I started smoking at the age of 18 and i've been smoking for 6 years. i've tried to quit before several times and the longest that i lasted was for a month or 2. but this time i'm nearing on my one year sept. 15th :D
if you're finding it difficult i'd suggest that you can try the patches or the gum.
it's different for everyone so you need to find what it is that will help you stay away from cigarettes. For me, when i quit smoking i started it gradually. I used to smoke a pack a day, then cut down to 15 down to 10 and less and less till i got to 1 and then decided i didn't need it anymore and never touched a cigarette since.
you can try that, but really, the only time a person quits for good is if he/she really wants to.
good luck to you :)

My friend had a smoking problem before too. After his son was born, he decided to quit smoking.
What I noticed was that he didnt quit right away, he just lowered his consumption of cigarettes a day. He used to smoke close to 2 Packs a day about a year ago,for the past 3-4 months, he has not touched a single cigarette.
I guess with lowering the consumption of cigarettes mixed in with some good self-control, you can quit the habit.
Also, I hear gum helps too.

Quitters never win... The just live longer. Get to the finish line first! lol.
Nah, ive been smoking for 3 years. One of the worse decisions of my life, I swear to god. 2 packs a day, at 3.50 a pack... Over 3 years thats enough to buy a nice used car.
I tried quitting a few times, but I got smart. Right now, Im just cutting back, slowly adjusting to 3/4 a pack a day, then 1/2 a pack a day, then a few a day, which will take the longest. But after you get used to no nicotine, its not too bad. The occasional "i'll kill a baby for a smoke" cravings are the worst though. When you wake up at 3 in the morning in a cold sweat craving a smoke, its time to quit. Thats what motivated me.

Take it 1 step a day man. You GOTTA look at it that way. Youre not quitting overnight. Try lowering comsumption by a few a day. Keep your hands busy, buy a rubix cube. And always carry gum. That oral fixation will make you forget about smoking, and doing something with your hands will help too.
Also, don't hang with people that fucking smooke. All they do is bring you down with shit like "Wanna smoke?" and "Lets fucking burn and tar the fuck outta our lungs man." Just seeing it will spark that chemical dependancy cigs give off.
On a sidenote, i wanted to screen print a No Smoking sign on rags that people could carry around. Smoking = FAIL.

smoked for 2 years. finally said "screw it". got tired of the dry mouth, always thirsty, clothes smelling like ass, etc. just dont think about it. chug some water. chomp on some tooth picks. in the beginning try not to hang around people that smoke, or you'll be tempted.
its hard but....... VERY possible. strong will brotha!

though whenever I am trying to get myself not to do somethin, I rationalize it out in my head of why I shouldnt do it which talks down the wanting to do it. Perhaps this will work for you.

It's just a matter of being mentally ready to quit. I started smoking during my first tour in Afghanistan because well... That's what you do when you're deployed.
Got up to smoking about a pack a day once I was home but by that point it was just a habit. I would wake up in the morning and just smoke a cigarette. Tried quitting, would last a day or two, then I'd be like fuck this I wanna smoke. I was a hardcore athlete in college and shit so I still work out a lot and I would literally go run 3 miles or do an insane Crossfit workout and then come right out of the gym and have a smoke. Automatic.
Then one day I was driving my car... I lit up a smoke like always, then just decided that I wasnt really enjoying it and it was doing nothing for me. So I tossed it out the window, threw away the rest of my pack, and havent touched a cigarette since. That was almost a year ago.
So I think it was just a matter of reaching that point where I was mentally prepared to let go of the habit. The first 3-4 days were kinda hard because I was having nicotine cravings but once it all gets out of your system its all just a mental game.

Never let anything control your life in one way or the other. Even if you avoid something because you are afraid of it, it is still controlling you. It has to come to the point where you just aren't digging em anymore. Or occasionally you can just have a smoke with a friend on a night out, and not go run out and buy a pack right after.
You can do it friend.
You just have to have faith in yourself.
That's it.

i have interesting theory that alot of people say makes sense but rarely goes with people's situations....hear this out.
when i was in high skool i met tons of kids who bit their nails, i didn't know why but at that age stress is common so i think it's some sort of way to relieve stress. maybe at some point this is how you relieve some stress and when you either are stressed or bored you begin to smoke like many other would bite their nails.
maybe by keeping busy and replacing cigarettes with gum or something that you can put in your mouth every once in a while it will help suppress maybe some of the cravings.maybe replace every other cigarette with a piece of gum until you ease yourself off.......so basically replace cigarettes with something less harmful.

