as we all know, the instrument panels in the s13 are less than bright. so the question comes up- what kind of bulbs are used to backlight the guages? could i possibly replace them with some hyperwhite bulbs? i'm tired of my dull, barely-able-to-read dash, but i don't much appreciate indiglo guages... so what am i to do?

The instrument cluster is lighted by 3 194 type bulbs.

I replaced bulb with 6 Polarg super white bulbs. 194 type. Cost me 33 bucks total(3 pairs). These are high quality bulbs. It won't fade color like other cheap bulb. Taking out the gauge was a little pain and it takes time. It's about 2 times brighter than stock. I also hated dim stock light so I changed it. I also replaced a hazard light and cruise control switch bulb. You can try blue, red, or green colored bulb. Here is a pic of mine.

194 bulb is commonly used for instrument panel. I'm pretty sure 98 240 will use same bulb. However, Hazard or defroster switch light use very small miniature bulbs. Auto part store doesn't sell these. But you can buy similiar one at the RadioShack. I don't think you don't have to change them as long as it works. Just buy an instrument bulb or you can try indiglo gauges. I also changed interior light to RAZO bulb. They are very bright.
