What films have you found that were low-key but high in entertainment value and are noteworthy?

No matter how old, list your rare movies.

I just went out and bought Death Trance. A Japanese film that came out in 2001. Story was interesting, has a lot of high points. Mainly the costume design. Which kept me watching more than the fight scenes. This movie had samurais, monks, and mercenaries with gun-swords! One to see.

Another is the Daywatch/Nightwatch series. A pair of eastern european films about vampires. Also entertaining.

An old movie I found scrounging at Best Buy, King of New York, with Christoper Walken. Christopher Walken. Nuff said.

Machine Girl. Japanese film about a girl with a machine gun for an arm. That line alone got me hooked! Funny is an understatement, this film is hilarious in its over the top gore!

I usually dig for movies like this, since I know I would rarely see em on TV or whatever. I usually also get Kung Fu movies but they started to seem repetitive. But there are some good ones out there.

i was expecting something different from this thread, but here

They Live - roddy piper of WWF fame in a surprisingly awesome scifi where aliens run the planet through subliminal messages

Freaks - ancient movie about a freak show

Metropolis - the first scifi. there's a restored version by Kino Video, but i honestly prefer the dirty old version you can get in a dollar bin. it's silent, play NIN over it and it rules.

Silent Night Deadly Night - the best christmas horror

Chinese Super Ninjas - or anything from like '80-'90 with "ninja" in the title.

Equilibrium (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238380/) 2002 film which was overshadowed by a Matrix release, and thus did poorly at the box office. If it had been released at a better time and had more advertising, it would've done great.

I only discovered it last year.

alright, idk how to define 'rare' but these are some of my favs not everyone knows about. many of the directors are fairly renowned and/or controversial though.

un chien andalou
jason & the argonauts
ikiru
rashomon (simpler version of citizen kane imo)
sunset blvd (best film noir imo)
pierrot le fou
aguirre, wrath of god (directed by werner herzog, starring klaus kinski)
easy rider
la belle de jour
le samourai (with alain delon!)
pink flamingos
dolemite
cannibal holocaust (one of the most brutal exploitation films imo, very realistic)
the thing
flash gordon (80's remake)
eraserhead
evil dead 2
salaam bombay
the mole (alejandro jodorwoski)
stanger than paradise
hard boiled (ties with 'city of god' to be my fav action movie)
redneck zombies
in the mood for love
ricky-o
bad taste
braindead
the running man (verohoven/schwarzenner camp classic)
cemetery man
hard 8
infernal affairs
man bites dog
sunshine

sure there's a lot more, but thats all i can think of right now.

great film no doubt, but questionably rare. Christopher Nolan (dark night 1 & 2) directed it, starring guy pierce in possibly his most fun role. some of you are actually going to hate me for saying this but I actually think this was Nolan's best work to date. liked it more than dark night 2. really did not care for dark night 1 so much.

Hardly anyone I know has seen this movie when I mention it.

I've seen it.

I think Christian Bale is the best, most underrated actor around. He was great all the way back in Empire of the Sun. I can't stand the 'Batman voice' thing, but I understand that it's part of the role.

Heath Ledger outshined him in Dark Knight though.

The original "Deathrace 2000" I mean come on its got Sylvester Stalone and David Caradine and the lines in the movie are just f#cking hilarious and Sylvester Stalone punches some girl in the face. The movie itself is terrible and the plot is pretty bad but seeing Sylvester Stalone in one of his first movies (1975) and the lines... omg u'll be quoting this movie left and right b/c the lines are priceless.

I don't think anyone ever mentioned Micheal Jackson's "Moonwalker"... not only does it have Micheal Jackson acting creepy around children (turning into a giant power rangers looking robot and shit) it has almost all of his music videos and it has Danny Devito beating up children and giving them drugs. Did I mention it sucks hairy balls but its absof#ckinglutly hilarious.

Finally... "Zardoz"; this is one of Sean Connery's first movies (1975) and its just plain BAD. It's got a young Connery running around the whole time in a bandolier wearing knee high boots and a banana hammock while carrying a six shooter. Its almost impossible to watch the whole thing b/c its just terrible but the first 10 minutes or so of the movie will have you wtfing and pissing your pants laughing the whole time.

Did I mention that I drink ALOT?

Great but far from rare.

'rare' here in this thread is an absolutely ambiguous term. I could say Iron Man is a rare film, and by definition (or lack thereof), i'd be 100% correct.
