New water pump/thermo, running hotter?

I just replaced my water pump and thermostat. Yesterday was a fairly warm day, and during extended freeway driving, I noticed that my temp was higher than prior to changing the thermo/clutch fan/water pump.

It used to run at around 2 1/2~3 notches for temp regardless of the weather outside. But yesterday it was running at the 4th notch. I can upload a pic later when I get home, but is that normal? Seems a bit hot to me :/ Perhaps it has to do with the clutch fan no longer spinning with the engine RPM?

Also, I noticed, when I would return to regular street driving (same day) the temp would drop back down from the 4th notch to the 3rd.

I'm pretty sure I bled it fine, at night, or on colder days, the temp doesn't go over the 3rd notch.

get an aftermarket water temp gauge so you can measure it closer

technically the gauge would read warmer if used a sufficant like WW and water, because there is more contact space on the ECT sensor.

Check if your bleeder bolt is leaking "while" the gauge is reading @ the 4th notch. The pressure might be high enough to seep fluid past the used copper crush washer, and durring cooldown, it draws air in, which WILL cause air pockets.

if you put in straight coolant or a 50/50 mix it is going to run hotter than your previous setup if the coolant/water mix was different. do you know what mix you were previously running?

right now i am running 90% water/10% coolant w/water wetter and mine stays pretty cold. if i were to replace that mixture with 50/50 it would be hotter for sure.

if you just dumped in straight coolant (not even a 50/50 mix) then you need to drain your system and add water because thats not good. water is a much better cooling agent than antifreeze. you do need to add some antifreeze to the mixture though to lube the system and keep your shit from rusting.

thanks for the info. Do I need to drain the whole system and mix the water and coolant prior? Or can I just drain the radiator without draining the block and add water from there?

i usually just pull out the plug in the radiator and let it all drain from there. i pre mix my coolant and water in an empty bucket or empty coolant bottle, if you have any of the mixture left over just keep it on deck for next time.

this is also a good point. when you put it in you did also make sure that the little bleeder nipple or whatever the hell its called on the the thermostat was facing up right?

I put the thermo with the the spring towards the block. The same way I took the old one out. Does It need to be turned a certain way as well?

no if you put it in the same way you should be fine, but did you make sure the little bleeder nipple was on top?

more than likely it is just your collant mixture but we might as well rule out any problems while we can.

I didnt pay attention to the little bleeder thing. I'll check it asap though since I have to drain the system anyways.

Maybe thermostat opens at higher temp? I don't think it'd be that high but eh. Just throwing a thought.

yea as mine. flushed mine and replaced my thermo and clutch fan. temp stays a lil bit higher than usual. 1 and 1/4 from 3rd notch but it ran fine. no prob so far.


btw im using a 2 spd taurus fan with low speed setting with thermo-switch. i dunno if it does matter what my set up is. with 70/30 water/coolant/ 5% water wetter.

The new thermo didn't have a little bleeder nipple dealie thing, but it had a little hole closer to where it opened, so I just pointed that up.

I changed the mixture to 50/50 + water wetter and it runs fine. I drove it under the same conditions, and it's a good bar or so cooler than before (back to 3 bars) Thanks for all the help everyone!

no problem man. in really hot conditions i would recommend running something other than 50/50. i used to live in Chico and it got hot as fuck there so i know San Jose has to be getting pretty hot. the more water the better, but 50/50 is fine for the winter.

I'll keep that in mind when summer rolls around again. San jose rarely gets into the 90s and triple digits, and usually when it's that hot I'm not even driving around. (Bankers hours ftw) But I'll keep it in mind for the next coolant flush.
