In middle school, I remember our history teacher asking that, and almost everyone said Ford. People were surprised to learn it was Karl Benz.

i knew...benz wagen was even on gt4.
that thing had 5hp and it couldn't even climb the smallest hill.

Ford was the first to mass produce the car (Model-T) I remember Top Gear did a special on something like this.

Ford started the assembly line, he did not invent the car. Thought everyone knew that by now

^actually oldsmobile invented the assmbly line, but Ford made it efficient, and thusly became known for it.

Eh...some people don't follow automotive history. I learned this ages ago when I was a little kid though.

I knew that from childhood as well. I got this one car book around the time I was in kindergarten.

I'm sure this comes off sounding asshole-ish, but I'd have guessed that most people on a car-related board would know a fair bit about the history of the automobile. I have a ton of auto history books at home, including some oddities like a history of Detroit concept cars and even a history of Edsel!
I guess in all fairness though, I'm a fan of a lot of things wherein I don't really know a ton about the origins. I love watching the NFL, but I couldn't tell you a fucking thing about the origins of the game or the league.
