anyone around here into these?

i have one of the older gas HPI on road nitro ones that i built, i cant remember the exact name and stuff, but its a 200mm body, 2 spd.

i just recently took all my old stuff out and wanted to get back into them. a lot of cool new stuff out since ive been out of the game. HPI makes a drift specific one now!

i was going to just pick up a yokomo, but i think im going to try and save money and convert mine to rwd and see how that works for drifting maybe? maybe it wont?

anyway i just had a few oddball questions..

1. I have the HPI 200mm, but i want to buy a Yokomo jzx100 body. will it work?
2. Will yokomo wheels work on the HPI cars?

thanks!!

There someone on here that has one that looks very realistic, it also has better wheel fitment then 50% of the real cars on here, haha.

I'd love to buy one of the new yokomo s14 drift cars, but I dont have money for that atm.

2wd is a no-no if you are gonna try to drift. 4wd, shaft driven, electric is what you want to shoot for, you'll be burning up nitro motors in no time trying to drift

The Yoke bodies will fit fine, you'll just have to mount it properly before you paint it up. Tires and wheels with fit as well, they should all have the standard 1/10 touring car hex/hubs.

hmm i thought the HPI drift cars were gas powered? guess ill have to buy a whole new kit. or maybe HPI makes parts i can buy to convert mine?
HPIs drift kit is cheaper, but yokomo just looks cooler.

good to know about the bodies tho!

heres that sick jzx i was talking about made me want to build one. so now im motivated to do it now haha.

I musta threw a few hundred back on it in 05-06 just for the carbon chassis, shock towers, put in a new novak esc and modified motor... springs. inverted hpi super shocks from 96. etc.

I used to have a gas conversion on it from 96

Tried drifting, didnt really like it too much, did it for maybe a week then i put the car up on a shelf because i stripped the gearing when i put in a modified motor.. got the skyline speed tuned gears for it but never put it in, which would give it a lower gear ratio for circuit.. I just love the vintage touring cars for some reason i always check out ebay for ta02 and FF01 *i want one of the front wheel drive chassis for some reason, think its pretty cool for a r/c car because its an odd ball drivetrain for one*

RC Drifting is taking off in a big way.

Rear-Wheel Drive doesn't work, RC cars just don't have enough weight, so with a rear-wheel drive car you wil just 180.

*Almost* any 4WD RC car can be turned into a drifter:

Radio Controlled Drift | Convert You Remote Control Car To D-Spec | Rear Differential (http://www.rcspares.com/drift-rc/How-to-Convert-your-RC-Car-into-Drift-Spec.html)

We currently compete in the D10 nationals, on average we have between 30 and 40 drifters.

I got into RC drifting about a year ago. Originally I was into it because I wanted to have a cool model of a silvia to sit on my desk to keep me focused while I was saving up for my S14. I bought the S14, but I'm still into R/C drifting, it's just fun to drift around any where any time. Also, tires are much cheaper. Here's my S14 replica:

http://www.sparx-web.net/Pictures/S14_One/s14_07.jpg

http://www.sparx-web.net/Pictures/S14_One/s14_08.jpg

I'm working on a more drift styled body right now, more detail and better graphics. It's a good hobby when your laid up in the house for 2 months while my back finishes healing up.

I like these websites:

Unless you're going to drift a nitro car, then get the HPI A-drifts. The T-drifts will just distort from the heat.

a drifts? t drifts? i take it those are tires?

that s14 looks pretty good. i like the m sports hood on it.

i got my car running today. i did a new air cleaner, new batterys, and a new glow plug with some fresh gas too. it ran really nice.

its too hard to control once it gets going fast enough.. its almost pointless to go that fast!!

here is a picture with the body that came with the car

yea.
are the yokomos 190mm then?
i think i could make it work length wise, but a 190 yokomo would be too narrow on a 200mm car.
maybe ill stick to HPI bodies then.

the wheels from yokomo should work i think

HyperTek
08-11-2008, 08:21 PM
i think all rims are interchangeable but some have offset to em like 3mm etc *i dont know if that means they are negative 3mm or what*..

my local hobby store doesnt have all that cool stuff *Hobby People kinda sucks if you have anything outside of a typical hpi*...

my old tamiya is 187mm =( . 190mm bodies makes the wheels sunken... custom wheels would take care of it. hence why i tried pvc pipe and made em wide for a dish look.

