View Full Version : turn signals and power windows/locks don't work- any ideas why?

So basically the power windows for both driver side and passenger sides do not work at all. A mechanic I know suggested it was the window relay, but I would like to see if it could be anything else. Additionally, the power locks do not operate either. Are the two issues related?
Furthermore, the turn signals do not operate. The fuse and the bulbs are fine; the hazards lights even work. We're thinking it's some sort of wiring problem, but perhaps someone here can shed some light on that.
Thanks

Check all of your fuses first. Pull out each fuse and use a multimeter to measure continuity across both blades of the fuse.

the ignition/power window relay is brown and located by internal fuses. the turn signal might be the turn signal switch/stalk

And if there is a close JY, it doesnt hurt to just grab a new relay for the windows. there small and can be free ;)

IDK what it is with s13's... They have some wierd wiring issues.
My brake lights were controlled by my defroster. They wouldnt work unless the defroster was on.
idk about the s14.

I respectfully disagree. The body harness on S13s are amazingly simple, or at least simple for me.
Most of the wiring problems I've seen come from improper modification without knowing basic electronics.

I don't mean to steal the thread, but did you modify something in your car?
Brake lights are simple. Battery power - fuse - switch - lights. Simple.

when i got my S13, the inside fuse box was half melted. hardly anything worked.
Had to wire a whole new JY one up.
how bout rust on your car, (they salt the roads there right??) maybe something rusted through??

the car is a '89 hatch. the fuse box, and the fuse seemed to be in good order (visually at least). There is rust, but it's mostly surface rust. The frame of the car is in decent shape for a Canadian car. I'll check some of the things you guys suggested.

I had found a wire on mine that had melted through in the engine bay, shorted against the body and caused the fuse box meltdown.
So just trace the wiring as best you can and maybe you will come across whats cause the issue.

haha sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I guess I should add some closure.
So both problems were fixed. The lights were problematic because the relay on the hazard light button was stuck in the on position, causing a sort of open loop, preventing the electric signal from the turn signals from going through. The button/relay was replaced and everything was A-OK.
The windows weren't working because the fuse was missing period (guy who sold us the car probably took it before we went to pick the car up, since the window motors worked before). After replacing the fuse, the window motors were turning, except the driver side window wouldn't go down. We took out the entire window rack and discovered that the gear that physically moves the window up wasn't catching. The racks were replaced on both sides and now we have working power windows!
