Army Moves Ahead With Mobile Laser Cannon | Danger Room from Wired.com (http://blog.wired.com/defense/2008/08/army-moves-ahea.html)

The Army is moving ahead with plans to mount a laser cannon on a massive, 35-ton-plus truck. The service just handed Boeing a $36 million contract to "continue developing a truck-mounted, high-energy laser weapon system (http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2008/q3/080819a_nr.html) that will destroy rockets, artillery shells and mortar rounds," according to a company statement.
Low power demonstrations are scheduled for 2010, with battlefield-strength laser tests to follow in 2013.
About a year ago, the Army asked Boeing and Northrop Grumman (http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/military_law/4274651.html) to work up preliminary designs for the HEL beam control system (http://blog.wired.com/defense/2007/07/monster-truck-g.html) -- and promised to choose a winning model by 2009. So the program appears to be on track. And it's one of a number of energy weapon projects that have been picking up steam, after decades of unfulfilled promise. Relatively easy-to-deploy electric lasers have just about worked their way up to weapons-grade (http://www.noahshachtman.com/archives/003030.html). Boeing recently test-fired the real-life ray gun on its Advanced Tactical Laser (http://blog.wired.com/defense/2008/08/will-new-laser.html) -- a blaster-equipped gunship. Raytheon has worked up a prototype (http://blog.wired.com/defense/2008/07/despite-what-yo.html#more) of its Phalanx mortar-shooter (http://noahshachtman.com/archives/001623.html) that uses fiber lasers, instead of traditional ammo, to knock down targets. Even the eternally-delayed Airborne Laser (http://blog.wired.com/defense/2008/04/video-laser-jet.html) -- a modified 747, designed to zap ballistic missiles -- may finally get a long-awaited flight test.

Now is its only about time until we start carrying around light sabers.

I remember reading an article on directed energy weapons for the F-35. Sounds pretty ridiculous, 4 second bursts, ability to shoot down all incoming fighters, missiles, etc. Supposedly it could be effective enough to replace stealth technology.

Although, the more I read about it, the more it seems like one of those military technologies that is going to cost a hundred billion dollars and end up with no real achievements.

Why would you cut toast? Wouldn't you be cutting bread for the end product to be toast? :loco: lol jking, im an :mrmeph:.

Back on subject, how much is the government spending on education? Oh wait, not nearly enough. The reason we have to build all these state of the art weapons is because every other fucking country hates us and wants us gone. Right? :tweak: If we didn't stick our nose in every other countries' matters than we wouldn't need to be spending trillions on war and weapons. Fucking dumb if you ask me. Shit should go back to fist fighting :keke:

the government spends WAAAAY too much on STUPID SHIT that has nothing to do with either education OR the military. i'd like to see all the RETARDED shit cut out, and maybe even more money on defense.
and all the other countries are just player hatin, because we're alpha bro

Like it says in the article, it's just theory at this point. There was supposed to be a test in 2002, it never happened and now it's pushed back to 2009. Kinda like our missile shield and the star wars program, it's right around the corner...indefinitely.

All the other countries aren't player hatin and you know it, most countries do not like americans.
