Electric fans stopped working

So I just got my car done and back from the dyno the other week and everything seemed to be going ok besides the rear main leaking and the clutch slipping.

Then my fans stopped working. Must of been a power surge and the wires at the relay melted(which is really cool).

So my question now is, how it should really go back together. I only need 1 relay(I wanna switch to a 2 relay setup) cuz I would like to drive my car across town to the construction shop I work at so I can work on my car.

I have 2 fuses on the fan sides.

The wire that melted was right off the battery to the relay.

I KNOW NOTHING about this shit but something says maybe there should of been a 30a fuse where the wire melted.


If anybody wants to connect the dots for me and explain this stuff, that would be sweet.

What gauge wire was it that melted? It was probably not a big enough wire for the fans. All a relay does is allow you to power on a circuit with large gauge wire, using smaller gauge wires.

As far as calculating the correct size of fuse/ relay/ wire to use, that's more complicated. The size of wire you need is dependent on the fans, as well as the length of the wire. The same goes for the fuses.

Since you're wanting to convert to a 2 relay setup, are you wanting to be able to switch on each fan individually?

I am pretty sure the gauge is between 10-12. What is needed?

It was the wire going from the relay to the fans that was melted.

I guess going to a 2 relay setup isn't want I want to do.

Well, my fans each have a 14awg wire for the power, and a 14awg for the ground. But again, it's dependent on your setup.

I have dual flexalite fans and my thermostate burned up aswell. I ended up just running a fuse to a toggle to turn them on and off. I know it sucks but i don't feel like buying another thermostat to have it do the same thing.

When wires burn up there is usually a reason. If you had a fuse it would have just blown it, and a blown fuse usually means something is wrong, Check all your grounds and also makes sure you wires are the correct size.
