hey guys i was wondering if any of you were musicians. I've been playing the saxophone for 12 years and love playing jazz. I have played guitar for 7 years as well as the piano. I have sung in a band a couple times. I have played drums for a couple of years and love recording music. So just wondering what instruments you guys play, what style, and how long.

i've been playing drums for about 3-4 years. I play at my church and the occasional jam sessions. At church its all contemporary and gospel stuff. When i jam, it depends on who i'm playing with. Most times its jazz/funk/r&b stuff, buuuuut i have a soft spot for rock/metal/punk. I just try to be as diverse as possible cuz as a drummer you never know who you'll have to sit in with. I tought myself initially by ear, but last fall i decided to take lessons to make sure i didnt fall into any bad habits. I know 3-4 years isnt a super long time, but i learn VERY fast. I'm not super amazing, but i wouldnt say i totally suck either. lol
I also sing. Honestly, I'm a singer first and drummer second. I've been singing for almost 8 years now. Mostly r&b/gospel stuff, but i've done some punk/alternative stuff too. I've never had lessons cuz its too damn expensive but i have a lot of friends who record and are professional musicians and they've given me pointers on breathing techniques and vocal control. I've never seriously recorded before, but just recently i was approached to do some work for some rappers. Basic chorus, hook, bridge type shit. Should be fun!
In case it isnt painfully obvious, music is a HUGE part of my life. Cool thread!

Not really much of a musician, more of a singer.
Music is also a huge part of my life.

I play the drums. I love playing anything from death metal to ambient jam stuff. I like to diversify and always learn from different styles.
http://a709.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/80/l_5a741a413c46f7a9e8976dfc93b536dc.jpg
I also sing and write. I really wish I could play the guitar but I just don't have the resolve or time right now to really learn, and drumming and singing at the same time sucks. So it's usually one or the other.

I've been playing the guitar and bass for almost 15yrs now. Started playing the piano first, but never really got into it. Although it thought me basic music theory and finger movement. I usually play everything from classical to regular rock. I usually play Dream Theater stuff and music from the members of the G3 band. Right now I'm trying to master the "Crossroad battle solo"....pretty hard shit.

Hey you guys, when I made a thread about whos a guitarist out there in zilvia. Most of you told me to learn the scales and know how to use them... I learned lots of scales from this site Guitar Scales @ Chordbook.Com (http://www.chordbook.com/guitarscales.php) but I don't know how to use them?

Been playing the drums since I was a kid. I stopped in 2003 because I had no place to store my set anymore. Just recently I pulled it back out and realized it was too small for me. But I play all the time over at my friends house. We just do freestyle type jam sessions. We just go with the flow, its tons of fun.
I dunno what kind of style I really play. I tend to find myself kind of playing stuff like Alex Rodriguez from Saosin...just not as gangster haha. Dude is amazing.

for the record, the iron cobra sucks. Its a piece of shit. Yeah, its super adjustable, but those adjustment points are ALWAYS coming loose. I'm getting rid of mine if one of you guys wants to buy it. I keep all my stuff in tip top shape so no worries there. I just dont like it. Go with DW or Pearl, IMHO.
The Pearl Eliminator...now THATS a pedal.
Oh and Saosin isnt metal nor are they emo. Emo is gay shit that talks about your heart being black and writing poems about losing your girlfriend in 8th grade. Fuck all that noise. Metal has sooooo many different sub genres that its not worth me even trying to explain.
Alex Rodriguez of Saosin is a good drummer though. He's one of my influences. Everybody has they're preferences though. Personally, i think August Burns Red type stuff is annoyingly repetitive. 16th notes on your double pedal, ride the china, snare, tom fill, repeat. Its really not that complicated. Its just fast. If thats your definition of a good drummer then you're severely mistaken.
Dont get me wrong, i like some metal, but it can be REALLY formulaic at times.
ESmorz
08-18-2008, 02:32 AM
it can be REALLY formulaic at times.
That's the point of August Burns Red
They are math metal.
:keke:
Playing it, is as easy as laying out the formula.
I particularly love jamming to funky jazz type stuff, but like I said in my town people who play that are either out there weirdos or like 25... I wish I could play RX Bandits type stuff in a band. However I cant seem to find anyone to fill band slots.

Woah woah woah...don't put words in my mouth. I never said he was my favorite drummer ever. I said he is an amazing drummer...and I have a tendency to play similar to his style.
I couldn't even name anyone as my "Idol" because there are so many styles to drumming, and limiting yourself to one genre is about the dumbest fucking thing you can do.

Haha that's a good attitude to have.
Especially if you play any type of heavy music. Alot of the younger drummers I know focus on metal only, and it shows in their playing. They sound just like everyone else.

I've noticed a lot of the kids who start out and only play metal, have troubles staying in tempo, and have trouble playing anything other than metal. I'd much rather be decent at many genres, than the best in just one.
That's whats so great about music...the variety.

I have a pretty empty garage, it's where we always have band practices. Room for like 8 people and all the equipment.
I used to be able to scream. Gutturals and highs. Then one day about a year ago I was jammin with my band and were doing a zao cover and mid scream I coughed up some weird loogy and haven't been able to do it since, unless it's just like a hardcore yell. I also haven't been able to hit as high a falsetto since then either.

i couldnt really get comfortable with the zildjian dips and i'm not really big on nylon tips either. I'm into those Vater Fusion sticks or some good ol Vic Firth 5B's. At church i usually play with 7A's cuz i have to play so much softer.
Screaming sounds cool, but i just dont get it. Like i know how to breathe when i sing and what not, but screaming is like something completely foreign to me. Like you, i can do the occasional hardcore yell, but trying to do say a whole Underoath song or something is not happening.

yeah my other guitarist is really into set your goals
we both drive and we're willing to meet up at a studio to jam distance isn't really the issue i guess i'm just looking for a drummer with similar taste in music thats as motivated as i am to get back onto the music scene
i know the whole ropes of being in a band merch, recording and booking shows is pretty much second nature to me

i left the band ,got a gf but still miss it
and i guess they are still a band as well
im gonna have to start up a band again since i've always wanted to be in a band like set your goals/ day to remember/ four year strong / forever the sickest kids basically bands with dbl bass lol

we should jam sometime guys, all of us, haha. ive been playin drums for like 5 years or so. i play a lot at my church. i have a gretsch catalina club mod. they sound pretty good. i love pro mark 2bs, & 5bs. i hate all the other sticks ive played with. at my church is cool, we play a lot of hillsong united. (every one on the worship team is like 23 and under). so we play pretty loud. its fun. ive also been playin guitar since i was like 12, and i play bass in a local band right now, so im always busy with music. i love it.

ive noticed there are a lot of drummers here. i also play drums but i am self taught been behind the set for 4 years now and ill try and play anything. metal is prety easy (the concept of it) andi love to jam with a buddy of mine who is a phenom guitarist. i also write songs and dabble with the harmonica, sax clarinet and guitar/bass.