i tried to quit twice, but after 1 or 2 months i was back at about 1 pack a day. when 80% of your colleagues smoke it's kinda hard to quit. the funny thing is, i rarely smoke when i'm at home. i smoke the most at work (if i would have a job), or when hanging out with friends. when i stay at home for a whole weekend i don't smoke even 1 cigarette sometimes. but when i watch TV and see someone smoking or when i just walk down the street and see people smoking, i get the urge to light one up...
right now i'm at about 6-7 cigs a day on weekdays...weekends vary...
I've never smoked a cigarette in my life, and I don't plan on it
I work with a bunch of guys who chew, been offered it, said "No" each time
I recommend you really motivate yourself to quit
you could try cold-turkey or you could lower your consumption steadily until you are at one cig a day and just quit. that gum is just nicotine just like the patch...
the problem I see is people feel the need to smoke during certain parts of the day, maybe you wake up and automatically smoke a cigg, maybe you smoke one each time on the way to work, maybe you smoke when working on your car, it's all a habit

Here's a tip as well.
Imagine how much money you're spending daily on that shitstick you call a cig. 4bucks easy, right?
in 10 days, thats 40bucks, how much fuckign gas could you get with that shit?
Thats like 120 a month, that shit could go to new parts!
At 1440 a YEAR, that would be more to your savings/new car/track days/bike.
But if you wanna spend 1.4K rotting the fuck outta your lungs and becoming less potent, more power to you needle dick.

I NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY PEOPLE SMOKE! I dont smoke and i seriously dont understand why people smoke. Is it because people think its COOL flicking a damn cig and blowing smoke out their mouth.
I'd suggest to look deeply into what smoking a cigarette does to the insides of your body and i guarantee you will quit or be in the process as other people said to lower the cigs you smoke.
I tried it on my friend showing him pics and grossed him out now he rarely smokes

everyone who was a former smoker and said that when you're mentally ready to quit then it will be so much easier for you, is absolutely correct.
after all those short lived attempts at quitting and failing miserably, I knew that i would never touch a cigarette again the moment i felt mentally ready and it worked.

I always come across people who want to quit sooo bad and say they have tried everything and blah blah but yet I see them go to get gas or something and they come back with a fresh pack! haha its so dumb.
If you want to quit then just stop smoking. I mean how hard is it to tell yourself no?
I decided to quit because I use to be able to wake up and run 3 miles with little or no breaks. I started smoking and tried to do that and could barely run 1. I was like "fuck this" and just quit smoking.
Those patches and shit are lame. Limiting yourself could work but then your still smoking. The whole point is to stop, not keep it to a minimum.

Is nicotine really an addictive substance?
The U.S. Surgeon General, the American Psychiatric Association, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse have declared that nicotine is an addictive substance. Nicotine is recognized as the most powerfully addictive drug in common use.
Worldwide, deaths attributable to the nicotine driven behavior of tobacco use are currently about 13,700 people per day (World Health Organization, 2006). Smoking affects the health of nonsmokers, including unborn children. In the U.S., secondhand smoke causes 65,000 deaths annually (CalEPA, 1997).
Studies show that the relapse rate for nicotine use is high. Some NicA members have found that quitting became more difficult the second or third time around. We have found that willpower and determination were insufficient forces to overcome an addiction to nicotine. The program made it possible to get free.
Nicotine Anonymous sees nicotine addiction as a disease that affects the nicotine addict physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Two characteristics of an addiction are compulsive use of a substance and continued use despite adverse consequences. Our use of nicotine has certainly been compulsive and the consequences tend toward fatality.
Too often, even major health problems do not cause the nicotine addict to stop using for any sustained length of time. Heart attacks, cancer, and emphysema are directly linked to tobacco use. Health concerns can generate fear and anxiety such that we return to nicotine to allay these emotions.
There is a physical craving, too, which is very real and very powerful; it is hardly noticed until one tries to do without nicotine for a day or two. At that point, many take to nicotine to quell the craving.
We may become dependent on nicotine to soothe our emotional pains and to fill the emptiness that results from the absence of a spiritual power in our lives. To end our dependence on nicotine we must find something that can fill its role in our lives without killing us. Recovery is our goal in Nicotine Anonymous.
Source: Nicotine Anonymous Publications, Literature and Pamplets- Available in English, Deutsch, Espanol, Francais, Portuguese, Svenska. Literature offering support to those who want to quit cigarettes and quit smoking and stop other forms of tobacco and nic (http://www.nicotine-anonymous.org/pubs_content.php?pub_id=451)
The attitudes expressed by some of those people that say smokers are "weak," that's the kind of attitude that keeps people from quitting, because they become self-defeated.
If the OP wants to quit smoking, exhibit more support, instead of being an asshole.

what my friend did to try to help his brother quit smoking
every time he lit up, my friend would punch his brother...HARD
good method, but sadly it didn't work. I don't think he's so much as a smoker, but a..um..shit forgot the word, but ah! a social smoker lol
--
When I was with my first gf, she smoked. I wanted her to stop, I made her actually cut down and quit because I said I wouldn't kiss her at all if she smoked. I did it once, omg it was ass!
Seriously, get the Gum. Go to wally world and get the most narsty normal flavor/cheap brand. No reason to start enjoying the gum chewing. You will think you are addicted to the gum for awhile, its good shit :) After awhile just have 3 a day, 2 a day, 1 a day, etc.
If you aren't completely against chewing tobacco get something plain like Beechnut and chew it IF you ever get a wicked craving. But I would stay away from it.
It works, me + 2 friends are proof via the same method. Its been 6 months without any nicotine. I had a cig when I went out and was drinking and nearly barfed. Nasty shit.
In the end you have to be committed.

