Anyone got pull over with a SR in you s13 or s14 in SoCal area?? Well two of my friends been pulled over in Rowland Height and Walnut area but no hood pop!!
1) My friend just got his s13 swaped with SR last week and he took the car out for a joy ride. We when down to Rowland Height to hangout with couple friends at TenRen in Dimond Plaza. (If you been to the old 626 Dimond Plaza meet you know how thoese cops in Rowland Height area). Anyways, on our way back to Diamond Bar we got pull over on Colima rd just pass Nogales ave. He was like "f***" .. His car has full Origin kit, TE37, lowered, and big a$$ HKS-Hi power exhuast (sound really quiet) and he was doing ONLY 35 mph!! and still got pull over for somehow. But the lucky thing is the cops only gave him a fix ticket for exhuast been too big and without poping his hood :eek3d:... werid. Well its good that he got away for the SR in his car.
2) Friend of mine just got out the summer class at Mt. Sac and heading to my other friends house in Rowland Hts. When he just turn onto Valley, he got pulled over right away by a cops that just come out from the plaza on Grand ave. All he got was just a exhuast ticket aswell and didnt get pop.
So both of them got lucky?? dont think so... so anyone had been pulled over lately (SR) but lucky without poping your hood??
Added:
Im not saying that everyone out there with s13 or s14 go get your SR swaped or.. what.. just want to see if anyone out there also got pulled over without getting pop.

I've been pulled over a couple of times without getting my hood popped.
It all depends on the cop.

mm.. so whats the reason they pulled you over??
Question, what if you got pop (just an example) do they give you fix ticket or.. took your car away as impounted.

Same here. Been pulled over a couple of times but no hood pop. Once by CHP, and 2 or 3 by SDPD. I just drive normally to avoid cops attention. Be careful out there.

You must be lucky then.. most CHP knows about 240 and striaght forward to know whats under your hood.

Yes. Twice in 2006. Once on hacienda goin into whittier. Speeding ticket in the rain.
Another in antelope valley for an illegal u-turn. and no seat belt. with automatic seatbelts. -_-
both times my exhaust notes were in low rpm's.

I've been hood popped 3 times.
and each time was my own fault.
Keep your shit looking bone stock.
I'd rather have a stock looking 240sx with a heartplant.
Than a kitted out 240sx with fat wheels with a heartplant.

I had a little run in with the chp
My hotpipe popped off on the freeway and my car died. So i pulled over, pop my hood break out the ratcheting 10mm and while im tightening up the t bolt clamp CHP surprises me by walking up to me while my hood is popped.
Heres the conversation with the cop.
CHP: "whats up boss, you ok?"
ME:"Yea, a pipe came off while i was driving so i pulled over to fix it."
CHP:"Oh, your hotpipe to your intercooler came off?"
Me:".....!!!?????"
He then steps back and says "nice front mount, what kind is it?"
CHP: "XS Power!??? why didnt you get a greddy or hks?"
Im fucking sweating bullets, he knows what hes talking about.
Me:"......"
CHP:"You know this sr20 is illegal right?
I didnt say shit, haha
CHP:"watch out for other cops cuz they will take your shit. (He said he has better things to do then ticket someone for something stupid.)
Then he said he liked my rims and he let me go.

But then i also heard your car is then put on a black list and if you get it "smogged" you and the person who smogged it will be in deep shit.... this may not be true as some one could of been feeding me a line of shit

