A Denver TV station is reporting authorities may have foiled an assassination plot against Barack Obama, and there's talk the suspects may be members of a white supremacy group.

KUSA-TV claims three men are in custody after a routine traffic stop in Aurora (near Denver) turned up two rifles, high-powered scopes, ammo and meth. The man in the car led authorities to a hotel where another suspect jumped out of a fourth floor window in an attempt to escape.

A third guy was busted at another hotel but the info on him is sketchy.

The arrests went down yesterday. The TV station says sources said "Two of the men had tattoos and jewelry popular with white supremacists."

The mugshot inset in the photo is of one of the suspects, Tharin Gartrell.

Again, read the article, it all says "speculation" and even the authorities have said it's still by no means a credible scenario that they were attempting, or if so, even capable of carrying out, an assassination.

I don't really buy this being a serious assassination attempt, and/or some white supremest extremist group effort. from the article, it just so seems that they were just a group of random hick petty criminals who happened to have a hunting rifle, a scope, and some drugs. coincidently at least one of them also happened to have a swastika ring. Maybe another got drunk/high, and babbled something about wanting to kill obama. So what? I hear ppl say they want to kill bush every now and then. I take it with a dose of skepticism.

Article also interviewed an officer who didn't think the accused would have had the capability of carrying out the assassination.

"A fourth federal official familiar with the investigation said an assassination attempt was unlikely."
"The capability and their opportunity and what they had for their weaponry -- I don't see that they would have been able to carry it out," the official said on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing."

These guys are obviously not professionals and pose little threat, even if they were serious to begin with.

Gartrell allegedly told investigators about hearing Adolf, Johnson and Adolf's girlfriend talk about assassinating Obama and referencing a "shooting on grassy knoll."

Johnson, meanwhile, told investigators that Gartrell was present in Denver to assist Adolf in a plot against Obama.