!Zar!
08-11-2008, 09:16 PM
Yeah, you can use pvc/abs.

But it's too slick and you won't have much control.

For electric cars Hpi T-Drifts work well.

For nitro Hpi A-Drifts work well.

Yokomo has different offsets so you can run a 200mm body on a 190 car and still have wheels that fit.

Traxxas as well as a few other companies sell hex spacers that you can put on your wheels to lower the offset.

A good start is 5mm right height; same as racing.

One way up front and a spool in back.

springs really depend on the car and drive feel.

Alot of the drifters like the rear diff locked and front normally left alone. Travel/clearance is more of a personal driving style thing(some peope run low and others high). As far as springs, you generally want soft springs all around. For my belt HPI Sprint 2 I run soft springs up front, and slightly stiffer springs in the back. Hope that helps lol.

Tamiya, Yokomo, HPI/Hot Bodies, and Losi make good cars. HPI/Hot Bodies are the easiest to get replacement parts for, and Hot Bodies have a lot of aftermarket parts available. Tamiya has an insane amount of aftermarket parts available for most of the chassis. Yokomo has alot of support, but I think it can sometimes be difficult to get replacement parts for them. Losi has almost no aftermarket support, but replacement parts are easy to get here (US). Personally, I like Hot Bodies and Tamiya.

+rep for a old school chassis. As for the body post, you might be able to mod a body post from one of the newer chassis' out. I know the Hot Bodies Cyclone uses that kind of body post on the rear shock tower. You should probably check around on towerhobbies.com for a similar body post. Hope that helps.

EDIT: Best bet is with these, unless you can find some original ones. But these are blue  lol

Never seen a TA-02 before. That is an interesting chassis. The cool thing about alot of R/C chassis is you can see the evolution of these cars. Have you tried this place:

Hopup Parts | For TAMIYA | TA01/2/3/TA03R - Tamiya - rcMart.com (http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/tamiya-ta01ta02ta03-hopup-parts-c-595_744_754.html?pstatus=0&manufacturers_id=14)

I order from them every so often. I ordered every aluminum and carbon fiber part on my Cyclone from there. Pretty good about shipping for being in China. If you only have this one part to order, it shouldn't be too bad, but I always order a bunch of parts from them; I hate waiting and always pay for expediated shipping.

Nice job. That's such a pain to do, I'll just buy wheels with different offsets! I put these +9mm all around on a 350Z body I did for my fiancee. In the future, I'd go with +9 in the back and +6 up front.

Thanks. The Z is my g/f's, she drifts with me all the time. I'm going to do another one for her soon, she really like the Z bodies. The chassis it is on in the picture is a Tamiya TT-01. It's an alright chassis, okay for those who are just getting into it and not sure if they will stick with it (very cheap chassis and very robust). Currently, she is using a Tamiya Evo-III Suriken edition, which is a sick chassis.

BTW, I love Hankook replicas.

ok I found my old HPI RS4 Sport in my closet and I want to re-do it all, where can I get some cool bodies for it? I saw a serious jzx90 body that would be cool, or maybe someone knows a good 180sx body or silvia? Where do they get these serious looking rims and bodies, not the ugly bodies.

Nice to see this thread again! I have a very old nitro ob4 I think I may dig out of the closet. It's nitro so not the best for drift but fun high speed grip action.

Since RC drifting has slowed down a lot, I've started racing, and let me tell you it is a lot of fun.
Built an all new chassis, Tamiya TA05 v.2.
Painted a new Axio Corolla for my grip machine with the Wedsport paint scheme.

Yeah, RCGT. It's a lot of fun. My friend kept insisting I get into racing to help improve my drifting, so I listened and man it's a blast.