^Seriously.
When I got my hood popped, meanwhile a POS prick cop was writing me a ref ticket(for a fucking header/intake...come on...), i was talking to the other cop about s-chassis.
Turns out, he had bought one back in 95(he bought a 91) and lightly modified it.
Asked me if my exhaust was HKS, if I was running spacers on my wheels, and a few other technical questions.
Most cops aren't all that bad.
It really comes down to how you act toward them.
I've only been pulled over twice so far once was I was 100% wrong.
I was paying more attention to my GPS than the road and I had a decision to make the light or come to a screeching halt. After choosing option 1 I acclerated paying no attention to what gear I was in and didn't make it. Funny thing is soon as I realized I wasn't going to make it and I had the full attention of the local PD coming in the towards me. I knew I was caught so by the time she turned around I was parked with my license and reg. Luckly for me she probably knew I was military she pulled up next to me and told me "you know you were wrong but I got somewhere to go" I said Yes maam and thanked god. The other time I was looking for a Zilvian's house in a "nice neighborhood and looked suspious(sp?) creeping 8MPH. I was pulled over given directions and let go. Funny thing was he wanted me to leave first so I had to start my car. I started and prayed as I eased of and he didn't give a shyt. I honestly think its about appearance and attention you bring to yourself 90% of the time. 10% are cops with a pet peeve. Never forget the 10%!

^^^ Apparenty if your car does not look like its from factory, and modified, it's already probable cause. I wouldn't suggest though that you tell them to get a warrent to pop your hood if you do get pulled over. I usually just coporate with the officer, tell him everything that happened and acknowledge my wrong doing. Usually if you make the cops job easier on them, they'll make it easier on you.

my cars just lowered on s techs. stock everythign except for plug wires and exhaust and I have a cheapy filter but have the srock plastic intake. I've gotten pulled over about 7 times since I've had my car. 4 out of 7 of the times they made me pop my hood. luckily I just have a KA. I tell them its stock but they still spend like five minutes looking for something haha. glendora PD is really bad. and so are sherriffs around the sandimas covina glendora area. I mean don't get me wrong thats just my opinion. but whenever I see a cop he most likely pulls me over. and 99% percent of the time its glendora pd or a sheriff.

It all depends on how the cop wants to act. Some won't even bother wasting their time inspecting the engine. Some are just anal and will act like jerks on purpose and ask to pop your hood no matter what.
I've heard that West Covina police are pretty anal, but their cool with me usually, Covina PD scares me more.

Guess my friend just got lucky then... he drive almost everywhere with his s13, he rather drive his s13 instead of his BMW...
Today, we when to Little Tokyo right after work and got followed by 2 cops (not at the same time). We were follow for atleast 3 blocks and then cops just pass us. The other one was on the freeway when we heading back to Rowland Hts, it was a highway patro and drove right next to us and checking out the car for mins or 2 then took off.. wtf .. so I think my friend just got lucky

anyways. Plenty of pull overs for me, but no pop. Only once I got a ticket which was for speeding. And this was years back in my 95 Ford Lincoln Continental. 55 in a 45 that turned into a 40 for about 20 feet, then back up to 45. Still ten over in a street, but whatever.
S14, I got pulled over a looooooooooooooooooooooooot. Almost 2-3 times a month. Then I got a front plate and an exhaust and nothing yet. :) /knocks on wood.
On the other hand, driving home tonight off of Harbor (405) in Costa Mesa. I saw an EG pulled and popped by CHP and FVPD (Fountain Valley PD). I kinda drive by, then I come back and pull in because I wanted Carls Jr. Speaking about almost stalling in a higher gear trying to keep my exhaust quiet. lol

I've been driving my S14 around in current form for 4 months or so... no interior panels at all (except a dash), 3 60mm gauges, Momo seat, steering wheel, totally stripped interior, etc - slammed, kitted, rims, aspec burnt tip exhaust (but it's quiet), loud BOV, cf hood, front mount, no front plate, and out of date reg sticker (car's reg'd just waiting on my vanity plates to come in for the sticker).
Haven't got pulled over once. *knock on wood*
In my S13 I used to get pulled over all the time (slammed, front bumper, silver car with a red hood), but usually just given warnings. The one time I did get popped/impounded, it was for an out of date registration.

From my experience, I think if you just make them think you're an idiot, they'll ignore you. Like if I have music playing in my car while I'm driving and I see a cop pull up next to me at a light or something I just start really getting into the music, dancing and singing. Usually they all do the same thing, kinda just look at me and give like "wtf.." look and just jet off lol. But thats just my hypothesis.

