring harness is out.

how did you keep the front end of the trailer from going up, or was this not a problem?

if I had a wench do you really think I would have asked this question?

thanks man, that really helps so I know how many people its going to take if I have to do it by hand.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Cable pullers are cheap (less than $50) and I've used one to pull my car (with motor, etc) onto the trailer with no problems. You can go slow and not worry about whether or not the car is gonna fall off.
Winches are so awesome though, I can't wait to get one and call other guys at the track losers while my car is remotely pulled onto my trailer.

.
The trailer was attached to the truck that I was using to tow the vehicle, so the trailer didnt move.

I fail to see how a wench will get the car on the trailer. Might be good for bringing beer to thirsty workers.

I used my explorer to push my car on to the trailer with some cardboard in between so I didnt damage the cars. It worked like a charm ;)

If you could figure out a way to mount a winch, EZ PZ.
But I've seen dudes push a car up a trailer at the track.
Also maybe you could attach a tow cable to the truck and hook it to the car then pull it up the trailer thats parked?

winch/come-along/ratcheting straps, etc

Exactly! We ran a strap around the base of the front frame (where the radiator sits) and pulled it up on the trailer with a winch. You could also try running a single chain from both tow hooks and pull from the middle of it.

More than one way to skin a cat. A come-a-long works nicely. We always use a winch that we welded to our car hauler. A few friends can get the job done. The starter method works nicely for short distances. Many ways to do this. Just depends on your situation..... Good luck!

Listen to this guy. I once did this myself because I was in a hurry and did not wanted to wait for a friend. Just line up the car straight, and strap one side to the trailer and one side to the car and just start cranking. You may have to use two strap back to back just incase one is not long enough. 10-15 mins by yourself. You will run out of line, so just go inside the car, pull the ebrakes and readjust the straps.
Or you can ask ppl around/friends for help.

lol the doors couldnt be open on the trailer, so I ended up surfing on the side of the car steering it onto the trailer and jumping off and shutting the door as it went up on the trailer, then having to crawl in through the trunk to put it back in park and pull the ebrake and climbed back out through the sunroof lol :bigok:
