I was reading on a couple forums, and due to the CA state debt, the smog refs have been shut down. I don't have a sr20'd car anymore but I guess this is good news for people out tehre that do.

So the smog guy right next door to me just informed me that due to californias huge debt Ca. State Smog Ref's. have been shut down. Now if you get "REF'ed" you take it to ANY basic smog shop. He said he got a letter and this went into effect 2 days ago.http://smogcheck.ca.gov (http://smogcheck.ca.gov/)/

Per the Governor's Executive Order issued on July 31, 2008 concerning the state budget, Referee and Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) Repair Assistance, and Vehicle Retirement services have been suspended until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience. Consumers may call the Department of Consumer Affairs, Consumer Information Center at (800) 952-5210. Also, please check our web site periodically to confirm when both Referee and CAP services will resume.

i think you're misinterpreting the info. the cap program and vehicle retirement have nothing to do with getting a ref ticket. the cap program is for if your car fails smog and you can't afford to fix it, the state will offer financial assistance to help you get it to pass smog. the vehicle retirement program is where they will give you some $ to scrap your vehicle if it fails smog as a gross polluter.

The referee program shutdown is the salient point here.

Another user on here has a current ref ticket and he was told this:

them - "you have to go to a ref station"
him - "uh, but they're currently closed due to the budget cuts"
them - "you'll have to wait then."
him - "but, my court date is for the 11th."
them - "request an extension. that's all you can do."

My buddy is going through this at the moment. Since there are no smog refs open anymore he was prompted to go to his court date tomorrow and let the judge decide where to go from there. The court clerk said there is a good chance the judge might just dismiss the case since there is no way to have his car reffed. But more than likely, it would have to default back to the old law before the ref stations where the car would have to pass smog and have it signed off.

I'll let you guys know what happens to him tomorrow after his court date.

I think its a repost, but this is just breather room for us. Nothing will change, they make too much money getting car enthusiasts so why quit.

Its just a loophole. They can still issue you a ticket.
