View Full Version : Taillight lens sealant?

What kind of sealant should I use to hold my taillight lenses on? I had them open from one side and then I just pressed them back on, and now they have gaps at the top, through which dirt gets in them, and I also had a couple spiders making webs inside my taillights.
I'd prefer for the sealant to be clear if possible, but if there isn't anything clear I'll pick up whatever you guys recommend. I'm really not too worried about it as it's not a big deal to me, although next time I have to go to a hardware store I might as well pick something up.
DIY taillight gurus, please let me know what you would use.
Thanks for any tips.

butyl rubber for the inside. invisible goop if you have cracks on the outside. goop does yellow a bit though.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll probably try the Autozone goop, and if that doesn't work out, I'll try the rubber sealer.

Wait, do you mean lens to body or lens to lens? The butyl is for lens to metal.

Would this be the same stuff they would use to seal the rear quarter windwows, since the window housing is rubber and it would be contacting metal?

Not sure why you need something invisible. you seal the area between metal and plastic.

you can see my tail lights in this picture. someone used black silicone to seal it and you can see it bulging out. this wont be visible from outside. dont try to close cracks from outside. i was thinking of something else with my original answer.