Laser therapy? For smoking? Really?
What the hell do they zap with that thing? I've never even heard of this.
Yup. It's not cheap nor is it too expensive. And yes, everyone I know who had this laser therapy has stopped smoking.
God damn this shit pisses me off. Weak ass people cant quit smoking thats it. I smoked for 2 years and quit the day I wanted to. Wanna know the secret? Here it is.

I just realized it was killing my lung capacity and singing voice.
It was as easy as throwing out my last pack.
Have never even though about habitual smoking again. I might have one once in a blue moon when I am shit faced, but even thats rare.

If the OP wants to quit smoking, exhibit more support, instead of being an asshole.yup....+ reinforcement effects us alot more than we think...hell just look at kids

Thanks?
I apologize if you or anyone else thinks Im being an asshole about this topic but Im really not trying to be. I understand that there are those people who have smoked for like one or two years and quit cold turkey and then there are those who have smoked for 10+ years and cant just put them down. My mom is one of those people who has smoked since she was like my age and she is 34 now. I understand that shes not going to be able to just throw away her pack and never think about cigarettes again.
But what makes me upset is when she complains to my aunts and shit how she is trying to hard not to smoke and how she has tried to cut back and stuff but then everytime I see her she has a pack laying right beside her.
This is where it comes down to how bad you want it. If you cant quit cold turkey then here is what I would suggest.
First try the patches or gum. Buy that shit and try it but DONT buy cigs. Patches and gum still contain nicotine so you somewhat get your cravings by those. Just keep clear of cigarettes as best you can. When you go into the store to pay for gas or something dont look at all the yummy cigs and just tell yourself no.
Also you can start to exercise more and that will get rid of your cravings. Try working out for an hour or jogging your local walking track. I promise you after about an hour of lifting weights or after jogging a mile or two you will NOT want to smoke. Even if you do it will hurt you and taste nasty as hell and you will want to put it out.
My bad if most of you people think I was being harsh or an asshole. I come from a family of die hard smokers and it just pisses me off when they cant quit and dont make any effort to quit.
It all comes down to how bad YOU, the smoker, really wants to quit. If you want to you will take every measure you can to either quit or SEVERLY cut back which will lead to quitting and if its just not that important to you to quit then your just simply not going to.

Fucking on the streets and at the workplace.
I want to live in a world where you can buy a pack of girls for a few bucks and each one is good for one fuck, then you get rid of it, no emotions..........I'd never touch another cigarette in my life.
"Just imagine if girls weren't weirded out by our boners and just like... Wanted to see them and play with them. That's the kind of world I wanna live in one day..."

Go to a hospital and ask to see someone with lung cancer. My girlfriend made me start to quit then seeing a guy I used to party with in the hospital due to lung cancer and loosing the battle. He's only a few years older then me too. Gum and working out has helped.

my dad quit when he had a stroke in 1990
but then he started up again and tried to keep it a secret from me. it was fuckin hilarious how much he failed at hiding it.
sometimes i'd look outside and see him smoking, then he'd see me and throw the cig away real quick, like i wouldn't catch that
and he'd a pack in his shirt pocket, like i couldn't tell what it was
not to mention his breath always smelled like smoke. LOL
eventually he actually did quit. he's been on gum for a long time now.
my mom quit cold turkey at the same time. just stopped like that after smoking for like 40 years.
i went to the body worlds exhibit when it came to san jose, and they actually had a smoker's lungs on display

I'm happy for your parents bro! I love to hear news about people quitting smoking because it's such a big task accomplished decided by the individual to better themselves. A+ for your pops attempts hehe.

i quit smoking awhile ago, cold turkey. only problem is whenever i see someone smoking my first thought is "I WANT." my experience from quitting without any medical help is the want to smoke is still there but i hear many people say using the patch or some psychological help makes cigarettes register in your mind as gross as all hell. try the patch. i didnt read any of the thread, i'm drunk

I work at Kaiser Permanente well known hospital in some states especially in Cali... Anyway I see and meet a lot of smokers. Patches and the gum work for some people. You can try it and see how it goes, you have nothing to loose. Start cutting down on the amount off cigarrettes you smoke. People try to stop completely, but most of the times it doesnt work you'll go right back to smoking. Do it slowly rather than to rush it, that way you get your body and mind use to the amount you smoke. The other thing is like where i work they have smoking sensation programs where smokers that are trying to quit meet 1 day out of the week. I've meet many people that were hardcore smokers that attended these programs or similiar that have stopped smoking completely. And last but not least really think about your health. Majority of the smoker suffer serious chronic diseases lung cancer, throat cancer, teeth problems, heart failure, artery problems, respitory problems, and it goes on. You can do it trust me just. Good luck let us know how it goes.