I got pulled over in Cerritos for a modified exhaust but I was let go. The cop was doing a ride along so I guess he wanted to show the passenger some "action" haha
That being said, if you have a swapped engine I would run a front plate, no tint, a low key muffler and anything else to make sure there is no reason for a cop to pull you over.

It's simply my opinion that our driving habits should be more definitive of our restrictions.. the govt's nose is too long, yada yada.. I think the government has bigger problems than what's inside my car that I purchased with my money that I worked for, and so on. It basically means, I don't think of it as something that values my time and tax money.

I agree 100%. I drive my S14 like a grandma and can still get pulled over and have my car taken? And for what? It passes the fucking sniffer test!
I'm all about stiff punishments for being dumb (street drifting/exhibition, racing, etc). I'm not all about stiff punishments for having a different motor.

^100% agree.....if you're driving perfect, but get your car taken for a turbo, that's justice? That's what that extra money I really need for food or rent, is going to??? That's bs....and that's my opinion and I'm stickin to it.
I got followed going 5mph lookin for parking one earely morning after work. Was about I'd asay 330am(I worked secutiry at a strip club). So in my neighborhood I can never ever find parking. So I'm drivin, and creepin lookin for a space. When I come around again, there's a cop there, posted. Silently. No lights, no nuthin on. so I drive passed, keep my clutch in, and roll on by. Release the clutch, and go on my way in second. So there's a stop sign, and as I stop, cops roll behind me. I had to go in first, and that's when m exhaust is really loud. So I tried to keep my car as low as possible, and I don't ever drive like a donker....but anyways, cops follow me for 3 blocks, and then pulled me over two houses down from my apt building. Well they search my car cuz I was probation.found nothing, I'm clean. Wrote me up for mod. Exhaust. Started talkin to the cops about my car, and the male officer complimented me on my sportmax???? Hahahaha.... And its 50/50 .....sometimes you can be cool as hell to a cop, they'll still be a bonehead....those are the ones who got picked on in HS and didn't join the Trenchcoat Mafia...ahahaha.
Oh and when a cop drives behind you, or on the side of you, and then drives off, he's running your plates. Cops don't just wanna give tickets, they also wanna find people actuallybreaking laws that benefit society......so they chekc plates, warrants, no insurance...ect....
Brian

I agree that there are BETTER things for them to bring justice to.
There is far too much crime, killing, rape, drugs, etc, etc, etc.
I don't drive like an asshole. I drive the speedlimit. I signal when I change lanes. I drife SAFE. However, if I have too many stickers on the windows, car is too low, air filter is illegal, etc. I don't think I have any right to feel upset if I get busted for them.
You damn well know you are 100% breaking the law. Why bitch about it?
We open ourself up to being profiled by driving the cars we drive. We have nobody to blame but ourself.

I think a lot of the community, whether its imports or domestics, feel the same way about engine swaps, why not just write to your congressmen about the issue, sure people feel "oh they won't do shit!" but I mean, how many of us actually do tell them whats going on, or how we feel, I mean from honda's,nissans, mitsubishi's, there's ALOT of people in socal who probably feel the same and want change. I agree with GSXRJJordan about the whole sniffer, its not right imo and they should take care of other more important things then that.

So you did a "cali rolling stop" through a red light turning right, got caught with no license, no reg, and have an illegal swap? That's called "pushing your luck".
You know you're doing something dumb when he "lets you off" with a ~$400 ticket. Driving without a license or registration is just asking to get your shit impounded.

You know you're doing something dumb when he "lets you off" with a ~$400 ticket. Driving without a license or registration is just asking to get your shit impounded.
yea same thing happened to me last month. just i had my license and registration. he was real chill with me. and then at the end said. srry im gonna have to give you a ticket. didnt think it was gonna be that bad. till i got that shit in the mail. ouch. 425 dollars. but i went to traffic school cuz it was my first offence. i was literally goin like 5mph. its considered a Moving violation its like the same thing as running through a red light.
oh well.

I'm not all about double standards. It's cool to throw a 454 in a Chevelle that didn't come with one but heaven forbid you swap a Nissan.

