Should I look for the stock front and rear speakers for my 91 240, or should I just buy some new ones?

If I was to buy new speakers they wouldnt be expensive (nothing over $100).

I say go w/ aftermarket; stock speakers suck and there are lots of options for less than $100.
Check:

Sounddomain (http://www.sounddomain.com)

The Zeb (http://www.thezeb.com)

stay away from the really cheap online stores since they are often scams, I've bought from both above companies and wouldn't go elsewhere.

there's some clarion 4x6 plate speakers on ebay for like 75 a pair... those are some nice speakers. don't bother getting big speakers in some attempt to gte bass, it just won't work- just replace the coaxial 4x6's with plates and get subs...

Buy new ones. Look on crutchfield to compare the speakers but BUY THEM SOMEWHERE ELSE. I speak from experience....

I use CDT but JL has a pretty solid rep, much better than Clarion for drivers; the zeb has a great deal wish I saw it before I sold my left nut for my CDTs:

JLs on sale... (http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/specials_speakers.html)

i was lazy and asked my boys to but my cheap ass bass blockers on my fronts, and now the right speaker is ****ED!

I would look into stores like best buy and Circuit City. At least there they know what they are talking about and you can get a good warranty in case something happens. Also get a brand that you've heard of. You'll get nothing but crap when you go with a speeker called Maxor or some thing like that.

I personally am a Pioneer kinda guy. I have their TS6963 6x9 in boxes on my rear seats, provide a great deal of sound but not enough.... anyone have suggestions for 69s with great bass responce with low distortion?

Be careful with plate speakers. They sound better, but I don't think you'll get any to fit up front. In the rear, mebbe. I had to trim the plate on my Kappas to get them to fit, and up front was hopeless. If you have some mechanical skill, you can easilly make some baffles to fit 6.5" speakers using some 1/4" plywood or mdf. If you aren't as big into sound and just want to replace the factory speakers, don't bother trying to find stock speakers. Get some cheaper coaxial speakers (can prolly find something for $40-$50 a pair, 4x6" in all four locations). The factory amps only put out 5-10 watts rms, you will lose your bass if you get a higher powered speaker.

for get about nig riggin some speakers in the back to save a few bucks. Spend a little more money so you can get speakers that fit right and sound good

Well, for most of us, the phrase would be "jury-rigging" or "jerry-rigging"...but for some of us still living in the Confederate States, "nigger-rigging" is a term used when stating that something is "hand-crafted and of low quality."

Having said that, I'd like to say Shame On You for saying that on the internet. Keep your bigotry to yourself, guy.

me growing up in southwest VA, i've grown up hearing the terms"niger rigging", but me having close friends that are black, i use the words "Afro-engineering." if thats offensive to anybody tell me, but my black friends think its hillarious...but you never know. but anywho... back to the topic. i'd say go with infinity kappa plates or clarion plates. Justin a.k.a JDM-er has the infinity regulars, and they sound f'ing awesome. so really man, don't be cheap. you'll regret it in the long run.

obscene comments aside, i don't see how you could come to the conclusion the 4x6 speakers sound better than 6.5's or anything else one could fit in the stock speaker positions. 4x6 speakers are crap. i have a pair of rockford 6.5's i was oging to mount up front, but the magnets are too big... what oversized speakers have you guys used up front? i think i'm just going to rig up the plates...
oh, and for those who don't know, and don't concern themselves much with a 100% picture-perfect install: if your screw holes don't line up, just hold everything in place with strips of Dynamat :D

The factory sound system wasn't exactly engineered with ideal sound in mind, "good enough" was good enough for Nissan. Otherwise, there wouldn't be five watt 4x6's there to begin with :P

The 6.5" speakers I installed in my newer s13 sound much much better than the 4x6" I upgraded in my old one. Basically, they didn't "fit right" or "sound good" to begin with :P

Again, I can't emphasize enough to be careful with plate speakers, it will be difficult to get them to fit up front.

This topic has been beat to death..... Get some decent quality 6.5" coax or components and make a simple plate out of 1/2" MDF, plywood, etc. to bolt in place of the factory 4x6 housing. Make sure you use some sort of baffle behind the speaker to protect againts water.
