95 motor in a 89.
bought it non running, replaced the plugs, restabbed dist, fired right up.
idled at 2000.

found missing intake bolt. missing iacv bolt.
replaced all gaskets and blocked off EGR. Cleaned out intake manifolds and IACV with carb cleaner.
removed coolant lines and unneeded vacuum lines on intake manifold.

still idles at 2000. seems like its smoother, but still at 2000.

iacv screw is all the way in. TB looked shut when i had it off.

im gonna check the tb stop screw and TPS tomorrow.

is there anything else i should be checking? im kinda at a loss here really.

check your throttle body

also, i was cranking trying to get it started and the oil cap was off for some reason.
there was like some smoke coming out. and lingering coming out still while i was putting plugs in.

this is bad, yase?

having the oil cap off is like a huge vacuum leak...btw.

According to the fsm the s14 intake manifold has an idle adjustment screw right above the two heater hoses. It sits almost flush and is really easy to miss but it's there. If you can find a pdf of the pages you'll see what I am talking about.

Sounds a lot like your throttle cables are too tight. I'd check this first then check the idle screw.

adjust the idle screw?

and don't use carb cleaner to clean you IACV, use intake cleaner

also re timed at TDC? gotta make sure of that re stabbing sensor wont just fix that.

timed at tdc perfect. fucked with that forever before i realized i had it 180 out.
throttle cable has plenty of slack, isnt even tightened down 100% from putting the intakes back on.

i did not know about the other idle screw, and didnt see it when it was all apart. ill check it out.

not saying you didnt do it right, but you did have the CAS off right? and the valve cover off to make sure cams are pointing the right way. and 15 degree ( first notch on the main crank pulley ) because this happened to me before. then you gotta check the two dots are aligned once you put the CAS back in.

if that doesnt help then its most likely a vacuum.

yeah id check your timing first. Then play with iacv etc etc. good luck

i saw the lobe through the oil fill hole. thats why the cap was off.
i thought i had it right before this, but it was 180 off and i read to look for the lobe then stab it and i got it right this time.

the thing is. when i advance the timing on the dist, it idles even higher but will rev fine when accelerated.
and when i turn the dist the other way the idle goes down, but the car will not rev, just goes bleehhhhhh and bogs.
so i'm assuming the timing is close to right when the engine will actually rev nicely.
i cant zero in the timing because it has to be at a normal idle to put a gun on it...

could the timing being a litttttle bit off put the idle up to 2000+? I dunno.
and what do you mean by two dots?

there are no vacuum leaks. i just replaced every gasket on the intake manifold and did a proper egr blockoff and vacuum line and coolant line removal, it made no change on the idle. im gonna test for vacuum leaks anyways i guess.

also, the previous owner took out the carbon canister thing and looks like he crimped the tank vent line. i have a suspicion that its not supposed to be blocked. should i open it up or leave it shut?

EDIT. the screw shown in the fsm is the one on the iiacv and is adjusted all the way in. still 2k idle.

haha. shouldve clarified.

i messed with the throttle stop and got it to come down. i guess the plate wasnt shut as much as i thought it was.

thanks for all the help guys.

now to bleed the coolant.