Same thing happened to me once in my s13! Lowered/wheels/exhaust/intercooler on stock bodywork, but I had a craaaazy exhaust leak between the manifold and the turbo (didn't use the locking clamps at that point). Sheriff pulled me over for being way too loud coming off a stop light, I told him the car's old and a piece of shit, it's got an exhaust leak and I'm too poor to fix it, and that I was headed right home.
He laughed and laughed, said something about "kids these days" and let me off.

Yeah, and your Evo has nothing on a GSXR1000. It was dumb statement from Hondaboi and I think we all see that, we don't need to beat it to death. Oh, and K20 Honda's are targeted by cops just like SR's are targeted, because most are imported and/or stolen.

it is true which a lot of u have mentioned that it depends on the cop and how your attitude is which will determine the outcome of ur ticket. when i got my hood popped the cop thought my motor was stock and basically pointed out the basic mods exhaust, header and intake but just my luck he had called a backup unit to assist him and the 2nd cop knew exactly what my motor was... i was honest with the 2nd cop and told him straight forward wat i had on the sr, with that being done he let me off on a warning... so in my case i got real lucky but it does help to cooperate with the officer, u might get a ticket still but it wont be as bad

Today I was pulled over and had my hood popped. Cop didn't ask me to do anything, he gave me orders. Wrote me up for my car being 1/4inch too low. Asked me about me removing my airbag (steering wheel) but I told him I got the car like that. Oh yeah.. he pulled me over because of my pink godzira sticker at the bottom passenger side of my windshield. You can have all the illegal shit you want and get pulled over for a legit reason, but if the cops not a prick he could still let you go. So it doesn't matter how you drive. shit like this makes me never want to take my car to Sacramento and especially elk grove. When people say they can drive around and not get pulled over in sac I don't believe it. Some of my friends in Elk grove were getting pulled over twice in 1 day for the same stuff like modified exhaust, being to low, having HID's on a car that did not come with it from factory, etc.

Wow remind me not to move back to California! Here in St. Louis the cops dont know what drifting is and no one has heard of an SR20. You can run no exhaust with an open DP or headers and not get a second look. Cops are more worried about people making meth. Missouri is like the Meth capitol of the world or some shit. We even have cops watch us slide at the adbandoned rail yard some times. They are interested to learn what we are doing lol
Cop: I have been watching you guys for 20 minutes, you keep going around these cones in a set pattern.
Me: We are practicing Gymkana
Cop: Well its obviously not racing....but what in the hell is the point
Me: To get to be better at driving in highly technical situations using excessive braking, acceleration, drifting, and weight transfer.
Cop: Looks like fun. Have a good night and be safe!

I hope this is on topic...for you guys with out-of-state plates (like me) driving your car in CA, do you ever get popped or hassled about modifications? I imagine a noise violation is a noise violation or whatever, but do they even bother trying to see what you've done to the motor for a non-Cali vehicle?
GSXRJJordan

If you're driving in Cali, you're bound to CA modification laws - if your car wasn't a CA-model to begin with they can't make you pass CA smog or anything like that, but you can still be pulled over and hassled.

You should invest in a proper filter ASAP. I just read a thread about a guy whose autozone filter lost the little metal cap at the top of the cone; it ripped through the paper, flew into the compressor wheel and destroyed it. He was pissed.

