Okay guys heres the problem, I can drive the car just fine, runs smooth, boosts fine, but when i get wherever I am going and take out the key to let it run down the time on the turbo timer it will sometimes start to smoke pretty badly from the exhaust. My thought is oil seals on the turbo are starting to or almost are gone. What are your guy's thoughts on this?

Motor:

S13 blacktop
stock turbo
stock boost
greddy fmic
greddy intake mani
unknown turbo mani (came on motor)
stock maf

Thanks for your help guys.

so you mean on idle it smokes right? Check your compression. What kind of smoke is it? and what does it smell like? Could be just running rich, but we need to know these things before we can answer more questions.

Smoke is white, smells more like something burning, possibly running rich but not sure about that.

Usualy if the car runs fine, but you smoke on Idle, its the Turbo.

White smoke, is ither Coolant, or UNBURNED oil.
Coolant, doesnt smell, so you'r pretty much left with oil.
If it was oil, because of a cylinder problem (rings), it would have to go thru the combustion chaber, to get to the exhaust.
This would mean, it gets burned - and the smoke that comes from this is BLUISH, not white.

Easy check thoug - go under the car, remove the Extention from the DP to the rest of the exhaust, and stick your finger inside the DP - See if its oily.

Offcours, dont do this while engine is runing ;-)

Not trying to be a smart ass by no means, but do you mean to remove the elbow and check for oil there?^^ You can also remove the intake piping that goes to your turbo and see if you have oil there.

What happens if you don't use the turbo timer and just let the car idle with the key in the ignition?

Coolant has a very unique smell when it burns..

OP, you're probably right that the oil seal is done. Does it smoke at idle the same way? It's probably time to plan your turbo, injectors and ECU upgrade. GL.

Yes - Remove the elbow.
Most of the time, when a turbo starts to smoke, is because oil leakes in to the exhaust side - not the intake side.
I have yet to see a turbo leaking on the intake side, to tell the truth.

If it leaks on the intake side of the turbo, you would have oil thruout the intake system, and the oil would end up in the cyliders, burn out, and the smoke you would see would be blueish, and not white.

The reason I was thinking my oil seals were gone is because i get oil in the intake piping and blow off valve. So that pretty much seals the deal.

Oil in your intake, and blow off valve, is more likely to be from BLOWBY thru the CrankCase breather and the valve cover, rather than the turbo.

As i said - I have yet to see a turbo leak on the intake side.

Check comprssion - if you have execive blowby, it could mean a problem with the piston rings.

Meaby its time to install a catch can, BTW.

Really? Not the shit that got in my mouth a few days ago...

Yeah, do the easiest first. check for oil at your turbo, do a compression check. You should be at 150+ on all 4 cylinders, with a difference of less than, eh, 15 or so, between them.

Same thing happened to me years back in college. It got so bad that the car would be engulfed with white smoke at a stop light. Embarrassing to say the least.

OP I think you were on the right track from the get go. GL.

Sweet smell is good - if it doesnt stink - then it doesnt smell, for me.

Yes burnt coolant has a unique smell like everyone else said, but dont go try smelling your exhaust trying to figure out what is burning. Even if it was burning coolant its still pretty hard to smell unless your car was dumping craploads of it out your exhaust.