today i went to torrance for something called jdm monday, whatever, anyways i meet my friends at this gas station, and like 10 mins later the cops show up and point into our group and then motion come over to them, i went over and the first thing the guy says is, "are you going to be doing any street racing in torrance tonight?" and my response was huh? so he repeated him self, and then said "or are you just going to go somewhere else and do it" I said, I only do that at the track up at willow springs, i have a clean driving record and would like to keep it that way. plus its way safer on the track. his response was " well we know people go over to van ness street and race, we wouldn't want to have to stop you and start checking vehicles for mods" and i asked where is this vaness street. (i had no idea anyways)
no worrys there... torrance is lame, but the cops are cool at warning you about the lame drag racer people.
about 8 months ago i was speeding on sunset, going 45 or so, saturday night, 130am got pulled over, ( the cop had me pull into a red curb zone) said i was speeding, then asked if when the last time i had a drink, and i told him about 400 and some odd days ago, and he thought i was being a wise ass, but since i'm sober its true... anyhow, he asked me to get out of the car so he can have me do some field sober tests ( and i got a rush of anxiety) and he asked me raise one leg, look up at the sky and touch one finger to my nose. (and i was on a slight hill too) i couldn't do it, but at the same time i was not taking him seriously, i swore this was some sort of joke, i even told him, is this some sort of punk'd reality tv shit. anyways i finally told him, look i'm not drunk, give me a breathalyzer test. well he had to take me to the station to do it, and put me in the back of the car, but offered to move my car to a metered parking spot so it would not get towed, and i was like ok.
so he starts the car and the whole time i am behind the car i am thinking oh shit he's going to know is sr.... he goes and i hear varooom, pssst, varooom pst. then he parks it gets in the car, starts driving, and he starts asking me if i have a turbo or super charger or nitrious, that its quick, and i told him i dunno, its a cute little sports car, i bought it cause it looks cute, but i think i got ripped off cause it makes all sorts of wierd noises when i shift over 3k rpms...
i go to the station, blow a 0 on there machine and they take me back to my car.......

You've been asking a lot of dumbshit questions lately.
1) I think it's a bad idea.
2) yes, you can (and eventually will) get your car impounded just for having an sr20 in there
3) "Fix it" - negative. The tickets are for "modified emissions" and must be passed off by the ref (which you'll need a completely stock engine for), pay a $380 fine, or both.
4) You should not own an engine that can get your only car taken away - because then, you truly are fucked. That's why we all have multiple cars.
Reading through this thread... it sounds like a right ball ache! It makes me appreciate that here in the UK, you can do what the f**k you want as long as it passes an annual safety check (brakes, lights, rust etc).
Sorry if this is a dumb queston, but say you have a car registered to a different state that allows more modications, is it still illegal to drive in CA?

honestly, like what everyone has been saying, it all depends on YOU.
1. The way you drive.
2. The way your car looks.
3. And the way you interact with a cop, when pulled over.
me persoanlly, i have daily driven a SR20 for about 8 - 9 months. I have gotten pulled over, but never hasseled. Always drove safely and responsibly. And i never did anything stupid on the streets. Also, I've gotten pulled over twice with my SR. As long as the title reflects that odometer does not read true milage when the vehicle is sold, I don't see how it would be "illegal". The CEL is in the same spot as a USDM cluster IIRC.

Experiences? I had just bought a CA swapped coupe and when we got on the freeway some IC piping came loose (we didn't know till later). Anyway, we were on the shoulder, hood open, looking for what was wrong. CHP came by, came right in front of the engine bay, asked us if we were ok, then pushed us to the next offramp. Never said a word about the engine.
Then again, I have NEVER seen a hood popped till a few days ago. Some white EG6 on the side of the 5N near Irvine had his hood popped. Tripped me out.

Not all cops are dicks. Their not just going to try and harass you. He didn't pull you over either he probably just thought you guys needed help and he didn't pull you over. If you have the stock SMIC with all the OEM piping that would also be another reason why he wouldn't suspect anything.

well i went to the reff today at chaffey college in rancho. they seemed really nice. I passed the visual. but I have to go back for smog and decibal. but before that I need to change out my cat. because I cheated smog due to it not being able to pass. there also gonna check the timing and all that. and does anybody know where the check engine light on a 180sx cluster is. because they're gonna check that too. thanks
Just say it's a CA model 240sx. They don't come with CE lights I believe. My 240 didn't have one and I had issues getting it smogged until I found proof of it and took it to the shop.

Yes, but not because it reads in kilometers - because it means you pulled your original cluster, and your mileage isn't being reported accurately anymore. There's a spot on your title that reflects that, once you get cited for it.
